Who are the worst talk radio hosts in Boston?

1)Finneran

He gets to wear the dunce cap...or the wig...this from the station that forced Jeff Katz down our
collective ears for waaay too long

2)Todd Iceberg Fiendburg is far from fine, just awful.

3)Michael Graham Awful awful awful awful awful

3) Michael Graham

See other post. Yikes.
Feinburg is OK at times but can sound like Generic Fill in Host...
btw took daytrip to SE Conn. yesterday and heard a minute or so of DePetro on WPRO. The perfect
host to talk about local Prov. political issues...Cranston Johnny D has gone home, sweet, home, and
even if he says anything controversial it prob won't get noticed like it did here.

The fact that Depetro fits in Rhode Island like Howie fits up here shows how untalented those blokes are.

One has to be able to roll with the punches; be able to switch hats and discuss all sorts of issues.

Howie is one-note-charlie and it has gotten stale. The fact that everything around him is so ugly and awful he gets away with it. If we had real radio competition and a ton of owners and stations Carr would've been long gone. He is a product of the times - sour milk that was left out in the sun too long.

Thank God we have an internet where you can find some great material because radio as we knew it is gone; it's now just one big boring INFOMERCIAL. The shills that mouth off for the Corporate schmucks you wouldn't want to meet on the street let alone go to a party with.

It's the difference between listening to the music of the Beatles or getting bad rappers infiltrating the airwaves.

Tom Finneran is the rap music of talk radio. Howie Carr is not far behind him.

Michael Graham "Crackers" of course
Followed by that gender questionable Jay Severin.

But there are some who still like Howie, such as me...and his ratings are half-decent. Once he loses
audience, he'd be gone or relegated to a morning or weekend time slot like his predecessor. Carr
has about 10 more affiliates (at least) than Severin does :)

Even if you disagree with Howie's politics or some of the topics he covers, at least is an actual talk show.

If you call in, Sandy will put you on the air, and Howie will have a discussion with you.

Most other talk shows have very few callers, and they spend the first have of their call telling the host how much they adore him or her. It is nauseating.

I agree that Depetro sounds better down in RI, but it seems like he takes up too many local issues as his pet causes. I don't really care if the dog catcher in Warwick is taking too many long lunches.

Speaking of finding other radio on the internet -- there's an endless supply. 75% of the day I'm listening to online stations because there are so many sports interrruptions and lousy reception in my area. Has anyone tried www.live365.com ?

And reminding us what station we're listening to every other minute. As if we're going to forget what station our favorite show is on.

If Massachusetts and Boston were doing wonderfully rather than in the toilet and a laughingstock for the rest of the country, Howie Carr would have no show and no audience. I mean, look at the material he has to work with: A governor who is a laughingstock and as inept as the day he was born; the Boston School System who has to go and get an 'expert at fixing broken school systems' to be their next superintendent...and this after their first choice bailed out; a Boston murder rate that is rivaling Detroit's; a Mayor who can't speak; and two disgraced ex-presidential candidates in Dukakis and Kerry; population that is fleeing and will probably (likely) result in a lost electoral vote and/or congressional seats; and a picture of Massachusetts next to the word 'HACK' in the encyclopedia.

Yeah, the best way to fight Howie Carr is not to have a state and a city that everyone laughs at with every justifiable reason. Massachusetts and Boston just writes his material every day!

* For the record RI isn't as ethnic as one might believe: not everyone has a vowel at the end of the surname.

This is a tough question in a sense because I haven't heard RKO in a generation.
on WTKK
+ Barnicle is a pretty tough listen: so I don't.
+ E.Andelman has $$$. The Borst Belt routine is very tired.
+ Sevarino-his rep, preceeded him. Have heard him on Imus(alas) but never cared to hear the talk show: not one time!

+WBZ for a 50K super station has a pretty lightweight crew. What is so hard about finding a conservative (a requirement, have you noticed) who is not crazy and who doesn't do performance art for the GOP? Weekend guy Pat DesMaris brings fresh concern to public breast feeding and the attacks on Christmas; heady stuff.

#1 Get a grip on reality. ::) MA is a great state to live in. I'm not even going to bother countering each specific statement you made which is so obviously not grounded in any sort of reality.

