Who Was Flip Fryer (KITS)?

Somebody out there will know this one immediately...

Who was the jock who called himself "Flip Fryer" at Hot Hits 105 KITS in the mid-1980s? I have listened to the aircheck a dozen times and I know the voice, but I just can't place it. Could it be Joe Ike? Or is it Bobby Ocean?

Have a listen yourself:

Flip Fryer Aircheck (5 min.)

D.J.

Rick Chase, who ruled the afternoons at KMEL through the 90's.

After exiting KMEL, he went north to Sacramento. KZZO, the Zone, was his new home. He made a name for himself there as well. Pushed the envelope too far and was let go. Then he went to Reno. KWNZ, I believe. Then came back to California to Stockton. One day he did not show up for his morning show. He was later found dead at his home. Cause of death was not determined.

Any idea why he was working as "Flip Fryer"? I'm assuming it's a reference to flipping burgers at a fast-food joint ... was he under a non-compete, maybe, or was this just a put-on?

NO, Flip Fryer was Rick Chase....

You know Rick actually applied to work at The Bridge 100.7 when it first went on air...Rick went Super Christian.

I don't think it was a non-compete thing since they would likely be caught doing it anyway. It was usually just for fun. Lee "Baby" Simms did a short run as "Mathew Doc Frail" in LA. I never knew if it was a reference to Gunsmoke, or what. Robert W. Morgan would occasionally fill in for another DJ, usually using unusal names.

Strangely enough, I have zero recordings of Rick Chase -- unless the "Flip Fryer" aircheck is actually him.

The museum's John London collection includes one aircheck (actually a London & Engleman show from KMEL) and it's only about five minutes long, with the music horribly 'scoped out.

If anybody has anything to contribute, let me know.

It's Rick Chase

I haven't listened to the aircheck, and don't remember enough about Rick's voice to identify it, but I'm sure it's him. For one, I believe "Flip Fryer" was a play on his legal name...which I used to know, but forgot.

Yep, he got the idea off his birth certificate.

I did a little digging -- Rick Chase's real name was George Fryer.

Yep, you are correct. I have no idea how I knew that, but I knew "Fry" was in there somewhere. It'd make perfect sense for him to have used "Flip Fryer" as an air name, even as a joke. Or, heck, maybe someone was making fun of him!
