WHO Radio

Hi - I'm new to these boards and don't know a lot about the business but have always been interested in it. I noticed on the Sept 29th update of the ratings that WHO radio slid for the third time. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Are these types of variations normal or are they accurate indicators of trends? Just curious.

Perhaps its related to the station dropping the ABC News/Paul Harvey package? Most likely there's more at play here. More informed WHO watchers may know about other stats for the market that show trends or migration due to format changes.

I don't think there have been any changes on WHO other than dropping Paul Harvey and ABC. Considering the station who picked up ABC and Harvey (KWQW) isn't exactly booming in the ratings, that may not have had a big effect.

The last two ratings numbers are "trends"... not the full summer book. Trend numbers tend to go up and down a bit because the sample size isn't as large as the full book. The trend numbers are included in the final summer book, which will be released October 27th.

The drop from the winter book to the spring book might be explained by more interest in news during the November election and in winter weather coverage, and by the Hawkeye basketball broadcasts during the winter months. News-talk stations often go down a bit in the summer as people doing more outdoor activities, less interested in news, etc.

Paul Harvey/ABC switched in Aug...fall ratings began last Thursday. The trends cannot possibly show a relationship this early.

Well, the switch to Fox News on CC Stations was not soon enough to make a difference, and as for people getting sick of "conservative" radio...one might want to see the numbers on KXEL. The sleeping giant is finally waking up thanks to an infusion from Hannity. No, conservative radio is alive and well. Ask the kids at Air America when you see them on the street corners with the tin cups in their hands (and I say this with a tear in my eye as a card carrying liberal). I am thinking that the slide in the ratings for WHO is partially a problem with simulcasting dang near their entire weekends with sister WMT. Waters down the shares. It also could be that after a long time of dread, doom and just plain bad news every stinking day, people want to be uplifted when they turn on the radio, and nothing beats the blues like a serious dose of Zeppelin,Aerosmith and The Who.

Really? From what I can tell, other than Hawkeye Football for the fall, the two stations couldn't be more different on the weekends. Explain please...

As for weekdays, they simulcast an hour and a half of Mickelson; the farm show thing; and they run Limbaugh 1-4 at the same time...6 hours out of the 6a - midnight dayparts.

They are owned by Clear Channel.... They will become Average.
