Who cares?

This has nothing to do with Stephanie Miller or KQKE, but it's only the latest example of something I see frequently. This snippet from the KQKE press release on their new lineup:

"[Miller's] fresh and funny show is on dozens of radio stations across the country, including in Los Angeles where she is now the #2 rated talk program in her time period. The Stephanie Miller Show is on the air in Miami, Seattle, Boston, and Washington, D.C. plus many other cities nationwide."

Why do stations do this? Why does someone in the Bay Area giving a flying **** about what's on the radio in Miami or Boston? Why do stations promote Hannity's "rise to 400 affiliates in two years"? Isn't this a small part of what's wrong with the medium?

People in radio care are impressed with that sort of thing - especially the people at the station or show who hired the people who wrote the press release.

And sometimes those same radio people argue that signing up a bunch of stations, including stations in major markets, says something about the appeal, drawing power or quality of the show.

But regular people listening to the radio are probably unconcerned. They only care if they like a show and if it holds their attention.

Because it makes people assume that if the show is a big deal across the country, that everyone is listening to it, then you should too so you aren't left behind and outside of the cultural zeitgeist.

It's marketing.

Welcome to the wonderful world of syndication.

Yeah, the text is on their website now, too. Geez.

Someone must have been in a hurry and did a cut-and-paste job.

I caught that too the other day.

Surprising, since KQKE is usually on the ball. They've really been doing a lot with the station and the site, including local shows (Will and Willie, Harrison) and specialty programming ("Queer Channel", which has its own website).
