Who should get the new NFL Thanksgiving Host Game?

With the Dallas Game moving to the NFL Network

for one season it's time to observe the obvious

WHO SHOULD GET THE THIRD NFL THANKSGIVING GAME?

I wouldn't mine personally seeing an AFC team getting the nod

so that way there would be a pure NFC game (FOX), and a pure AFC game (CBS)

I think this will eventuall work out for the NFL Network.

Imagine how many people started watching ESPN after 1987

I'm biased since I'm from Pittsburgh, but I think it's gotta be the Steelers, since they have such a nationwide fan base nowadays.

And a lot of those people are more than likely bandwagon fans, seeing as how the Steelers are in the Super Bowl next week. I think Detroit should keep the 12:30 (EST) game, Dallas should stay at 4:15, then rotate the late game (8 p.m. kick?) between AFC and NFC sites each year.

I couldn't help but notice a sort of geographical line of thinking here. In keeping with that, I think an 8PM start time would be a great showcase for a team in the western division of either conference. In the AFC, the Raiders have a great fan base, as do the Broncos.

How about New England?

The Steelers do have a huge following, but what better team to represent on an American holiday than... the Patriots?
______________

And, to my knowledge, if they keep the format, the AFC team goes to Detroit this year. I suggest that the AFC team goes to either Detroit or Dallas every year, with the other game be a all NFC game and the other be an all AFC game, so you will have 3 AFC and 3 NFC teams playing on Turkey day.
Edited by jojo_collins on 01/29/06 02:43 AM.

To HELL with the Patriots! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO glad they're not ruining another Super Bowl! As a Dolphins fan, I've got only one thing to say: GO SEAHAWKS!!

By the way, what is the original poster referring to? Detroit will be on CBS this Thanksgiving. The only two AFC teams that the Lions are hosting are the Dolphins and the Bills. As you may know, CBS carries the interconference game when the AFC is the visitor. Can you say Dolphins vs Lions? I know I can! :)

Re: How about New England?

Adding Foxboro, Massachusetts as the third host site for an NFL game on Thanksgiving would bring in the number-five TV market (Boston/Worcester/Manchester/Cape Cod) every year.

But the Boston area would be "Footballed-out" on Thanksgiving: Traditionally, Thanksgiving is the final day of the regular-season for high-school football in Eastern Massachusetts, with teams playing at 10 A.M. in the morning. BTW, league champions go on to semifinal playoffs in their respective divisions the Tuesday night after Thanksgiving. The semifinal winners go on to play in seven divisional championship games (and yes, they are called Super Bowls) the first weekend in December.

Adding a Patriots' game at Foxboro every year on Thanksgiving, even at night, would probably wound high-school games from both media interest (WCVB-5 in Boston every year does a half-hour program on Thanksgiving night with highlights of key high-school football games in the Boston area, scores of all games, and a rundown of playoff matchups; while the two major Boston newspapers each have extensive coverage of Turkey-Day high-school football games) and fan attendance.

I'd say a major market whose high-school football teams don't play on Thanksgiving would be a more likely host for the third NFL Thanksgiving game.

The Philadelphia market also fits that category, Joseph, so expect no Thanksgving game from the Linc.

One of the rituals of my Thanksgiving night (after we get home from whatever company we have dinner with that night) is putting on KYW 1060 to hear all of the Philly area HS football scores from that day, with a college fight song medley as a music bed. :)

One Thanksgiving rivalry in the Philly area consists of, on one side, the school I grew up a mile up the street from (but didn't attend) and on the other, the school where my father taught (I attended a private school, and not a silver spoonish one either).

On the first part of your post, while there are some folks out there who are bandwagon fans for the Steelers, there are alot of true fans out there for them as well-I live in Vegas and even before this Super Bowl run, I saw countless Steelers fans... But back to the subject at hand, since 2 NFC cities currently host the game, it should be an AFC city to get the third game.. IMO, it should be the AFC Super Bowl representative, kind of like how ABC broadcast the opening game in the past with the SUper Bowl winner...

Hi everyone:

> With the Dallas Game moving to the NFL Network

Why didn't they take the Detroit Lions? The Lions have a MUCH longer history of playing on Thanksgiving than Dallas does.

> for one season it's time to observe the obvious
>
> WHO SHOULD GET THE THIRD NFL THANKSGIVING GAME?

Simple. Either ESPN or NBC.

> I wouldn't mine personally seeing an AFC team getting the
> nod

Since Denver has played two of the last three Thanksgiving Day games against Dallas, I see no reason why they shouldn't be selected - AND TO HAVE IT AT HOME TOO.

> so that way there would be a pure NFC game (FOX), and a pure

With the Inter-Conference game going to either NBC or ESPN.

> I think this will eventuall work out for the NFL Network.

I can even see THEM doing the (currently proposed) Saturday Night games themselves UNLESS of course the CW takes everyone by surprise and jumps into the fray (which at this point is certainly conceivable and not outside the realm of possibility with CBS supplying the production crew and other behind-the-scenes people and TNT supplying the on-air talent).

> Imagine how many people started watching ESPN after 1987

Yeah. Seems like yesterday, doesn't it? :)

Cheers :)

I say give DENVER the late game 'cause at least the game won't end at a time when people would just be exhausted with the day's activities as would be the case on the East Coast with a 11:00 PM or later ending (Anyone here still remember that Jets MNF game a few years back that went till nearly 1:00 AM the next day?).

In other words, the game would end at a more civilized hour for Thanksgiving as it would end at 9:00 PM or a tad later.

Not only that, we're also an AFC city.

Just my obviously biased opinion though :)
