Who owns KNTH/1070AM?

Just curious as to who owns 1070AM now. I was driving down Westheimer earlier and noticed that KRBE has replaced their old "logo sign" outside of their building with a marble sign that simply reads, "KRBE 104.1FM 1070AM." I wasn't aware of Cumulus owning them, if that is what the situation is...

Thats actually an old sign that goes back the late 80s. It was covered up with a large image of the current logo a few years back sometime after 1070 was sold. Does anyone know if Cumulus has plan to move KRBE (back) to the loop with KFNC & KIOL? Hopefully not.

It's owned by Salem.

Actually it was around 1981. I was there when The Radio Magazine 1070 KENR became the The Radio Magazine 1070 KRBE. I hosted the afternoon show on AM-1070. By summer 1982, it was all over and simulcasting began with KRBE-FM. As David, states, Newstalk 1070 KNTH is owned by Salem Communications.

Wazzup with the RWNJ who makes little speeches during breaks on the Bennet show? He sounds like he is giving The Outer Party their Thought Message for the day.

Actually it could be the other way around, with KIOL and K-ESPN moving out Westheimer to the KRBE building. Several times on Rock 1037 I have heard the on air person mention that they will miss the view from the 23rd floor of 2700 Post Oak. My guess is when Cumulus' lease is up on 2700 Post Oak they will be Westheimer bound.

You hit the nail on the head, Mike. From what I was told by a staffer, 103.7 and 97.5 are moving to the Westheimer location sometime during the first quarter of the year. He said March, I figure sometime sooner.

Thats good news to me. I'd hate to see KRBE leave its long time home at 9801 Westheimer. So much history there. Always wondered if the old 1070 studio is still there and in use at some capacity

Will that some kind of record for "furthest distance between a studio and transmitter/COL"?

Nah...there are some farther than that....(I wonder if the old KJOJ-FM studios on I45 in Shenendoah is farther from Sargent than that will be? I seem to recall KJOJ-FM held the record for a "Houston" station at one time..even though their "main" studio was legally in Freeport)

now KIOX and 101.7 in BayCity area (Liberman) are studioed out of 3000 Bering....I wonder if the "main" studios in Bay City/Freeport have anything there now (but the current Chief of Liberman knows his stuff and probably has that covered....but if it were up to Liberman??Ehhh)

BTW 97.5 and 103.7's main studios are somewhere else (probably Beaumont) as their current and future studios are well outside the city grade signal level....

I was working at KRBE (AM & FM) circa 1983-1984. It had become brutally apparent that the viabilities of broadcasting "typical" music formats on AM frequencies was becoming more and more useless. After several weeks of discussions (including PD's and jocks from both stations) a decision was made to flip to a "Classic Rock" format. On the day of the "flip", the change was made at 6a.m. with the morning show (Paul Christy & Ted Carson) segueing (with the prerequisite station ID) from Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" to Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll". I was in the control room at the time the format flipped and popped the cork on a bottle of champagne to celebrate the significance of what this new format had to offer.

BTW, as I recall, KRBE-AM was just the second station in the country to introduce the "Classic Rock" format. There was a station in Dallas that flipped to a similar format just one day earlier.

At the time, we shared a lot of promotions with sister station 104.7 and the listeners seemed extremely pleased with what we were doing on KRBE-1070AM (other than the constant interruptions of Houston Astros' game and the interference from other stations at night when we had to switch to a directional pattern)...

Time has proven that the "Classic Rock" format is a great one. I'm just happy to have been a part of its conception and implementation.

KRBE 1070's Classic Rock format was excellent--very reminiscent of the Progressive Rock formats on FM in the late 60's-early 70's, playing all sorts of stuff that was otherwise ignored on radio. Far superior to later Classic Rock efforts from KZFX and KKRW.

There was a station in Dallas that flipped to a similar format just one day earlier.

You are probably thinking of KRQX 570, which was one of my top three favorite AM stations of all time. Mixed in some of the quality Top 40 from the 60's, but the emphasis was Classic Rock. Also one of the best engineered stations I have ever heard, proof that AM can provide excellent sound quality if done correctly.

Unfortunately when Belo sold it at the end of 1986, the new owners flipped it to 50's formatted KLDD (K-Oldies) which was a real clunker.
