Who pays for this?

Sorry if there's already a topic on this.

But if regular radio can't afford to do unpopular formats because advertisers won't support them, how can these stations exist?

Answer- HD Radio is destined to be a short lived, defective, destructive, failed, experiment. The general public realizes no benefit, isn't interested, nor are they buying into this seriously flawed HD Radio technology.

Sorry about the heckler. I believe you are referring to the FM subchannels offered by iboc stations.

It is often not a matter of no advertiser support but rather that there more lucrative formats and marketplace greed and investors force management to go after the largest return.

With the exception of WHTZ'z sub all the others seem to be simply automated thus very cheap to run. I guess that the thinking is that if they eventually go commercial they will add slightly to the revenue of the company.

This post is a textbook example of "Spin". Just like some of the political hacks on "Meet the Press". Look at what happens here......

The Question...

if regular radio can't afford to do unpopular formats because advertisers won't support them, how can these stations exist?

And them the irrelevant, off topic, talking point that is all the guest has to offer...

Answer- HD Radio is destined to be a short lived, defective, destructive, failed, experiment. The general public realizes no benefit, isn't interested, nor are they buying into this seriously flawed HD Radio technology.

Not only is it irrelevant to the question, it's even an opinion MISREPRESENTED as a fact. As in... "Answer- HD Radio is destined...." - Pure irrelevant talking points. All we need now is A few links to the East Bay Express and we'll be ready to go.

In answer to the actual question, It's been my experience that programming these additional stations has very little cost involved. In virtually all cases they are computer (Just like most regular stations) and get by with limited attention from the programming staffs. Some HD channels are beginning to get a little more attention as there gets to be a few more HD radios around. Still, as has been pointed out, there are NOT a lot of HD radios in the hands of listeners, yet. Whether that ends up happening or not remains to be seen.
