Who replaces Dan Patrick?

I have a few ideas of what I'd like to see happen:

1. Colin Cowherd moves to 1 - 4 Eastern and Tony Kornheiser returns to ESPN Radio
2. Jason Smith takes over
3. They bring in some great, currently local talent (preferably not from New England like just about everyone else on that network)

Sadly, here are the things I think are most likely to happen:

1. John Kinkaid takes over
2. John Seibel moves up to Dan's slot
3. John Stashower and a seasonal host take over (Mel Kiper, Andy Katz, Steve Phillips, etc.)

No Kornheiser, please. I used to listen to John Kincade along with his sidekick, former Georgia QB Buck Belue, when I lived in Atlanta. John by himself is not very listenable, so a sidekick. I'm not opposed to Stashower being a host. My only concern with the seasonal hosts is how much time will they make themselves available for when their respective sports seasons come around.

I was trying to think of who might replace Dan. I think you are on the right track with Stu Scott or Steve Levy, better yet Kenny Mayne.

I don't think it's going to be real hard to replace Dan on the radio. I have great respect for Dan and love his TV persona, but the radio show really wasn't THAT special. Plus many stations clear ESPN Radio most of the day so it's not like the network will be in trouble and lose a lot of stations if they don't find a "big name" to replace him.

Kincaid wouldn't take over afternoon,. but I could see Cowherd moving to Dan's spot and Kincaid taking over Cowherd's spot.

Mr. Tony is out because of his commitment to footballl

I'm hoping it's Stu Scott or one of the other tv personalities, although for a while you may see a carousel of fill-ins

Stuart Scott is the absolute worst...so full of himself. When he tosses into a football package, the guy flips a football in his hand...what a pos...(you figure out what that stands for) What's next? He introduces Wimbeldon highlights holding a tennis racket?

Kenny Mayne would be a good choice...my vote...

Which is why I think Jason Smith could be the guy. They clearly like him enough to move him into better listening hours when someone else is out. That being said, I love the idea of Kenny Mayne taking over, but his contract is up in early 2008. I don't know that ESPN would jump in that boat unless he's sewed up for the long term. What about Scott Van Pelt? He's always great when he fills in for Dan.

Out of curiosity - what are the general clearance rates for ESPN Radio programming? I would guess that Mike & Mike and Dan had the largest clearances, but I could be totally off on this. Would appreciate some insight!

I think it might be Mike & Mike and Colin Cowherd. Dan Patrick has to compete with Jim Rome.

Another topic on this page talks about Tony Bruno leaving SNR. It was also posted that Tony said on his show that he wasn't going anywhere. Well, when someone says that...they're usually going somewhere. Would Tony be a possible replacement for Dan Patrick? Personally, I think they need a bigger name in Dan's spot than Jason Smith. Will they pick someone from the TV end of ESPN who already has some notability? Could it even be a female?

IMO they'd pick up Kornheiser in a second since he is so well known and truly LOVES doing radio. He does a better radio show in his sleep and with fewer guests than anyone on ESPN Radio currently. However, he has said many times he much prefers doing local radio as opposed to national, so when he comes back after MNF, he'll go back to either WTWP or WTEM.

Linda Cohen perhaps? She's filled in for Dan before and done a pretty good job. Also, Scott Van Pelt is covering the end of this week. Is Dan already out the door or just off the rest of the week?

I'd like to see Doug Gottlieb get the gig. He's knowledgeable, does good radio and is a former D-1 athlete who presents himself well and will ask the tough questions.

I like Gottlieb in that spot, I would put Ryen Rassillo in Doug's spot. I have become a big fan of his. I just hope I don't have to listen to the Pulse and have that Andy Gresch dude take shots at hockey every time hes on.

ESPNRadioSales.com has a lot of good information about clearance information, although I don't know if they break it down in which stations are actually clearing the program and which ones are just clearing the commercials. In most cases the ESPN contract stipulates that to be considered a full time ESPN radio affiliate a station must clear the network commercials whether they carry the programming or not (4 minutes per hour 6a-7p, 3 minutes per hour, 7p-6a and 12a-12a weekends)

When Mr. Tony was on with Dan and Keith a year ago to talk about being on Monday Night Football, Kornheiser all but admitted, when prompted by Keith, that he had burned his bridges with ESPN Radio and that it had taken a lot of work on Dan and Phil's part to get Tony cleared to make the guest appearance.

I would like to see Kenny Mayne, Doug Gottlieb, Stuart Scott or Scott Van Pelt take over Dan's show. I think they're all good. I also liked Tony K but don't think that'll be happening. Personally, I'll miss Dan's show. I thought it was very good and I respect his ability to be hardnosed sports guy in addition to communicating on a broader sense.

I don't know if it really matters who ESPN brings in to replace Dan. Don't you think a lot of his affiliates are going to follow him to his new Content Factory show?

Not if they actually study his ratings performance they won't.
His performance in NY, Atlanta and Dallas was just awful.
