Who goes Christmas first?

3WS and 92.9 BOTH went Xmas right after their morning shows today. They did the same last year on LightUp Night.

According to Yes.com's playlists, WLTJ-92.9 went all-Christmas yesterday (November 17th) at about 5 P.M. EST. WWSW followed this morning.

OOPS! My bad....not that I listen to either one on a regular basis....FYI Cathy Caldwell, late of Channel 4 mornings, was subbing for Vicki Cohill on 'LTJ this AM. Good to hear her again.

There is NO reason for both a/c's in this market to go all X-mas. Sorry, to get my a/c fix I'm going to have to listen to Star 100.7 and hear My Sharona for the 1,000,000th time on yet another flashback such and such

Can you say "Sirius" or "XM"?

Or maybe iPod?

I haven't turned a radio on in several days. I'm listening to nothing but my own CD's and tapes.

RR:

The radio world thanks you! Just kidding. What are you listening
to on your CD's and tapes?

I'm listening to music that I like. And I don't listen to music that I don't like. Though I must confess that I did exaggerate a little. I did catch a few moments of broadcast radio when I popped out one CD to replace it with another.

Oldies

I know it's a little harder to hear us at night during the winter months, but 620 KHB is playing oldies from the 60's and 70's seven nights a week, starting at 7:15 PM. Enjoy.

I have heard that station's oldies programming before. It struck me as an excellent re-creation of AM Top 40 radio from yesteryear. Though such programming doesn't appeal to me as a listener, that doesn't stop me from recognizing the quality of the program. I have nothing but respect for the people who are responsible for such an outstanding program.

It also strikes me as an excellent place to run advertising to reach a particular niche market. It might not draw huge mass numbers, but I'll bet the people who tune in for the music stay tuned in during commercial breaks.

Now, if someone on some other station would just do the same sort of recreation of an AOR station of the early 1970's...

That's exactly what it's meant to be.

Thanks for the kind words!

I hear ya trefdawg. By the time Christmas comes around, I wont ever want to hear another christmas song again. I think the stations should just do this the week of Christmas and no longer. I wonder if all the stations will return to their regular formats once Christmas is over?

Re: Bah Humbug!

I'm in deep depression after watching today's Steeler disaster so I may not be thinking clearly, that being said:

I wouldnt look for any format flips on 3WS or WSHH, but who knows what else Steel City Media may have up it's sleeve.

96.9 Santa-FM... all the Christmas hits from Bing to bling.

Is anyone on this board aware of the fact that Christmas music=good ratings? Most stations that go Xmas end up having their best book of the year, the earlier they do it the bigger spike they get.

I have noticed a pattern on R-I boards through the years. Many people get angry and upset when stations go Christmas before Thanksgiving or if multiple stations in their market go Christmas. When the Fall book is released and these staions go up (and they almost always do, sometimes up BIG), nobody gives them credit. If they do mention it all, they will say "W***" went up" and NOT mention holiday music at all. I think this is because by the time the fall book is released nobody is thinking of Christmas anymore. I used to think people would remember, but they never do and the cycle continues yet again.

Is anyone aware that an increasing number of advertisers are learning that big raw numbers don't always translate into advertising effectiveness? Is anyone aware that more and more advertisers are using market testing of how well ads break through radio station clutter to influence buyers, using testing methods that are very similar to the testing methods used to pick song playlists? And that such research is demonstrating that big numbers alone aren't the advertising nirvana that we all used to think it was?
