Who Raised You?

If we have survived in Radio longer than a couple of years, we have been Mentored. Somewhere along the path, Elders recognized something in us that looked like it deserved nurturing and guidance. For whatever reasons, they decided to teach us at least a little of what they knew. They helped us grow--and they deserve a word of thanks here, IMO. I owe my debt to:

  • Bob Gipson
  • Phil North
  • Pat Walsh
  • Barry S. Wood
  • Wayne Moss
  • George J. Jennings

They showed me the ropes--and didn't hesitate to beat me with them when I needed it. Brilliant Radio minds, without whom I'd have had to get a haircut and a real job!

How about y'all? Who raised you?

Interesting topic! Here's my list, starting at the beginning and going through present day:

Tommy Riggs
Buddy Deane
Phil North
Buzz Bennett
Barry Wood
David B. Treadway
Ron Curtis
George Duncan
Jerry Lousteau
Hal Smith
Mark Bolke
Joe Parish
Ron Valeri
Gary Bruce
Michael Lee
Robert Lee

My list would include:
C.S. Hays
Don Rushin
J.K. Smith
Rick Woodell
John McFadden
John Landecker (and a few other jocks at WLS back in the Musicradio years)
David B. Treadway

Larry Dean...who was "the man" at kxlr in little rock back in the 70's.....gave me my first job at kxsa in the dermott/monticello area while i was in high school. he had such a perfect delivery and timber..he could do it all.

also worked with larry hart for a while at kaka/kxsa (same station) around 82 or 83....he had a pretty good voice too...sorry to hear he had passed. funny story about larry hart. the local grocery store in dermott was running a sale on chitterlings....we all know it's really "chittlins"....but not for larry....lol...he pronounced it "chitterlings" in perfect diction on the spot.....we all gave him a hard time...he never quite understood what we meant....and why no one really understood the add.....

Mel & June Spann...with on-going help from Sandy Sandine, Marv Heffington and Vernon Kuehn... Dick Schmitz (Irving Productions) ... Clayton Vaughn ...
Bill Watson ... Dick Ralston ... Ron Kirby ... Gary Clark ...Gary Reynolds ... Paul Drew ... Al Peterson ... Keith Hill ... Renee Revett ... Mike Mitchell ... Jay Walker ... Ray Sutley ... Kenny Hazelett ... Jim Hartz ... Milt Haynes ... Billy Parker
...and way more than my ego would have let me admit, back in the day, that I was LEARNING FROM when I was supposed to be the one doing the MENTORING -- Robert W Walker, Tom Cheney, Doug Christian, Jim Peters, Jack Parnell, Skip Wilkerson, Tom Gordon, Gary Ono Stevens, Roger
Borden, Mike McCarthy, Charlie Derek, George Klein, Sambo Roberts, Jim White.
Yeah...that IS a long list. But when ya learn as slow as I do, you're just damn fortunate if you have enough people with enough patience, to keep
pounding til something finally sinks in, even--especially--when they're the ones supposed to be doing the receiving. Thanks, all.

"...with on-going help from Sandy Sandine..."

Sandy Sandine was my Great-Uncle, although I never worked for him.

Those folks who were instrumental in my learning the business were:

Buddy Deane
Larry Hart
Ray Taylor
John Wellington (Wellenberger)
Shelby Cooper
A.J. Lindsey
George J. Jennings

You bunch of name droppers...j/k

Syd King (kgfl/khpq) gave me my first gig, even though he only showed me the basics and then turned me loose to make mistakes and figure out how to correct it/them/emmmmm, you know.

Wild Bill Pressly and Rusty Keller at KKYK. Tough stuff but nothing compared to...

Clyde Bass at KFIN. I learned the "mentals" of radio. Why it's done and the big picture. Hard, tough, rough but good stuff.

Ken Wall...idea genious and promo king. Fun radio at it's best under Mr. Wall

Who raised ME?! Who raised ME?!

It's more like an endless parade of nobodies that I've had to endure during my long and prosperous career. I mean really. Just thinking about all the people I've had the misfortune of coming into contact with were - and are - no talent hacks. They were/are: a) jocks that are horrible and totally unentertaining on the air. b) sales slugs that couldn't sell ice water to a man on fire. c) morons that wouldn't know a creative promotion idea if it bit him on their ample size butts. d) punk PD's that have the nerve to try to tell me how to do my show. e) Dim witted GM's that were only placed in charge because their old man kicked the bucket or is about to. f) some combination of the above.

After all, just look at the numbers now before when I got here. Every one should be thanking me for all I've done for this station.

As to my earlier post...

It was just a joke.

After reading the thread, I just got to thinking about what one of those ego driven guys would say when asked "who raised you?". So I just thought I'd have a little fun and reply in his voice. We've all worked with at least one guy like that right?

Seriously...

Steve McDonald and Danny Fox - KWKH in Shreveport
Ken Madden - in Searcy for giving me a chance to do play-by-play
Bobby Caldwell and Scott Siler - in Wynne for giving me a chance to do sports full time
Kevin Clay, Mike Kennedy - The Point in Little Rock

Wow....you really begin thinking about who you would and would not put on your list. I've seen some others
who I must have worked with at some point because they list some real losers I've worked with. But in the
big picture we actually learn from the losers too. Here's a few of those I'd mention.....

Neal Gladner
Don Griffen
Randy Smith
Ray Lincoln
Pat Lynch
Bob Harrison
Taylor Carr
Paula Cooper
Joe Rook
Broadway Joe
Greg Mizingo
Jay Worth
Scott Anderson
B.Jay Kaplan
Tommy Smith
David Bazzel
Randy Rainwater

and so many others who in their own way have influenced my ethics.....

I am one of those individuals who wears many hats, and works in radio every now and then.

Who raised me in radio????.....easy

1. Dr. Demento
2. Richard Kidd
3. Chuck Barrett

Scott Siler is very dear to my heart. He put up with a lot of our crap around the station there in Stuttgart, and under him and with the help of Johnathon Reeves our "Come to Jesus" meetings were quite entertaining...Looking back now, of course.

chuck barrett? good lord...the worst..most annoying play by play wanna be ever?

and before you ask...it's been about 15 years or more since i did any play by play...and yes i would still love the chance to dance circles around him...and i know plenty of others who could too...i dont mean to put you down...i'm sure you are a good radio person...but really...chuck barrett?
