WHO BOUGHT AM820 WOSU?

They say the last day on WVKO-AM will be on December 31, 2011....

So, there will be a twelve days of simulcasting on both 820AM and 1580AM if all goes as planed.

St Gabriel will stop broadcasting on 1580 WVKO at 6pm on Dec 20th... At point there will be a loop on WVKO-A informing listeners to tune to AM 820 for St. Gabriel...

Oh, geez.

Now, people with legit complaints are in Mansfield, where WOSV flipped to a "Classical 101" simulcast and never looked back. 820 is not the strongest, most interference free signal up there, but is easier than 89.7 (due to co-channel WKSU/Kent).

They COULD watch the video simulcast of WOSU-FM's "All Sides with Ann Fisher" on "The Ohio Channel" (WOSU 34.2).

True, and if the FCC database is correct, WOSU-TV's Mansfield translator on 43 has gone digital (assuming it carries the same subchannels as 34 in Columbus).

That doesn't help in the car, or help Mansfield listeners get the NPR programming that used to be on WOSV, of course. :D And don't get me started on HD Radio on WOSV. ;)

From this on St Gabriel's facebook page, it looks like St Gabriel may start broadcasting on 820 AM sooner than the 20th...

"We will be announcing the new station to the parishes on December 17th – at which time parishioners can tune-in to AM 820 for the first time (even though the official launch doesn’t occur until December 20th). "

St. Gabriel Radio said they will be on 820AM as soon as December 17, 2011 if they don't have any technical problems.

Dr. Gee was on All Sides with Ann Fisher yesterday. One of the callers asked about WOSU-AM sighing off the air for good next Friday. Then
Dr. Gee commented on an email that claimed OSU students don't have their own collegiate radio station on campus.

They talk about WOSU-AM and FM radio and about a possible student collegiate radio station on campus at 30:00 minutes into the show here:

Mike in Shortnorth (a caller) complained about the switch to "FM" .. said he would have trouble picking up the signal downtown ... (seriously 89.7's signal is located near downtown) He went on about HD Radio .. etc...

I know in the old days, some of the FM stations with towers on the south side had trouble going north because of low tower height in combination with the signal being blocked by Downtown skyscrapers. Once the WBNS tower was built, most of the stations moved there so they could broadcast from a higher HAAT.

So that makes me wonder about people complaining about WOSU-FM's signal and whether this could be due to WOSU being on the WSYX tower versus most of the other major FM stations being located on the WBNS tower. Downtown structures and skyskrapers blocking the signal from the south and then the RF jumble in that area may be what's causing that problem. In the old days, wherever a "Channel 6" was assigned to a city, it was desirable for public stations to co-locate on the same tower to avoid interference. With the Channel 6 frequency gone, WOSU no longer has any reason to be on the WSYX tower and it might be advisable to move to Twin Rivers.

WOSU FM is on a university owned tower on Dodridge Street next to Union (not Greenlawn) cemetary. It's the old Channel 6 site used before Stimmel Road and after Obetz Road.

Correct, though WOSU moved to the Stimmel Rd tower in 1996 and I think in sometime around 2009 moved to the old Ch 6 site
(after WSYX shut off analog 6)

Not sure of the exact date of the WOSU-FM move back to Dodridge, but yes, it was post the shutting down of the analog WSYX signal. 2009 might be a good date.

There is no problems with WOSU FMs signal near downtown... It's 40kw.. The people complaining .. well in my honest opinion were just complaining because WOSU was selling the license.. I have never had an issue near / in downtown picking up their signal.. It doesn't suffer the WBNS Tower effect like the Class A Signals do that rim shot Columbus.

I can see someone not getting good reception depending on their location and the quality of their radio. I agree it's unlikely, but it can happen. I was in Cincinnati the other day and thought the Cincinnati 93.3 sounded kind of dirty in Fairfield. I'm sure being so close together, the Columbus 93.3 steps over the Cincinnati 93.3 from time to time.

Personally, I would have preferred NPR staying on 820. Not only do I hate the idea of wasting a Class B signal on anything but music, but I'm one of those old-fashioned people who doesn't think talk sounds right unless it's on AM.

I am not a "fan" of FM talk either... I honestly liked 89.7 better when it was classical (It was one of my presets prior to its flip to talk -- which is why I know about its downtown signal quality) but we all know tOSU has penned for an another FM for many years (they tried to purchase WCBE at one point but CBE refused to sell) .. so when 101.1 became avail and they bought it .. we all knew the days of 820 were numbered.

If I remember correctly, THE Ohio State University paid Roger Vaughan $4 million +/- to get their hands on 101.1. They just got $2 million for 820 AM so their net cost was $2 million. This may sound crazy, but I wonder if they could trade for 91.5. WOSU would have a signal more appropriate for classical, and the 91.5 folks could have a commercial signal again. Classical Music on 101.1 just doesn't seem right to me - it should be on the low end of the dial.
