WHO THINKS SMOOTH 98.1 IS A GREAT SOUNDING STATION??

I do!!

Great mix of A/C, R & B, Pop and even Country.

Only tweak...Could add a few more currents into the mix!

Anyone else think the same??

It sounds like all the other AC stations out there. That's like saying Channel 9-3-3 is a great Top 40 station that plays a mix of pop, hip-hip, R&B, but could use a little more re-currents. Terrestrial radio has become stale because all the niche formats and interesting stations don't get recognized on PPM and end up flipping to something more common. I'm surprised Magic 92.5 is doing so well.

Maybe they're serving a large niche?

Why is it so evil for a station to try to appeal to the largest number of listeners? Isn't that the whole point?

Broadcasting is now narrowcasting and if you try to appeal to too many kinds of people, then you appeal to no one. You have to keep it focused.

Yes, but if you focus too much, you end up appealing to no one. There's only so many left handed redheaded soccer players in a market.

I think we can all agree that the Smooth Jazz ship of the 1990's has sailed. It had a good run, but it's done. Or more precisely, it's evolved into something that's relevant to today's 25-54 audience. I love Spyro Gyra, but even I'm sick of Morning Dance.

KIFM sounds alot like KyXy did in the early 2000's. Basically looks like they are going after the audience that KyXy kicked to the curb by focusing more on Hot AC to go after Star and having Jeff and Jerk on the air. Good job KIFM there is a good niche for you, and they will make lots of money Im sure. KyXy is just too hard for the dentist office now.

All AC stations have become progressively hotter compared to 10 years ago to keep the audience from aging out of the format.

If you look at it from that standpoint, this is the natural progression for NAC. If today's hot AC is yesterday's CHR and today's soft AC is yesterday's hot AC, then today's NAC is yesterday's soft AC.

With that line of logic then todays classic rock is yesterdays big band and standards. So KGB has become KPOP all over again

Once we get too old, we'll be lucky to get Zepplin on a scratchy AM station because we're no longer in the demo.

You already see the beginnings of it with classic rock stations phasing out most 60's records and concentrating on 70's and 80's. If the station's target never changes, then the music you play to reach that target will change.
