Who Are The NE Players?

A

Hello New Englanders,

I am going to make a move to the New England area in about a year. :)

Just curious - who are the radio owners in the New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine area? I see companies like Nassau, Saga, and Clear Channel are players - anyone else?

Does Nassau do all of its programming from a single location?

Of the owners, who have you worked with? What do you think of these companies and the way they do business in the area?

Thanks!

Al

OK, since 50-plus people have look at your post but h ave not responded, I'll bite.

There are both corporate players and locally-owned and operated players. It depends on what you are looking to do up here. If you are looking for work, there isn't much of it. Even fewer buying opportunities. If you are looking for basic knowledge of the market for some other reason, you might want to contact some of the posters privately.

Alison, please tell me you haven't purchased or rented a home yet.
No ... not yet. It may happen sometime next year. I will be looking for work. I understand how tight the market is. It's that way everywhere. Not looking to be a star, just a decent job.

So, what are the Clear Channel and Nassau folks like? With whom have you worked?

Al

1) What is your definition of "decent job?" I don't class many NNE radio jobs as "decent." NNE is an overwhelmingly expensive place to live, so you'll need a second job to keep yourself afloat.

2) There is no Clear Channel. They sold their smaller stations. The former CC sticks in Burlington are now owned by Ken Barlow and Vox.

AIM me if you have any more questions.

So, WGIR in Manchester, and WERZ, WHEB, WQSO, and WSKX in Portsmouth are no longer CC? Wow. They are still running CC websites.

Is it true that Nassau runs a lot of thier programming out of the home office in Hooksett, NH?

As far as decent ... the payroll checks don't bounce. Also, anything in programming ... on or off the air.

Al

I'm not sure what the situation is with those sticks. I don't usually follow those markets. Can't imagine Kiss 95.3 is hiring anybody...even Kiss 108 isn't hiring.

Can't tell you anything about Nassau, but rare is the occasion in which I see a positive word spoken about them on this site.

On-air and programming jobs seem hard to come by. If you can get one, nicely played.

Alison,

Clear Channel still holds "the former Knight quality station" holdings. GIR, HEB and is likely to still hold the other two you mentioned.

As far as Nassau is concerned, many stations are out of Hooksett, but they have the Claremont cluster as well, also in NH. Last I knew anyway. :-[ ;D

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input. All of you have given me information I can use.

Al

Eh, where? The CBS job bank only lists a sales job at WZLX. I don't think that is what Allison had in mind ... Entercco has a bunch of listings but only a few are on-air, it looks like.

@Alison, your best two bets, (Entercom) Entercom.com) and CBS Radio (CBSRADIO.COM) both have some good opennings in Boston

Good luck to you

Though stations in markets the size of Manchester and Portsmouth are being sold off by CC, they're holding onto those markets (save for WGIP 1540 in Portsmouth, which must be divested) for now as they're developing as Boston suburbs. Though, as Will noted, WSKX is a full-time simulcast of WXKS-FM in Boston, so the staffed stations that they're holding are news/talk WGIR/WGIN and rock WGIR-FM in Manchester; and hot AC WERZ, rocker WHEB, adult standards WMYF, and classic hits WQSO in Portsmouth.
