Who Won't Make It Thru 2011?

I'll put up one and let you guys add.

WRXP 101.9

Disagree. Unless it's sold, then all bets are off.

Emmis supposedly wants $100MM for WRXP. IMHO, I don't think they'll get it in this market. They might have to LMA with ESPN. :)

WWPR FM Power 105.1

Why? Power 105.1 is serving its purpose for CC, which is to fragment Hot 97's audience enough to keep Lite-FM in 1st place.

What's CC going to put on 105.1? Rush Radio? That won't get a bigger number than Power gets currently. If it did happen, Hot 97 would be the big winner. :)

I don't care who goes away, but we need to get a country station on the air in NYC next year. Hopefully the WKMK ratings will continue to rise and wake up station owners that modern country is a viable format. There is way too much overlap in NY radio. A lot of the same songs are heard on these groups of stations:

92.3/103.5/100.3
97.1/105.1
98.7/107.5
95.5/102.7/106.7
101.9/104.3

I already bought my tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert at the Meadowlands next August. Hopefully we can have a country station in the area by then.

Let's make a bet: Which of the following will happen in 2011: a country station will sign on in New York City just in time for the Kenny Chesney concert, or an FM station will take the ESPN Radio format/programming just in time for the Jets 2011 season? (Or both? Or neither?)

I think it's time someone took a chance on country. Maybe CBS, because while Now and Fresh aren't exactly tanking, they're not making much of a dent in their competition's ratings. They could probably get similar numbers with country, while filling a void in the market.

Another option would be Emmis on 101.9, if they don't plan on selling. Because as much as I would love to think that a modern rock format could work in NYC, things seem pretty hopeless with RXP right now.

As for the idea of Power flipping, this isn't 2002. While Hot 97 would undoubtedly get a significant boost from the flip, I don't think it would be enough to knock down Lite or even Z. Still, I'd bet against anything happening on 105.1.

If Power flipped we could see Now FM benefit some from that as their format is CHR but favoring Rhythmic to not cross with Fresh. Also Hot 97 would rank higher. Would help out 92.3 I believe.

Perhaps WFAS 103.9 may be sold next year, as Cumulus has authorization to move their tower from Hartsdale to the same site in the Bronx as WFUV's.
Maybe country could work on WFAS, if/when their tower new tower is is built. The signal would not cover the entire market, but would reach a good chunk of it. And it should cost way less than one of New York's class B stations. Perhaps a new owner would take a chance and cover this major format hole.
But realistically, it may be more likely that it gets sold to a religious broadcaster, as was WCTZ 96.7 a few months ago.

I read that the new WFAS tower is already built and they have been running tests on it. I have not heard anything about when the switchover will take place.

How about WFME 94.7 since according to Harold Camping judgement day is 5/21/11 ;D

Do they have any 2nd or 3rd adjacent shrtspacing issues keeping them from going on ESB as a full B, non-directional?

I know there is 94.7 WMAS in Springfield, MA. Their signal gets as far south as New Haven county. I don't know if that is considered short spacing though. And there is another 94.7 in Delaware/South Jersey.

Is the 2nd adjacent at 94.3 on Long Island an issue?

I'll go with the latter, ESPN on FM in time for the 2011 Jets' season. There's going to be a sports station on FM in NY eventually and WEPN needs to get there ASAP. 'FAN with its 50 kW blaster doesn't have to rush to FM, though a future simulcast is a possibility.

The Mets and Yankees deals with CBS will expire at the end of the 2011 baseball season. WEPN on FM would offer an attractive option for one of them. :)

Also 94.5 near Trenton. :)
