Who is that man and what has he done with Al Roker? And more of the Rose Parade

And who was his sidekick....the only female willing to get out of bed early on New Year's Day?

I didn't watch the parade but a commercial promo I saw a few days ago said Alison Sweeney would be co-hosting with Al. Alison is a long-time actress on Days of our Lives and also hosts The Biggest Loser when it's on.

No wonder I didn't know who she is. ;D

What is it about parades that turn otherwise professional-sounding broadcasters into cloying "aw shucks, it's just me and maw watchin' the floats go by" idiots?

My late mother used to religiously watch the Rose Parade even in the days when it was broadcast in thrilling black and white. She never missed a year. And in those years I overheard plenty of broadcasts even though I wasn't actually watching the action. It is interesting that this year's parade seemed to be tightly scripted so Al and sidekick were reading instead of commenting. Their talk was stilted and sounded as if they were reading off a cue card. Where is the talent in that? Why not have Jay Leno read instead - at least he can get the inflections correct (most of the time).

We watched some with the kids, but on KTLA since we have superstations on Dish. Bob Eubanks hosted along with another woman who I didn't recognize.

That would be Stephanie Edwards, she was kind of a big deal here on the West coast. Her and legendary broadcaster Ralph Story worked together on AM Los Angeles on KABC-7 whichwould become the template and precursor for the premiere of Good Morning, America to compete against The Today Show. She was also the longtime commercial spokesperson for Lucky's Supermarket (now absorbed by Albertson's).

I enjoyed CBS's coverage back in the day with "Young and the Restless" stars Doug Davidson and Victoria Rowell.

The problem with the "Tournament of Roses Parade" is that there isn't much variety from year to year. I stopped watching when CBS stopped its telecasts.

A parade is a parade, that part is true. But it doesn't take a broadcasting genius to place mics near the cameras so the sound matches the video. Nor does it take a genius to tap a commentator who is capable of ad-libing and can develop a description from notes as opposed to reading a 3rd grade script. Nor does it take a genius to remain on subject for more than 10 seconds after these kids have worked all year to earn their way to the parade.

Horrible job NBC. Absolutely disgraceful!

Hannah Storm did do the parade on ABC with GMA's Josh Elliot. Considering the burns she received, she looked damn good. Only thing truly noticable was a bandaged left hand.

First, there's the curiosity factor tuning into ABC on New Year's Eve to check out Dick Clark on the first year back since his stroke, and now this... Wonder if ABC's ratings were higher than other networks' coverage of the parade.

Wasn't she an early co-anchor on ABC's AM America (aka GMA)?

Yes, along with Bill Beutel, whoever he was. And I still remember the two annoying Australian (I think) guys who hosted the first episode of 20/20. ABC replaced them with Hugh Downs the following week.

The names of the first two hosts of "20/20" were Harold Hayes and Robert Hughes. Only Robert Hughes was a native of Australia while Harold Hayes was a native of North Carolina.

I have always assumed that it was because they expected a large number of children to be watching.

I liked the Thanksgiving parades when I was a kid and my daughter will watch them as long as there is some character from a kid's show on. But neither of us have had any interest in the Rose parade for New Year's, and I've never seen any sense in why so many networks carry it.

We watched (and taped) the Rose Bowl parade the year that the high school band from my alma mater (Union City) was on it. I remember that both the NBC and CBS footage provided closeups of the same majorette. Let's just say that the cameramen had especially good taste that year. :-*

But like you, any other year, I probably skipped it entirely.
