Who is your most memorable SA former DJ?

D

Just what the title says. This ought to be interesting.

Anyone stand out in your mind? I think a lot of people are going to say Drex. I know he's my choice.

If you picked Drex as a memorable DJ your memory may not go back too far.
How about KBUC's Travis & Judd, KMAC's Red River Dave and KCOR's Memo Lozano.

Well Drex did have a big impact on this city. KBUC was never really my kinda thing. Although my father STILL talks about that station to this day. He used to love it. He would most likely agree with you.

The Legendary "Godfather" Joe Anthony. Single-handedly responsible for turning San Antonio into the Heavy Metal Capital of the World in the '80s...a title which we no longer hold, unfortunately.

Charlie Brown, Don Couser, Tom East, Ron Houston, Bruce Hathaway, Nick St John, T-bone, Woodie Roberts, Sonny Melendrez... all make the cut, but the best, the man who did the most with the least and enjoyed success radio guys nowadays can only dream of: Bill Shomette.

Actually it go back further than you might think. Drex/Mandrex did nights in the late 80's at KTFM.

IMO, Drex was the best entertaining jock SA had.

Logan Stewart ("With News & comments on that News")
technically not a jock, but for sure a radio legend!

Ha...The real question should be...is radio dead? Will there ever be any more memorable San Antonio radio anything ever again?

The companies all hate jocks...at the most recent NAB the Programming head of Clear Channel said..."There are way too many untalented people on the air now"..."Why would I bother hiring someone and train them to be a talent"...
"We need established personalities who can draw an audience"...

This was coupled with comments regarding how the PPM is showing him that a lot of things past radio consultants drilled into corporate are completely off base and listeners have no interest. Example given was a live interview with MADONNA by Elvis Duran that the PPM showed people turning off in droves...

Madonna has been replaced by GaGa for sure, but I think more importantly this proves all of this research, and numbers manipulation of the past were mostly crap.

People are entertaining themselves death.

People can not be cataloged, boxed and owned. What a shame.

Ricco.
He was on KSAQ and KSJL from late 80s? til the 21st Century. Even though doing promos for Clear Channel he was a staple in SA Radio.

Trey Ware

He was on KTSA-55, KSRR AM Drive with Cindy Cassiano, and now on KSMG.

Mike Roberts KSMG

Davy Rios KONO

Hot Herinetta on KTFM 102.7 then KCJZ 106.7 Jamz, and KTFM 94.1

Cindy Cruz "Cruz News Q96", 99.5 KISS, and KTFM

Drex

I would have to say Drex, with Hot Henrietta coming in as a close second.

Honestly..myself. Working 7P to 12mid on WOAI was a dream come true. I'd listened to WLS in Chicago for years during my days in Corpus Christi. Now, the LS Midnight to 5AM jock was listening to me, as well as the rest of the US, Canada and Mexico. I'd listen to the LS guy on my way home. April 4th, 1974. WOAI was a rocker owned by AVCO before they came out with a home video recorder that wasn't viably priced for the market. Sold their b'cast holdings, which were substantial, for pennies on the dollar. Leave it to Red to make the deal of the century!

WOAI was (is) a clear channel station. Every station in the country with a 1200 AM allocation had to cut it's power at local sunset to accommodate our signal. Hence the name:Clear Channel Communications. Needless to say, I had a ball while it lasted. Not so structured and formatted back in the day.

Seriously, Lee Baby Simms and Woody Roberts (KONO, KTSA) are at the top of my all time San Antonio jocks. I settled into Production at WOAI until '96 when it was no longer fun to go to work. I've been traveling with Joanie, my (much) better half of 40 years, produced a couple of CD's and we visit our kids in New York City, Bahrain and Zurich. This is a wonderful site...congrats to the owners.

I would be remiss if I didn't include John Lisle and Steve Hahn. Sure, they are still DJs in San Antonio, but if they weren't, I would put them at the top of this list. I have been listening to them off and on since 1998, they are pure San Antonio and you have to respect the fact that they have been able to produce a successful show for this long.

two that pop into my head and they always had a rivalry going...CAtfish and Joe Nasty...

but I also recall Angela Wright...Lots of fun...

Another person I remember from the KAPE 1480 AM days...Hal Dingo King. RIP

With tales of radio friends with names like StarBooty. LOL
