Who does the best local commercial production?

I've been hearing some really compelling locally produced commercials on the air in the Triad. Who do you think does a great job producing local radio ads?

My vote is tied between DJ Turner at WTHZ and Jim Scott at Entercom.

red hot jim scott. former kzler jon matthewz (carter) was real good when he was in the market. also, pete bunch used to be a monster, as well. dick edwards at sjs is good.

I say Larry Whicker auto sales has some good local productions, esp the one with Uncle Sam! It looked just like him!!!! I also like the one for the hearing aid center with the lady Drs. there's two very big reasons I likes that one! Wink wink nuge nuge, say na more, govnah!!! ;D :D

JT Austin at Curtis has been doing great production for years, and Bill Price at Country Legends is very good. Both of them can also be heard on the local TV affiliates. Bill is on WFMY and I know I've heard JT and Jim Scott on TV, as well. DJ's commercials are good, too. There are probably some young producers that I don't know that are doing great work. Jim Scott does good production, but his voice is not so good.

I think the Army Navy Store commercials with the guy singing in the shower are over the top memorable.
Also the Cox Toyota commercials where they talked about Alamance County was such a different approach.
The David Letterman top 10 spoof for the new suzuki store in greensboro really stood out.

Hogwood's TV and Radio spots both Suck for Carolina Kia as does whoever the idiot is that does all the Bob King stuff! Best that I remember was Bob Dale Lackey

Carolina Kia may suck, but memorable! Army-Navy store commercials with guy singing in shower are excellent. Memorable, recognizable, effective, funny. 109 U-Pull-It commercials, although obnoxious with guy singing their phone number, very effective. That's the name of the game people! Like it or not.

Am I the only one who thinks the Cox Toyota jingle sucks? Especially when they use it in a hard sell spot. Also they usually put their disclaimer at the beginning of the spot, I find that really ethical. Of course they're not the only car dealer that resorts to spending 25 seconds promoting a low price and then telling you (as fast as they can) either at the beginning or ending of the spot that every thing they just said is a lie. But hey, they're all car dealers, what more can we expect?

Speaking of memorable spots, anyone in the Triad still remember the old Billy Shepard Carpet Center spots? The ones where he sang "my name is Billllly Shepard and I own a carpet store" to the tune of the Wabash Cannonball. He was open 8:55 to 8:55 and his phone # was 855-RUGS. They were really terrible, horrible, nasty spots, but I bet anyone who listened to the stations he advertised on still cringe whenever his name is mentioned. But they were memorable.

Must not have been too effective since the store no longer exists.

Billy Sheppard - I can still sing it (as poorly) - years after it's all gone. That's a CATCHY commercial, plus the 8:55 to 8:55 stuck.

I think of the commercial every time I pass by one of his old stores on Battleground. That's hard to top.

I'd rather hear Mike Hogwood, Billy Mays and nails on a chalkboard in an endless loop than hear the Bob King Kia announcer for 60 seconds! Nothing makes me change the dial faster (unless "Brown Eyed Girl" or "Ramblin' Man" get played for the umpteenth time)!

Mike Urben of CC Raleigh. No question about it, THE Best!

Agreed. I had the pleasure of working with Mike for 5 years at CC Raleigh. He's an incredible VO talent and producer. Of course he spent about 18 years with Capitol before he joined AMFM (CC) about 1998-99.

Mike is the local VO for Bojangles radio/TV and the voice of UNC-TV statewide. I think he's also still the voice of a few Salem NT stations, including Atlanta.

To top it off he's quite humble...and has soap opera looks. He could be on TV. My wife calls him "Soap Opera Mike".

;D Gee, For a minute I thought you were talking about Mike Hogewood and I thought GAWD! This guy's "Nut's" Glad to see it "ain't true"

;D Used to be a guy in Orlando Florida, Art Grindle, who would break windshields, hit cars with sledge hammers etc..and Holler..I WANT TO SELL YOU A CAR!.. I think his son is doing it now..used to be WFTV Channel 9..Anybody remember him? They were God awful spots but he sold the hell out of cars!

I read a murder mystery recently about a car dealer just like that and they found him dead. It was a true story. I wonder if it was Art?
