Who was your mentor?

I know this thread is 4 radio mentors but I don’t care I’m gonna say this anyway, my mentor was my brother. He was 4 yrs older then me and he took me to my 1st shows, big day outs, Music midtowns, dtown rocks. How many guys would let their 12 yr old bro tag along but he did, with him and his friends. He was the smartest coolest guy I knew and even when he got sick he didn’t feel sorry 4 himself he acted more worried bout every1 else.
Almost every time axel was just coming on the air as he was hooking up to chemo so we turn it up try to forget what the fk was really going on. when he got worse he gave me his license so I could get into clubs told me to not miss out on the music .
He wanted to be a dj. He died in 5 months ago. he was 24.
Just wanted 2 give him props 4 what is worth.

I can't think of a better mentor to have. My sincerest sympathies. Sounds like a wonderful brother to have had. He and Jack Armstrong are probably cranking up the studio monitor in heaven right about now.

How to be and how to treat people= Leslie Fram.

How not to be and how not to treat people= Bob Neumann

To "Inside Your Head": You and your brother both were very lucky to have each other. I salute you and him both. A mentor can be anyone who takes the hand - figuratively or literally - of someone who has yet to 'learn the ropes' and gives of their time and talents and passion to help the newbie take hold of that same passion.

It's not the AMOUNT of time someone spends with us, it's the QUALITY of that time. Your brother apparently made every minute count and you'll have that with you forever. We should all be so lucky.

I had to chime in eventually on this thread. I've met people in every market I've been fortunate enough to be in who have been mentors and taught me invaluable lessons in various disciplines. I think we all have mentors all the way through life, if we notice they are there. My list if you guys don't mind:

Harold Beckholt/WSPA who gave a kid with a 1st class license a shot at being the assistant engineer (and I got to sign on and do 5a to 5:30am on the am and fm).

Tony Brooks/WORD who gave the same kid the 12m-6m slot at one of "the" medium market top 40 stations of the era and gave me a chance to rub shoulders with a lot of talent moving up and occasionally down the market ladder. (I still have a McCoy Calls the World biz card from when Steve was there)

Bob Brown/WORD who gave me 7-12m then afternoon drive at times (he looked just like the "big guy" on wkrp and taught me how to appreciate good single malt)

J J Hemingway for showing me how to present the music, not just play it.
Don Crane for showing me the fun stuff am directional arrays are made of, and how to smile confidently at the boss even when you had NO idea how you fixed something. I still use that tactic today occasionally heheh.

Barry Brown/WSYN for showing that allllll the little details, even in audio processing, can make a oldies station a living legend in it's own time instead of just another place on the dial. Thanks for hiring me then :) Yes, I'd do it again.

Kemosabie Joe/WSYN for teaching-by-example how to program and all the air check coaching. :)

The Freakin' Deacon/WSYN for saying on his last break before me, "I'm outta here and making way for some -real- talent" .. Deacon was another "show ya how its done by example" guy.

Sissy Hall for making me have to take my on-air game up a notch. Anyone heard her on the air in Myrtle Beach knows what I mean.

Allen Power for showing how to assemble and lead a team with the utmost kindness, fairness, and passion for what he was doing. I was fortunate enough to watch Allen do that in more than one market. Thanks AP :)

Bob Lipscomb and Skipper Marshall for how to always smile even when it's a nasty 3am post-thunderstorm fix we're doing in downtown Atlanta and for being a real-life Laurel and Hardy team at many a tower site *grin*

That's why I say we always have mentors all along life's path :)

scott and x14, thx.

No worries, man. I feel you. Your story has meaning for me...trust me on that. With the gift he gave you of your fine memory of him, is he really gone? Sometimes I wonder..

remember, take care.
;)

Inside your head -- "radio" is silly compared to what you've shared here. Your brother sounds like the best of the best, and there's nothing that could in any way be equal to the way he treated you and the way you responded. I lost my younger brother 4 years ago and am still not over it...I can relate just a bit to what you've described. But be sure that the class act your brother was and still is remains in your heart and will never, ever go away. I think of my brother every single day, but with happiness, because I know what a good man he was and while I miss him more than I can describe, I have to tell you that as time goes by the smiles become more and the pain becomes less. Please hang in there. You honor your brother by calling him your mentor. I wish I'd known him.

You'd better watch out...or you won't be 71noname forever. Looking at this and another of your posts, assuming all the info is legit (and I have no reason to think it isn't, mind you), all I can say is...you're gonna blow your own cover(your secret is safe with me, tho...lol). You're right...especially about the Deac. One of the biggest compliments I ever received was when Deac and I were doing a remote at the big, blue Xanadu (or as a very good mutual friend of ours used to call, 'Xanadu-du'). We had cut the block to, um...er....let's say "attitude adjust". We were laughing uncontrollably as we were heading back into Xanadu when Deac put his arm around me just before we stepped back through the door and said, "I'll tell ya what boobie, this reminds Daddy Rabbit of the OLD DAYS with Fowler and Milan". It's still high praise from a one of the last true originals in radio. Funniest mofo I've ever known in radio...although you ain't bad, brother. Hope you're well. Tell our mutual friend from the Myrtle Beach Mafia hello...although he calls a brother back once in a while.

Hmmm... you are pretty quick on the draw there my friend...!!! I am well brotha... Hope you are too! Frankly, nobody ever did a BIGGER afternoon Drive show than you (from the 803 I might add...!)

Roger that... Xanadu was off the chain back in the day... ;-p
btw... You hurry up!!! you take long time!! Tell your friend to hurry!!! :)

Carful now boys… You are entering a realm reserved for “Horsemen”. ;D

You are correct, Smitty, I stand corrected. And, dare I say, unlike Skull & Bones, any "Horsemen" laden litany of achievements is secret.
My apologies.

Charles Giddens RIP :'(

He passed away on 9/10 2001. I always took a little comfort knowing he never had to experience a post 9/11 world.

I'm with Scott you sound like someone who was involved in the Largest Banana drop in history..in the queen city.