#2 Do you normally walk right into people's homes and insult them???

I maybe Wrong, But I Think most People whom live in N.H., work in MA . Boston Murder rate, is no where close to Detroit murder rate . If you dont go to school , you may end up living in MA ( OK its a Kerry Joke ) .

We have a lot of good things here in MA but we also have the hackerama, one party rule, etc...and
Ted, Lurch (Kerry), Deval, Da Mayah (though he's good for comic relief), etc.

getting back to talk hosts, I was on the mostly-left leaning Blather Watch blog (based in Seattle)
and there were more than a few complimentary comments about Dennis Miller (yes, me again
trying to pitch WTKK, WRKO, or WTTT on his show: "of course, that's just my opinion; I could be
wrong...") or even the other Dennis (Praeger, who IS heard on WTTT):

"Agree on Dennis Miller... He tries to carry on a rational dialogue with left-wing liberals and wacked out conservatives and is typically reasoned and can keep it light. Dennis Prager is probably the most articulate conservative on the air. He is more engaging than Medved and as intellectual and is not carrying water for Bush like Medved does, although he is conservative."

"Have you checked out Dennis Miller yet? He doesn’t speak over or hang up on his callers and is always willing to listen. After listening to an opposing view, he rebuts with class and intelligence. And as usual listening to him is always a vocabulary lesson. Plus he plays great bumper music"

More Mooo'ing from Cowhampshire with the same steaming pile of the end product.

To all the radio wannabes who put down Howie Carr, Michael Graham and Jay Severin, they have the jobs and you don't. If you think you are so much smarter and can do a better job who's stopping you. Go for it

Boston and Massachusetts have one major shared trait: They are full of parochialism and an inflated sense of self-worth. But get outside your little incubator down there, and the laughter aimed at Massachusetts and Boston is deafening. It really is. You're your own parody show, and the reason why hosts like Carr succeed is because they don't follow the script put forth by Menino ("We can do it through teeeeeeeeem werrrk') and Deville ('Together we can...') as a hymnbook for all you mind-numbed robots who drink the Kool-Aid. If Carr's constant rallies against the Liberal establishment weren't based in truth (which is how and why parody found in his sort of humor works in the first place), then he'd be bounced long ago. Carr works because he stands above that Liberal nonsense and speaks out against it. Someone like Finneran fails miserably because he is a product of that environment.

Don't blame me, I voted for Muffy! :)
As for N.H., a scenic and wonderful state (as is VT) though MA residents have been moving in and
shifting it to the Left these days thus leading some to refer to it as "North Massachusetts". Or someday
it could be!

>>Someone like Finneran fails miserably because he is a product of that environment.

Rather than railing against hacks...let's put one on the air!* I'm only surprised that they didn't pair him
with Marjorie Clapprood (remember when she used to do a Sunday night show on Lifetime? For awhile
you had TWO raspy voiced, big-haired Marges on Sunday night TV--the other being Mrs. Homer
Simpson of course...)

*--hack can mean not just a beneficiary of political patronage but a "howaya Chahhlie" part of the
old-boy-network. See former speaker George Keverian (IIRC; denying it): "I am not a hack. You are not a hack.
We ought not be treated...this way."

btw you'll note that the likes of a Ted Kennedy will appear on a show like the Felon's but wouldn't
dare appear on Howie's show. Except in sound clips, of course. Billy Bulger used to do guest shots on
shows like Brudnoy's, but could you imagine the man Judge George Daher called "The Corrupt midget"
appearing on Howie's show in person, rather than just on a soundclip? He'd get torn down!

"I do not know WHERE my brother is."

Not looking to be a talk radio host. I just simply have a problem with a guy who said he was living in Boston but was in fact broadcasting his show from New York. Its a credibillity factor.

Worst:
1. Jay Severin (insulting and spents too much time defending his masculinity)
2. Mike Barnicle (the program is too relaxed with no focus)
3. Lovell Dyatt (great voice but little else to offer)

Best:
1. Jordan Rich (easy to listen too, great delivery)
2. Jim Braude (good left wing talk show host)
3. Tom Finneran (sorry all, I actually think he puts on a pretty thoughtful show)
