Who Will Replace Gary LaPierre at WBZ Radio?

C

Casablanca

Will WBZ Radio replace retiring Gary LaPierre, WBZ Radio's New Director and Newscaster, from within or from without?

Who are the likely candidates from both?

Did Gary get a promotion? Last I heard, Peter Casey was WBZ's ND.

I still think the perfect fit would be Pat Carroll. She's morning anchor at WCBS Newsradio, but spent several years at the old WEEI News Radio 590, and is a Rhode Islander by birth.

In the interest of full disclosure, she's also my ex-wife. But I honestly don't know if she'd take the job. I think if 'BZ ponied up some big bucks it could happen...

WCBS and WBZ have the same corporate parent. I don't think CBS Radio is going to get into a bidding war with itself. . ;D

I agree, though, your ex-wife would sound great in Boston.

Ouch !

My choice is Rod Fritz. Currently News Director at WRKO and morning newsman, Rod has the background and life experience to be an excellent successor to Gary.

I have to agree with you there, Casablanca; Fritz would be an excellent choice. Having worked and played (easy campers: I'm talking golf and poker ;))with him, I think Rod is a great guy and a real pro... And he's paid his dues in spades.

Not sure whether age discrimination might play a role in his chances. I hope not.

This is radio...Rod has the perfect face for radio... ;)
As I used to tell my old great friend J.W., "Can you spell Mike Wallace?" Rod is decades younger and has a full successful run ahead of him. What a loss it would be if chronology played a part in a radio hiring. Of course, that never happens does it

There are several voices I wouldn't mind hearing. I think the smart thing would be to put Deb Lawler in the top and bottom of the hour slots. Then, for the :18 and :48 slots I'd consider the following:

Laurie Kirby (she's already filling in and there are so many male voices doing sports, weather, and traffic).
Jordan Rich (he'd sound great, he's so conversational...but he has a full-time voice over job)
Jay McQuaid (but it would be tough to talk him out of BC/BS)

My two cents.

Dave

I'd like to hear them bring in someone totally new to Boston. An established newsman or newswoman, but someone most of us haven't heard before.

I don't agree with that one. I think that position calls for an experienced market veteran who has lived and worked in Boston, and knows Boston. I'd agree with the suggestion for Rod Fritz.

Sure, having someone who knows the region well is always a plus. But let's use the television example for a moment -- stations constantly bring in people from out of town, figuring they'll catch on to the local scene. Same thing could be done on radio, although Boston does tend to be quite provincial.

I wouldn't be opposed to a voice like Rod Fritz, but I think the changes at BZ are a real opportunity to reach out to the audience who will carry Boston's oldest broadcast station for the next number of years. To me, that means bringing in a younger voice. Jay McQuaide would have fit the bill perfectly, but as has been mentioned earlier, he's over at Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and I don't think he's looking back.

:p

Actually...I'd like to cast a vote for Deb Lawler. She's a pro...and the Boston market knows her!

I guess BCBS is paying Jay McQuade a megafortune not to leave?

But JAY and DEB would make a great team.

I'm sick about LaPierre leaving 'BZ... what a pro! I'd have to agree about Deb Lawler though. She's solid.

But she's already on in AM drive...maybe they'll move her to lead position when Gary leaves?
