Who Will Be The First FM Sports Parkinglot?

SeeBS buys an FM in the Big Apple to put their legendary Ancient Modulation Sports Parkinglot where the listeners are http://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n25658 And this was no coverage impaired AM signal either...50kw non-D at 6~Sixty. Is the Camel's clock tickin', or will TMISU offer a sacrifice on the Peak? Nurse Jeff and I think it's just a matter of time now!

CBS needs a Noo Yawk "flagship" for its new sports network, while at the same time they have to keep their successful local presence. It'll be a 660/101.9 simulcast for a few months, then my guess is that CBS Sports Radio will take over 660 and the local sports-blather will be FM-only. And, CBS will have to sell one property, most likely either WINS 1010 or their KCAL-wannabe on Channel 55.

Another reason for CBS to do this is that they just re-upped with the Yankees (currently on WCBS), and the Steinbrenner boys insisted on moving to FM. This also allows WCBS to stay all-news during baseball season while keeping America's Most Hated Team Not Owned By Jerry Jones happy.

Merlin "allegedly" wants to concentrate on their stations in Chicago and Philly. I'll believe it right up to the day that they sell 101.1 in Chicago to CBS for WSCR-FM. If this was to happen, CBS would have ownership issues in Chicago as well.

How does it affect Phoenix? Probably not one bit. I'll still believe CBS Sports Radio 107.9 (or 94.5 or 101.5) when I see it. I don't think 24/7 network fare in any format would do well on FM, and CBS doesn't own an AM here. But I can't see them farming out their own product to anyone else. Maybe I can start a rumor that they plan to buy 1580 from The Mickey Mouse Outfit. ;D

Correction: The Yankees haven't signed with anyone yet for 2013 and beyond, but both they and the Mets will be signing new deals for next season. Both ESPN and CBS want them, and both will need an FM presence (ESPN Noo Yawk has already moved from 1050 to 98.7).

Correction #2: CBS hasn't "officially" said what they're going to do with 660, but they do need a full-time NYC station to keep advertisers happy, and AM 660 would be the best place for it. Same goes for Chicago and LA - they'll need full-time, full-market affiliates in those cities for the same reason, and right now they don't have them.

CBS Sports Network is coming to a Phoenix radio station near you. The questions are (1) where and (2) when and nobody knows the answers yet. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if CBS ruffled some feathers around here and made a drastic move.

Imo, an increased CBS radio presence wouldn't be a bad thing. I still can't believe CBS doesn't have a local affiliate for their CBS Radio news hourly updates. Along with ABC and FOX News, CBS is one of the largest radio news outlets and they don't have a presence in Phoenix and that boggles my mind. Time to make your mark known in Phoenix Les Moonves!

I don't think we'll see it. At least not anytime soon. They just re-branded 107.9, 94.5 is still a cash cow, and 101.5 gets these very important things known as "ratings."

I don't see them buying an Ancient Modulation signal here either, as the New York move seems to indicate exactly what they think of the future of AM.

That leaves an FM that CBS doesn't currently own as the most likely option, but I don't know of any such station with a for sale sign in the window.

One can never be too sure. WFAN will simulcast on both 660 AM and 101.9 FM for starters, but I expect that eventually 660 AM and its 50 kW blaster will become the flagship for CBS Sports Radio. WFAN's live and local sports talk will then go to 101.9 FM exclusively.

IMHO, CBS is carefully watching top 20 markets (Phoenix is certainly one) in which it owns stations, weighing the options for implementing their national strategy. Tampa is a smaller market than Phoenix and CBS recently put sports on FM there. I wouldn't count Phoenix out.

When Mike Francesa announced WFAN's addition of FM on his program, he said that CBS had been considering such a move for at least the last five years. :)

It will be interesting to see how Mets and Yankees broadcasts will be handled in 2013. Before the WFAN FM announcement, both baseball teams re-upped for one year on 660 AM and 880 AM. I think the Mets will depart to 98.7 FM in 2014 while the Yankees simulcast on 660 AM and 101.9 FM.

As much as the Yankees want FM, they don't want to give up access to 25 states at night. Also, the Yankees have always been on a station that catered to them exclusively. Yankees fans and Giants fans are generally thought to be linked at the hip, but though both teams once shared Yankee Stadium, they never shared the same radio station.

This demands the following question. Will the Yankees demand that all their games be simulcast on 660 AM and 101.9 FM, forcing the Giants to move to 101.1 FM? CBS-FM fans don't want to hear that! One or two pre-emptions a year for pre-season football makes their blood boil! Or when football and baseball overlap, the Yankee game airs on 660, the Giants air on 101.9 and CBS-FM stays with their classic hits format. When baseball season ends, Giants' games would be simulcast on 660 AM and 101.9 FM. Of course, that makes too much sense!

This will get very interesting! :)

But this is irrelevant to Phoenix, where all local play-by-play, save for the locked-out Coyotes, is owned by TMISU. CBS would have to make a big play for one of the pro teams (the Cards being the most likely to move, given their history) or ASU for sports to work for them.

And would a 24/7 CBS Sports Radio satellator on FM even work? The return of network radio seems more suited to Ancient Modulation, which is where the network will eventually go in NYC, either on 660 or 1010. Jim Rome still has a following here, but I can't see it working the rest of the day.

Sorry for getting a bit carried away! My bad!

A CBS FM sports station on a South Mountain stick would certainly be attractive to Phoenix teams. It would give TMISU something they're not used to, competition for pxp rights in Phoenix. It's anyone's guess how TMISU will react to that!

I agree with you that a 24/7 CBS Sports Radio outlet on FM wouldn't work anywhere. Some CBS sports stations could air CBS SR overnights while airing live and local sports talk the rest of the day. :)

Play-by-play contracts tend to be multi-year deals. A new FM sports station might have 3-5 years of treading water before they had a chance to bid...with no guarantee they'd win...on broadcast rights for a major local sports team.
