Who should replace Paul Sullivan?

My vote goes to Harvey Wharfield. He is topical and funny. He just doesn't like the biz anymore.

A P.D. drafted him for WZLX back in the 80s - maybe it can happen again?

No,WBZ will choose someone who they know and who is not an ad hominem attacker like those on WRKO and WTKK.

The last firebrand on WBZ radio was Jerry Williams back in the 60's and once Jerry made Nixon's "Ememy's List" the did not renew his contract even though he was Number One in his time slot.

I predict that they will select Jordan Rich if he wants it.

A good man who is always fair and balanced before the phony Fox Network came up with that phrase which they don't honor.

On the other hand they may break up the 8 -Midnight schedule with two hosts. Perhaps, Jordan Rich followed by Steve Leveille.

Morgan White, Jr. would then take the over night although I would like to see Bob Katzan take that slot. Bob was on with Morgan the other night and he is naturally funny and creative. I had the opportunity to work with him on the old WMRE and I saw first hand what an immense talent his is.

In other words somebody boring.

I like Bob Katzan as a person. On the air he tends to be dry - I find myself listening because he's a cool guy that I know, not because he entertains me. Bob is a better producer - he is smart, has the facts, and could be an asset to any program. Maybe as a co-host, but not on his own.

Joe Sciacca was very good on WRKO on Monday; of course he's had time on WCCM in Lawrence to work on translating his print to radio. Perhaps Sciacca could be in the running.

It's a slippery slope to say the words M.P. but he is a talent and he is in Boston. The controversy would certainly get a lot of ink for any station, especially in the INSIDE TRACK since they were on 96.9 with M.P.

It was said somewhere that Rich might not be what WBZ wants because he isn't "political" enough though he
has touched upon current events, etc.

Fox being fair and balanced: there are more than a few libs on the network (Geraldo, Colmes etc.) --it's
not exactly 50-50 but the conservative quotient at least helps to balance out the liberal bias on
other networks (broadcasting and cable alike).

MP= Mark Parenteau? ooh...

A lot of good choices listed, but I think that WBZ - rather than look into the talent pool - will instead expand its news coverage from the current 5 A.M.-8 P.M. to 5 A.M.-12 Midnight around Labor Day, therefore "switching" its format from news/talk to just news. Once some of the other talk show hosts (i.e. Lovell Dyett for one) retire, its news will expand by that much until they become all news all the time on a 24/7 basis.

BTW, I think that WZLX will grab (i.e. be stuck with) the B's next season. WROR can go on and promote itself as "classic rock with no sports," while 'ZLX can fire back saying "all classic rock with no disco." (Remember that on WCOZ?)

Won't happen. WBZ doesn't like drastic changes. Will probably keep line-up through the summer and then make changes after Labor Day.

I would think they'd want to stay with local talk. Maybe start it at 9 pm though...?
I can't see them going with syndie, either live or tape delayed (but if they want to
throw a syndie talker in--yup, you guessed it, Dennis Miller!)

Yes in many cities you do have news around the clock on truly "all news stations" and
maybe it could work here, but I'd think the listenership may be higher with talk. (If they
had gotten Red Sox rights--too rich for CBS'--it would have been great for them, much
like WCBS and how they have the Yankees. (And for those who still want news at
night, NY does have WINS too, right? in fact, co-owned by CBS! So when the Yankees
game starts people can still hear news via 1010.

Speaking of that PD from WZLX, Bill Smith, why isn't he talking to BZ about the gig?

The Bruins not on WBZ, David Brudnoy will be spinning...they were a major annoyance to him.

Jon Keller would be good but I don't see him leaving TV especially with a Presidential race underway.

Don't expect any quick decision. Peter Casey will take as long as he can to pick someone. I don't see them adding more news. But, they may split the evening into 2 shows.

I find Morgan White a complete bore. He is such a kiss ass about working at BZ and the trivia game he does at 4am is so corny and dull to listen to. The show is more about him and the people he has met and less about the callers and the guests.

Bradley J isn't much better.

If they did a 7pm or 8pm to 10pm and a 10 to midnight shift Joran Rich would be an excellent choice for the 10 to midnight. He is always well prepared and does a great interview. They had him fill in one night when Madeline Albright was the guest so I don't think they are to worried about his skills I think they may want a name in that slot. Although Paul Sullivan wasn't very well known when he joined BZ.

They have had good luck with non radio people in the past David Finnegan had never done a show or had Peter Meade.

Look for BZ to reup with the Bruins.

I'm surprised that nobody has suggested Chris Lydon--very much in the Brudnoy traditition but more liberal and minus the mangled syntax. (OK, the syntax problem was more evident in Brudnoy's essentially unreadable movie reviews, but he really made a fool of himself with his unending William F Buckley act; it was kind of a running joke.)

Anyhow, Lydon is available. Question is does he understand that, as on on-the-beach radio personality, his bargaining position is, well, not all that strong? I suspect he might approach CBS with a deal that starts with, "First put the WBZ broadcast license in my name..." A lot of his problems at WBUR et al apparently stemmed from an inflated opinion of how much money his talent could command.

I became a big fan of Morgan's Talking Trivia back in the 80s and he's still entertaining in a live venue like
the Coolidge Corner Clubhouse. When he does fill-ins on WBZ if the guest isn't of interest to me, I'm not as
prone to listen. Talking Trivia was good not just because of the trivia game content but also the regular
callers who'd take part (I was among them in the final shows on WMRE and also on WKOX...I remember one
time when I was working the graveyard shift and also kept those hours on weekends, and one time we
all met for breakfast at a place in Natick called the Fox Trot, right after the show.

Among Morgan's regulars were Frank Ochieng, who will be heard with Jordan once again on "Movie Night"
this Sat. night at midnight. There was also Dave the trivia expert from Melrose (got on Jeopardy) and several
other folks (one or two of whom have passed on since the 80s). When Morgan does trivia on the radio
it can be entertaining--I remember his appearances with Brudnoy, Bob Raleigh, etc.

I think I have a bias against raspy voiced hosts (though Morgan himself is slightly raspy)--so Bradley
Jay doesn't quite hold my interest. It might come from the fact that I've attempted to do shows when I
had a bad cold and never liked hearing my voice (either through the headphones or on an aircheck
tape) in that situation

Man these decisions are made way higher up than that.

1. Believe it or not Peter casey and the BZ radio GM will make the decision themselves. I doubt CBS in New York will have little imput.

2. I liked Talking Trivia on 1510 and Morgan as a person. His live shows are fun but he just doesn't do it for me on BZ.

3. The thing about Chris Lydon is he is used to doing a 2 hour show with an entire team of producers and researchers along with his longtime Executive Producer who demands a big salary.
At BZ you share one person with the other shows who works during the day booking guests and a board operator during the show who screens calls. The adjustment from public radio to the lean and mean CBS radio might be to much for Chris Lydon.

Agguy has it right on those three points.

However I'm with anyone who suggests Jordan Rich. He's a good pick.

I've heard Peter Casey knows what he's doing and I don't think anything will happen soon either.

I think that either Jordan Rich or Steve Leveille would be prime for that spot, that is if they want it. I will say this much, if Steve does go 8-12PM, I will be listening to WBZ much more, although probably not as much when I go to bed though. That could be a demo problem for 'BZ as they would no longer automatically be the station that I am tuned into when I wake up, although I would likely switch it to them anyhow.
