Who do you miss on the radio?

I loved Matt Drudge Sunday nights on KFI. Still haven't found anything worth listening to on Sunday nights since he signed off. Anybody else?

Among the living there are Larry Elder, Joe Crummy, and I agree about Matt Drudge whose radio show was not very good but by far the best in the Breaking News dept. I tuned in for the lastest and thought I was out of the loop when I missed it. Ray (Cranky) Briem used to be big on my schedule back when.
Then there are the dead. Arthur Godfrey, Bill Balance, Paul Harvey, Walter Winchell, and from KPFK, Mike Hodel.
No doubt I'm forgetting a few--but someone else will help me remember.

I get the feeling everyone on this board knows what I'm going to say... ;D

Michael,

I can't help you with most of those great DJs, many of whom are gone, of course - but you just need to travel more to hear Russ O'Hara or Bobby Ocean. Russ in Palm Springs on KDES (98.5 now apparently). I was down there last summer - it's a very well programmed station - good Classic Hit music mix, and good DJs. I'd never heard Bob O'Brien before. Clever guy.

Bobby Ocean has been filling in more than usual lately on KOIT. Larry Ickes has been on vacation. They're still allowing Bobby to push the format envelope a bit. He dutifully reads all the liners, but definitely has time to impart that somewhat surreal sense of humor we all enjoy.

Yes, KDES is now on 98.5 and we will start streaming in a month or so. Russ O'Hara is on 2-6pm monday thru friday.

In my opinion, your station sounds great, Jon. Actually, I liked the music mix better than neighboring KRTH - KDES has integrated a lot more 80s music, and it really works.

By the way - shouldn't you change your occupation to "Classic Hits DJ?"

Miss many of the ones mentioned - Bill Ballance, Gary Owens, Matt Drudge, and Paul Harvey - but particularly Paul Harvey. Always enjoyed his stuff, especially "The Rest of the Story." Thought his son did a great job on that when he filled in, and was surprised/disappointed when he didn't carry on 'the family business.'

Oh yeah, I forgot Kennedy and Suits.
How soon we forget. :-*
I loved them. I miss them...but now I get more done in the evening.

I'll go along with that one, Jim Healy. I followed him since he was on TV on channel 7 news in the late-60s with Baxter Ward and Rona Barrett, and Healy was the sports anchor. And then, I followed him since 1970 or so on KLAC and later KMPC. He was one of a kind. Also, I miss Lohman and Barkely. I probably listened to them about 80-90 percent of my mornings between 1969 and about 1980 or so,until about 1985.
About the only time I didn't hear their KFI morning show in high school was when I got hooked on Hudson and Landry for a year or so on KGBS.
I also miss afternoons with Gary Owens on KMPC, and the many times I'd tune into him after school and just before Angels games, etc.
I was lucky enough to see Lohman and Barkley in person, doing their comedy act on stage one Saturday night in Fullerton. very funny guys. And I got to see their morning show in person once, when they were broadcasting from Knott's Berry Farm for the 50th anniversary of Mrs. Knott's chicken restaurant.

jh

Peter Bergman and the gang with Radio Free Oz on KPFK in the 1960s.

Well worth staying up for after midnight.
