Craig never programmed KIIS or any Los Angeles radio station. He worked there one night a week on the weekend. While I played at Infinity many seemed to be under the same impression. I kept my mouth shut so as not to embarrass him. Don't know who padded the resume (whoops - blew it)He did not have the goods to make it in L.A. so he ended up in Orange County radio (small market) where he was a jock and P.D.
The P.D. who hired Craig for that one shift was Mike Wagner who along with Paul Freeman were running a broadcast school on the side. To give the school some validity Mike put Craig on that one shift. It didn't last long.

> One that I know of....Craig Powers. Wait, he's not on the air now. He's only a former Air-Talent/Program Director of the biggest CHR station in radio history...but under the terms necessary to post here that I keep hearing about, as of now, he's another one of those "has beens" who's disqualified from speaking out too, right?

Upon Further Review....

"J.D., Craig never programmed KIIS..."

You're right Mike....But he did work at KIIS-FM, the biggest CHR on the planet 3 times, and did successfully program 3 LA area stations including KEZY....And city grade LA signals are LA stations in my view.

(But my point wasn't about Craig resume, it was about who could/should post on this board.)

Craig Powers, along with Cat Thomas, Tom Chase, Ric McNeil, and John Griffin are the music PD's in this town who are real pros, and so deserve real respect. Don't you think?

One last thing....If JACK wakes up this town to the fact that we're all losing the listener battle to niche satellite channels, and amateur-programmed I-PODS, AND gets some real competition going...Then it will be one of the most important formats radio has seen in decades.

Forgive me Lord but I'm about sin....by agreeing with Jon David.
Where I do not feel the state of radio is as bad in LV as some people on this board make it out to be, the Best thing about the Jack format is it's sure to shake things up in LV. To much of the same thing is boring....something Fresh is always welcome.

Re: Upon Further Review....

I have to agree with you about the Jackoff format shaking things up in Vegas( wow get that I agreed) I still think a jockless format sucks. It's just a muzac box and IPods do a much better job, thats why radio perceives them as a threat and they are. Hell, I get music from Sat, both radio & TV. CD's & Ipod with no Damn commercials! Now why do I need a radio station with poor audio quality and a crap load of spots! Don't!! If I turn on the radio I want to be entertained and there ain't much of that anymore and certainly less in Vegas. Is it a Talent problem or is it a management problem? I believe Both in a big way. Most of todays management are ex- used car salesmen or they have no say so at all.
A little over a year ago I attended a Broadcasting company party here in Las Vegas. I will not reveal the company as to protect the G.M. who told me in confidence that he thought radio was becoming only a shell of what it used to be. This G.M. is a good man and I believe to quite capable of running his stations much better but has no say so at all. Programming is dictated from a national level to the local level and so called P.D's just follow instructions(another part of the problem) wheew...I'm done.

Guys -

I know the work of Craig Powers from Orange County very well. If he wasn't PD of KIIS, he should have been. His work at KEZY was phenomenal. He found the most amazing talent - at a station with a limited budget, he created a station that I preferred over KIIS and KPWR. Some of the staff:

-Jo Jo Wright (he was a 19 year old hick from texas who Craig brought over - Craig even named him, and now JoJo is one of the best in the business).
-Dancin Mark Hansen (Now Jagger in San Diego)
-Sean Demary (Spent years doing afternoons in atlanta, and now PD in san fran)

I loved listening to the station. He had great promotions, amazing weekend jocks too. Better than anything on the air now. And in fact, I doubt he padded his resume. He used to have a liner on KEZY that said "Pirate Radio wouldn't hire him and KIIS FM even fired him...."
