Who Is Live & Local?

Which Nashville radio stations are live and local for every shift from 6am to 6pm Mon-Fri?

"Lightning 100" WRLT-FM

99.7 WTN used the slogan for several years "Live and Localfrom 5:30 AM to 8 PM, but that was really misleading when you considered that both Dave Ramsey and Phil Valentine, while they may have been done live and originating from Nashville, both are syndicated shows and a lot of time, especially Dave Ramsey, never come across as being from Nashville and hardly even mention the station by name, except in the show bumpers. Iirc, WTN even went as far as proclaiming to be "Live and Local" even after they started airing Fred Thompson, even though it is a syndicated show out of Washington, DC. It's been a while since I have listened to WTN. Do they still use the "Live and Local" slogan on air?

Yes, this is a Convenient UnTruth, as both Ramsey and Valentine are doing national shows originating locally, with little (Valentine) to no (Ramsey) mention about local subject matter. It's funny to me to hear locals calling in to address local subjects or drop local information, public figures, or landmarks on the hosts during a conversation, and then to listen to the hosts' vocal squirming to try to get the callers past their comment or to try to explain the local information to the national audience. It's amazing how the station's live and local claims fool a certain portion of the audience, just in the same way music stations have tried to fool audiences for years as to where the jocks originate (even back to the days of canned shows!).

What makes the claim even more bogus is that Valentine is actually doing the show live from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. CT and there is a network re-feed immediately following the end of the live show (as the Westwood One site will confirm). This would mean Valentine's show, as normally broadcast "live and locally" is only really live for the first two hours. To be fair, there have been a couple of times Valentine has added some local time in after 6:00, but those have been rare occurrences.

While definitely "live and local", Michael DelGiorno seems to rarely take on local issues, leaving Ralph Bristol as the only station host to venture much into local issues. The state of local issues-oriented talk is today a far cry from the days when local radio shows served as a gathering place from which angry citizens opposed to new taxes launched a horn-honkin' effort that successfully put a stop to state legislator's desire to implement such. Today the majority of real local talk is on the sports stations.

WSM not 24/7 live, I was in town over the weekend and we stayed at the Gaylord Hotel and both mornings we were there i arose quite early and walked around passing by the WSM studio and not seeing anyone there. Sunday morning someone was there around 9am, there was a religious program on at the time.

I listen to WSM a lot and can safely say that they are live and local 5:30-midnight weekdays and at least weekend afternoons. Weekend mornings before 10 am are paid programs now.

What a shame from what it once was

102.9 the Buzz is actually live and local 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

I rarely ever listen to WSM anymore, however lately on more that a couple times I tuned in during rush hour and heard someone else doing traffic. Is Richard Thomas still with WSM, and if not, how long has he been gone?

Knowing that the Buzz is live and local 24/y now makes my day complete!

Wow...such sarcasm...usually from people who are unemployed and bitter. Just because something isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean that there aren't a group of talented people who work their behinds off...just like you may now or have in the past. We all try and survive in the same world...why the need to tear people down? What a lack of class.

Richard retired in January after 35 years. Bill Cody had him as an instudio guest most of the morning a few weeks ago. There is a podcast of that show on the WSM website.

Many of my great memories at the big 650 involved Richard...like flying low in a helicopter... skimming just over the Cumberland River...under the Briley Parkway Bridge...then straight up. Nearly lost my lunch. Once when the snow was too bad for me to get out of Gallatin, Richard came and picked me up in his 4-wheel drive and we made it down Gallatin Road in no time. Not sure which ride was more scary.

Gaylord liked to book more than one person to a room for snow nights...so they put Richard in with me. My snoring kept him awake and he got up in the middle of the night and got another room. Then there are a few times we shared that won't be found in print...but all my memories of old Richard are fond ones. Hope he enjoys his time as much as I'm enjoying mine.

“Live and local” and attended operation may be getting confused here. It seems all Cromwell clusters are indeed attended 24/7. Attended meaning there is someone present at the studios and can intervene should it become necessary. Unattended meaning the doors are locked and the security system is turned on, nobody home…

BUDDY help me out here. You said helicopter. For years Richard Thomas was a metro policeman who flew the city of Nashville's police helicopter. But as a p/t employee of WSM he was flying a plane he either owned or leased. Since traffic choppers for tv are "cool" the implication was he was in one..what did they call it..."the spirit of 65" or something. The mic was so filtered he often didn't even sound like he was in an aircraft, and before that it sounded more like a loud lawn mower than a helipcopter.

Do you recall what he was flying for traffic after he left Metro police. Did Gaylord make a deal for a helicopter because when it was NLT his pay arrangement included him providing the plane.

(does metro police even have a helicopter now or do they borrow channel 5's)

I do understand the difference between attended and unattended. The Buzz...has a jock, on air, 24/7. no tracks...period. Although there is one 2 hour industry prgram that airs on Sunday nights for 2 hours...and, of course, the morning show is syndicated, which, understandably takes away from the local aspect. I think they have Dagwood as the local end of that show for the live and local part of it.
