Who will be the first in LA to do HD Radio Simulcasts?

It's happening in Chicago with WUSN AND WMJK and rumored to in NYC with WCBS-FM. Will Infinity get in the game here? A KROQ II, KRTH-II or a 2nd sub channel from 94.7, 97.1, or 93.1? And how about HBC or SBS? Might be a great opportunity to further explore spanish format ninches.

Mabye KM will get his classic modern rock station finally:)
______________

I can see KM programming in L.A. He knows his Modern Rock New Wave 80's Oldies. I also believe contrary to his ‘Iron Fist’ of Moderating, he would re create Fun & Excitement back on the Radio with his unique programming approach. One could only wish!

Except nobody but ten people will be listening because HD radio is not selling well.

Thats because HD radio will have to be promoted first! But that will change in the future and will most likely be remembered as to little too late. But you never know...I will be buying an HD radio in the near future "IF" and "When" a
station in the Sacramento or bay area comes on using the new signal.

Re: Wouldn’t that be Ironic? He is Tragically Hip you know!

I think it would be great to let KM program that concept on 103.1 and see how he fairs against Jack and Kroq.

There is a market.

Re: Wouldn’t that be Ironic? He is Tragically Hip you know!

It's a chicken and egg scenario. What incentive is there to buy an HD radio if theres no content?

The early days of television is our lesson. Wrestling matches didn't sell TV's but when Milton Berle came on, he did more to sell TVs than anything else. Content needs to be compelling.

Will you sit your HD radio next to the one with AM stereo? :)

Not selling well? Have you tried to buy one?

The manufacturers need to bring up the output of the units.

Thanks for the compliments, guys (except for the "Iron Fist" crack).

I probably have every valid song for such a format in my personal library!

That's not really a simulcast. It's treated as two stations on one carrier.

TV is already doing it on HDTV; up to five stations on one freq.
______________

Ya AM was a FLOP! I have one and you can't tell the difference. Is HD like AM stereo? If so, I won't be listening. A RIPOFF!!!

HD Radio Multicasts

> Whats the heck is HD Radio?

It's the new sliced-bread for broadcast radio. Pure energy, digitally relayed to your radio. The current system, analog, will be phased out (time table unknown).
HDRadio (the HD does not mean anything; most consumers speculate it is high def radio) is part of IBOC -- In Band, On Channel, digital service. AM radio can sound like FM; and FM is CD quality. FM can also deliver three channels. The main, and one other programming; and one for data.

Infinity is on the record and has started multi-casting HDRadio in Chi-cago, and promises to do the same in New York. It is believe that Infinity will do the same in la LA -- and possibly Sandy Eggo.

Of course, this new broadcast requires a special HDRadio; and they start at about $200 - $300.

Consider doing a Google search on HDRadio and/or IBOC.

I hope that helps, please resume normal broadcasting. Because the moderators demand it:

KKGO on KMZT: Who will be the first in LA to do HD Radio Simulcasts?

Saul Levine wins this award. The new KKGO "Unforgettable 1260 and 540" will also be broadcast on KMZT 105.1 FM's digital channel 2.
True, KKGO is over the air (AM that is), but it is the first use of HD channel 2 here in LA that I know of.

Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)

Exactly what HD Radio Needs

Uhh.duh. How many radios are available right now...why buy radios without the programming? Its a technology in its infancy.

Classic modern rock makes or any format currently unavailable on existing analog radio is exactly what HD needs to sell radios. Why would anyone invest in a new (high-dollar, at least at this point) radio if all they can hear is the same stuff they're getting right now?

Remember the early days of FM..it was classical, beautiful music - all sorts of alternatave (ala Pacifica, etc.) and eventually free-form AOR. "Stuff" you couldn't get on AM. When receiver penetration finally took hold, then you saw the mainstream formats beginning to use the technology. But its going to take unique programming currently unavailable to help kick HD into high gear.

The advantage here - with stations using multiple channels of programming on one frequency - is that they can continue to offer their analog mainstream formsts at the same time - a "bonus" for those buying the new radios.

I seriously doubt much of the mainstream will care about the quality. This is a general public that now accepts MP3 as high quality audio...

Rant mode off...

Re: HD Radio Multicasts

Will the broadcast signal still behave the same way as an AM or FM signal?
with AM getting bounce?

I also understand that the signal will be stronger where there is even a fuzzy signal now.

This to me will save terrestrial radio. There will be new programming and features for listeners and new revenue streams for owners, while maintaining a local edge.

Yes, the only thing changed is the addition of the digital programming

not entirely true, the signal will have the same coverage as now; the FCC will not increase (nor decrease) present power. Meaning, KKGO will have the same coverage.

It could, or it could be just like AM Stereo ... a lot of fluff, but no fold.
______________

Bonneville might charge for HD Radio

Bonneville radio is floating an idea to charge $1 a month for HD channel in the SF Bay Area. Would you pay?
