Who will be biggest Format flip of 2016

Given that no one saw the 92.3 format flip coming at this time last year, I think it is pointless to try to predict any format flips for 2016, much less the "biggest".

In that spirit:
KLAC to Polka will be the biggest flip of 2016.

Many on this board were predicting CBS would find a home for Sports Talk on the FM dial. 94.7 KTWV was the likely candidate. But then, as mentioned above, Urban AC/Oldies left 92.3 and many of those listeners migrated to KTWV, which is now around #5 or 6 in the ratings. Even though CBS has very successful FM Sports stations in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore and Pittsburgh (Dallas and Washington are so-so and CBS gave up on Tampa), it doesn't look like CBS will be bringing FM Sports to LA anytime soon.

But who knows? Someone might be tempted.

Whoever ends up with the Rams.

Not necessarily.

In many markets, the NFL team is on the Classic Rock station in the market, because the demographics are a good fit.

Fact: Entercom's Classic Rock FMs in Rochester, Seattle, and Kansas City, among others, also have NFL games. Hmmmm, don't they own 100.3/KSWD The Sound?

Not in Seattle (in fact their rock station, KISW is mostly new rock). The Seahawks call Bonneville's KIRO-AM/FM home (ESPN Radio and N/T respectively)........And KCFX in Kansas City belongs to Cumulus. But the Rochester station does broadcast Buffalo Bills games, so you're 1 for 3 :)

Kpwr-power 106 to dance station and drop hiphop

Not going to happen. Emmis is big enough to have seen that EDM as a format is not saleable, and they'd blow up the format for something entirely new if the billings were dropping to those kind of levels EDM has gotten everywhere else it's been tried.

Researching this was difficult and I openly admit that I wasn't able to cross-check things as well as I should have.

But even at one for three, I think my point was made that getting the Rams would not automatically signal a change to a Sports format ... especially not when NFL teams play exactly one game per week (compared to the schedules for MLB and NBA during their seasons). Tough to build a "brand" around that small an amount of live game play-by-play. But NFL teams do affiliate with Classic Rock stations in some markets and Entercom has shown that they will do that when the opportunity exists.

So I still think KSWD could be on the list of possibles.

Darn makes me wish all the Rams games would be on Monday morning or any morning for that matter .....

It would still be all talking with no rocking.

BTW, is it just me or does anyone else find the new Mark show to be off-putting? I will stipulate that I generally like to rock in the morning, and if I do listen to talk, it is to either news or an interesting talker (not too many of them left though) and not a crazy "morning zoo", so I am not really the target audience. In the past I only listened to Mark and Brian occasionally; I now only listen to the Mark show occasionally (and for very short spurts at that). That said, M&B was a much more interesting show and the obvious give and take of two talents coming from two different places gave the show the yin and yang thing which is what I believe made it so popular.

But now, Mark is in charge, he doesn't need any co-hosts with equal billing (and he wants you to know it), and man it comes off that way - everyone on the show is so deferential to him, (one of them is his daughter, so of course). And for my money, it is just less interesting. The fact that he is three time zones away while everyone else is interacting with him on the monitor also makes it seem so artificial. The problem is that his show feels like yesterday's news, yet there aren't any fresh new morning show hosts that are compelling and relevant enough to take his place. But what the heck, the Sound doesn't play any records newer than 20 years old, so maybe the best thing is the over 20 year old morning show to go with it.

Alt 98.7 to Active Rock. Since X103.9 has gone away, the two Rock stations in Palm Springs has gone up it ratings.

Together KCLB and KRHQ are billing about what KCLB billed a few years ago. KCLB is off by about 50% since 2010.

KYSR is anywhere from 7th to 11th in 18-49 in LA, and did a healthy $17 in revenue in 2015 on much lower numbers.

Why would KYSR change to a format that has not worked in LA and where they would lose very good billing while trying to create a format that has no track record and no billing?

I echo David's hypothetical.

I think our new friend with all of two posts is unaware of the many past discussions on the subject before he arrived here.

Maybe he can read these:

I agree. But then having looked at Rhythmic to Mainstream transitions that took place at KYLD, XHTZ, and WPOW, one has to wonder if KPWR could be heading down that route if the fortunes don't improve.

That, of course, is always a possibility. Going to some kind of mainstream pop format is usually among the options when format changes are being discussed.
