Granted, it's been 10 years since Mr. Butler turned the keys over to Gulfstar/Capstar/Chancellor/AMFM/Clear Channel, and a lot of water has gone under the bridge, but there were a lot of small steps that led to a long decline:
Mr. Butler being told he could sell, or he could go bankrupt trying to compete with a real cluster.
Mr. Rogers preparing for the sale by cutting spending.
The newsroom staff kicked to the curb.
Steve Gary removed from the Music Director's chair.
Tom Allen removed from KASE morning drive.
Waylon, Smith, Chandler, and all the other experienced sales staff leaving.
Mr. Rogers being told he was just a hick-local, and national corporate managers knew best.
Mr. Rogers being removed.
Kase being re-imaged.
David Anderson getting canned.
Mac Daniel leaving.
Dave Marcum leaving.
and then the descent into Clear Channel meat-cleaver budgeting.
I'm sure there were many more, but I must say the damage done by Cruise was the most severe, and the most unnecessary. He screwed the pooch.
Kudos to Mac Daniel for being able to do as much as he did for KVET, since the corporate programmers decided KASE was to be the main station, with the lions share of the resources.
Just one man's view, on the tragic destruction of one of the most successful radio operations EVER.
