WHO heard in Dallas!

Y'all have a very stong signal out of Des Moines! We can pick up WHO very easily here in Dallas. We actually have a 50,000 Watt NewsTalk on 1080 (KRLD), but it is not to much of interference with 1040. After about 10pm, when our local little 1040 goes off, WHO is on the air in Big D!

Thanks for the great programming.

Regards from Texas,
CTL

Because WHO is a 50,000 watter as well.

You call canned, satellite fed programming that is heard in every other market, great? I guess to each their own.

I would call "Chris The Listener" from Dallas a Clear Channel plant from Des Moines trying to defend a dinosaur.

Want to know where the WHO listeners are every day? In the Des Moines Register obit pages.

Give me a break...the usual on-line know-it-alls. If the below were true, they wouldn't bill like they do, and they wouldn't make the Des Moines radio race a race for second place.

I'm guessing the poster quoted below is one of those who wants more 'local' content on WHO, but if it were added they'd be on here complaining about how that 'local' content isn't as good as the national stuff they used to have.

Forget WHO is live and local until 1pm, and then run the most popular radio show on the planet, followed by a live and local afternoon show. They produce several local, Iowacentric shows on the weekends as well.

Don't let any facts get in the way of a popular, emotional argument though.

i.e.--> out-of-work radio people who couldn't hack it...or left-wing loons who actually think stealing money from the Boys and Girls Club to finance liberal radio is a good idea.

Facts? We don't need no stinkin' facts!

Outlook

Well, I'm pretty Republican/Conservative and I'll give my outlook.

There's gonna be a whole new generation starting to run things in the next few years, and sooner or later, WHO is gonna have to change the Van&Bonnie, Sue&Jerry..."Aw shucks, golly gee" type style.

Having Rush, Laura, Reagan and the like on WHO is great. Michealson can get fairly stimulating when he's not talking about school board elections.

But the whole.....talk about nothing, workin in the garden type culture isn't going to be here in the future. That's something that primarily appeals to the 50-plus generation, and sooner or later....ya know.

Look for a major change in the business community in the coming years as well. Of course then, all the 55-plus folks will be complaining this city/state is going down the drain...bla, bla, bla...the end is near, etc.

True on most every count. The fact remains they still provide what a lot of stations don't - local programming that is enjoyed and desired. I'm not a fan of everything they carry, but overall it is good radio. As far as the post "their listeners are in the obits" Duh...all of us can say that

C'mon Guys!

I can't believe this. Yall think I'm fake?

Ya, I gave a shout out to KOA Denver. And to KDKA Pittsburgh. (those guys from pitsburgh have a great sense of humor!!). And I went through my list of radio stations I have picked up lately, and on the list (some you might know) are:
WLW Cincy
WOAI San Anotone (pretty close though)
KTRH Houston (again, close)
KMOX St. Louis (they're dropping the Cardinals!! NOOO!!!)
KFAB Omaha
WGN, WLS, WBBM Chicago (Go Cubs)
KLS Salt Lake
WSNB Atlanta
And some others. I might post on some of those boards to let those cities know.

I have no idea who owns what, but I just listen.

Anyway, I'll come back and visit some day!

Regards from TEXAS!

Nice attempt. "Yall"? That did it.

Look at the top of your pay stub. The station that owns you is called "Clear Channel".

Hello and Welcome

Hey chris-
Thanks for stopping by the IA board and letting us know what you think of WHO. Good to see the station is well recieved out there in the great beyond!!

I apologize on behalf of some others on here who seem to think that locally owned independent is the only way to go. Which, in reality means that they'd rather have a locally/independent owned garbage-pile with poor audio, no signal and cheesy production, rather than something that people will actually be able to bear listening to.

These same people will actually tell you that GOOD local programming (that isn't sports) can still be put togeather in places where the talent pool itself is obviously very limited, not to mention the sales dollars. You see, the reason for this is that good local programs can still be found in a handful of Americas major cities, where there is a greater talent pool to pick from, and salaries are much better. What they forget, is that they are living in Iowa, and it's a much different story out here, when the largest cities, like Des Moines and Omaha, are small towns, compared to places where decent local programming can actually be found and funded.

So, until then, we're stuck with 1 or 2 local shows followed by some great premiere/ABC/...whatever network programming. (And, some not so good.)

Anyway,
Thanks Chris,
and remember, we really are pretty nice people here. Come visit sometime!!!

CHECK THE CHICAGO BOARD!!!

Look at Chicago, people!
I have picked up 3 different COMPETING stations in Chicago! I have no idea who owns who!!

(oh, and you might like the response I got in Nashville. I have picked up one of their stations, and it turns out it is CC too. The moderater responded with "Do you realize you just thanked CC for 'great programing'?" HaHa. I told him about yall.)

Re: CHECK THE CHICAGO BOARD!!!

Welcome Chris,

Sometimes, people forget that there are radio hobbyists that post here and forget to step outside of the radio bubble. Hearing a signal from a far away place is how many fell in love with radio.

Where is the Iowa hospitality that we are known for?

good point Outsider, that is indeed how I pursued a degree in broadcasting.

Re: CHECK THE CHICAGO BOARD!!!

Don't mind this board Chris, there are a few, very loud could beens and several never were's who blame consolidation, automation, blue skies or guys in suits for their failed dreams rather then themselves.

I love listening to distant signals late at night in the car, and it's very exciting when you are contacted by someone far away that they heard you in a far off place!

And I love assumptive individuals who know nothing about one's plight. I happen to be a happy gainfully employed broadcaster with no regrets. I've been in this sometimes cooky business for over 25 years.

I think very logically. So when someone gets on broadcasting message boards across the country saying how wonderful it is he found all these clear channel "Clear Channel" stations in Dallas, I'm a little skeptical.

So go ahead and "welcome" this plant. He's getting a great laugh at your expense.

Re: CHECK THE CHICAGO BOARD!!!

So what!!!

If he is a plant, let him be, screw him!

I don't see the harm in saying hello to someone who claims to have gotten WHO in Texas. I don't understand this dark conspiracy attitude, and why this thread even turned into what it did. All from a DX'er!!!

Sheeesh!!!

Re: CHECK THE CHICAGO BOARD!!!

You're right, Clear Channel has nothing better to do then plant someone on a message board with very light traffic, hoping to change the opinion of less then a dozen people about their corporate radio stations.

Give me a break. Maybe this guy was actually excited to get a relatively famous radio station from far away. Maybe you assume everyone cares about the same agenda you do.

Maybe he is a 'plant' and getting a laugh 'at my expense.' If he has enough time on his hands to try that then that's his problem not mine. If you are concerned enough about a person you will never know 'getting a laugh' at your expense, let me know, I can scare up about 50 things you could take care of for me that would be a better allocation of time for everybody.

Either way, finding distant signals like that is a fun and exciting part of the business. Enjoy it for what it is.

I've gotta go, I think I see a black helicopter hovering above.

I think "Chris the Listener" is just what he says he is, a listener who tried to be friendly. I noticed a post from him on the Dallas board, which seemed sincere, asking if John Tesh is syndicated. So I don't think he's a plant from CC or anyone else.
