Who sang early version of song SUSPICION

Hi Folks:

Remeber the song "Suspicion" by Terry Stafford? I heard an early/alternative easy listining version on the oldies internet station I listen to.

I am curious who sang it. Emailing the station did not yield results. Any ideas? The song had a late 50's/early 60's sound to it.

Thanks,

Mike

Elvis did the original on his Pot Luck LP, but that's probably not the answer you're looking for.

Elvis first on "Suspicion". However it may have been Eddie Rabbit "Suspicions" from 1979 or the Sidekicks from '66.

It was Elvis. I've heard it on a local HD-2 station.

My understanding was always that Elvis had the original. RCA/Col. Tom, decided for whatever releason not to release it as a single. So along came soundalike Stafford who released it and had the chart hit version. Similar to what happened three years previous, when Joe Dowell covered "Wooden Heart" and took it to #1.

Hi Folks:

No, it was not the Elvis version. It was an easy listining version that fits more with the Standards format instea dof Rock N. Roll oldies.

Thanks for the suggestion so far.

Mike

Hi Folks:

Boy was I wrong. It was the Elvis version I heard. Funny, it didn't sound like him when I heard it. I guess this makes the whole thread pointless.

Thanks,

Mike

Tom Kent used to play the Elvis version from time to time.  Maybe he still does!  I don't know.  No one in Nashville carries him anymore.

Interesting factoid about the Terry Stafford version:  it was #6 the same week the Beatles held down the top five!  Theoretically, if it hadn't been for the Beatles, Stafford might have had himself a #1 hit!  Also interesting to think that an Elvis soundalike would have been backing up the Beatles on the chart like that.  Especially since the Beatles were seen as the successor to Elvis' crown!

Personally, I thought Stafford's version and Elvis' version sounded very similar!

Anyone recall Stafford's follow-up to "Suspicion"?

"I'll Touch a Star" was a more downtempo, rather syrupy effort with some slightly bizzare electronic effects. (I actually have it on my Ipod).

I'll Touch A Star, is actually pretty good.

Also, In1961, Elvis sound-a-Like Ral Donner Released "The Girl Of My Best Friend" which Elvis released on his "Elvis Is Back" album,in 1960. Listen To Ral Donners "So Close To Heaven" , you'll swear it's Elvis.
Ral Donner is considered one of the best Elvis impersonators and was chosen as the voice on a documentary/movie ("This is Elvis") released shortly after Elvis died.

I personally think Ronnie McDowell is the best Elvis impersonator, he was chosen by Dick Clark as the voice of Elvis for the Kurt Russell, Elvis Bio-Pic. McDowell has GREAT song called "The King Is Gone"

Elvis is still the hardest working deadman in show biz. 2007 beat out Tu-Pac in sales

And, don't think for a moment the "similarity" wasn't intentional...'cause it was.

Terry Stafford's "Suspicion" actually peaked at #3, With "Cant Buy Me Love" &"Hello Dolly" blocking the way .

The Billboard charts tell us that 32 songs prevented "Suspicion" from becoming #1 in 1964. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was #1 for the year.

As well it should have been.
