Who would staff your all-star OKC / Tulsa dream station?

This is my bright idea, so I'll get the ball rolling:

I don't know the OKC market well enough, but for a Tulsa station staffed from those already here, I'd get:

Mel Meyers - A legendary morning man, he's even made middays a fun show!

Andy Barber - Is there a bad shift for this guy? A funny, funny man.

Dave Michaels - Afternoons are easier with Wavy Davy on the radio.

Matt Bradley - The youngest guy on my "short list," he's a riot who could tear this town apart if let loose on the air.

Chuck Stevens - A legendary jock to those of us who grew up listening to him on K-107 in the 80s; what a smooth set of pipes!

Carly Rush - I don't feel like I've heard "her" for years, maybe going back to her overnight days at K-107; she's really funny! And a good jock to boot.

Rick Couri - Sports, co-host... is there anything this guy can't do? Quick, quick wit & always easy going & friendly.

John Filbeck - He's the swiss army knife in his employer's arsenal: traffic, storm chasing, award-winning production, live sports events... if John can't do it, it can't be done.

Billy Parker - OK, this would depend a bit on the format... but I wonder if he wouldn't sound just as friendly and approachable on formats besides country, too?

Ken Staley - The name least likely to be recognized on this list, he's hidden out as PD / sales manager of AM 970 KCFO for dozens of years... a smooth voice, an ultra-dry sense of humor, & an excellent working knowledge of the roots of rock n roll make him the perfect choice for middays or a specialty oldies show.

ME - Duh... I'd love to be able to even work weekends / overnights at such a station!

If I could "resurrect" people who have left the biz, my list would include:

John Erling - The morning man Tulsa loved to hate, he should have continued to have the freedom to do what he did best in his later years on the air.

John Dukree - Not that I blame him... but he was my favorite voice on Tulsa radio, a newsman of supreme integrity and the best security blanket you could have when severe weather passed through the area.

Larry Scott - Not that skilled in the mechanics of the radio, he radiated "legend" and had great stories for every song he played... he felt like he was talking right to you and kept you informed of weather & news, too, when he did the Interstate Road Show overnights on KVOO-AM 1170.

Charlie Spears - Used to do Sonlight on KMOD, still at TU as far as I know, just not doing the radio thing right now... super-smooth voice, great, personable personality (can you call a personality personable?), friendly, and very knowledgeable about multiple genres of music.

If I could bring them back from from other towns:

Gary Thomson - A voice of gold, a heart of gold, a golden sense of humor... hm, maybe I just want the gold? ;)

Duncan Payden - Funny, funny guy who did killer nights on a couple of Tulsa CHRs.

Rob Hough - An import from Missouri, he's moved back & taken his laid-back style, friendly demeanor, & great pipes with him.

Scooter B Seagraves - Who WOULDN'T bring this guy back???

I am CERTAIN I am forgetting people (who will read this and be angry at me) and this list by no means lists all of the really, really talented people on the air in Tulsa... all this represents is MY "dream team," and chances are it would vary based on what format I was programming, etc., including some I haven't listed here and dropping some I have.

I also think my "all star" list would require everybody work two-hour shifts. ;D

O.K., your turn: who would make up YOUR "dream staff?" Who's the "best" to you?

My Dream Team Air Staff Lineup is as follows:

6A-9A Jerry Vaughn Funniest morning guy I ever heard.
9A-noon Mel Meyers wide open personality, no holds barred
Noon-3p Andy Barber wide open personality, no holds barred
3p-6p Scooter Seagraves wide open personality, no holds barred
6p-9p Dave Michaels, wide open, kickass crazy, no holds barred
9p-midnight Bo Chase, wide open, kickass, off the chart insane
midnight-5:30A Matt Bradley, wide open, unbridled, no retraints, paid six figures, no holds barred.
Weekend lineup would include Charlie Derek, Jeff Peters, Jim Jerrels, Bob Brauer, Jennifer Wagoner and Larry Lujack. The rest of you can kiss my ass.

I would also put Kevin Seal in a daypart somewhere and Paul Langston would be the PD. I of course would be the GM and would spend the day telling people to kiss my ass.

Six figures Bob? Overnight Bob? I'd be an angry rich man. If there's a playlist, I'm throwing it out after 2am. Langston would never get up to check on me anyway. ;)

I'm going to go look up the word "unbridled" now.

Edit: Unbridled = ungoverned rage Great, Bob thinks I'm going to restart the race riots.

Re: Dream Team Station Line-up-
Tis true my brothers & sisters in broadcasting, there are so many talented personalities that the air shifts could only be 15 minutes long. Name them all and bring'em back. In my memory they are all great. I wouldn't leave anybody out. They all had something unique to bring to the airwaves. Truth is, I wish I could have worked with everyone of them. I almost did! But the ride came to a complete stop and I got off. Now I listen for enjoyment. While I will always be critical of todays Tulsa radio, it far outshines many a major and like sized markets by a billion watts! I love Tulsa and the broadcsting people in it, be it radio or televison.
As for Matt Bradley, Matt you would be great on any morning show in America. With so many guys and gals who would be great in the morning, I'd have to have a different morning personality every morning. We'd have to rotate all of you every 14 days.
No matter what happens, keep the dream alive.

FYI.... Jerry Vaughn died a few years ago. What a great talent.

Man, NightAire...I'm so offended. I can't believe you gave me the shaft!!! You even picked Gary Thompson over me...that's just down right cruel. ;D

Jack,

Trust me... I just got reamed by a couple of co-workers a couple of minutes ago for the exact same thing. (They're VERY talented and would be WONDERFUL on my dreamstaff, if they're reading this.) :D

It's also worth mentioning that Gary is my wife's favorite air personality... besides me, she's always quick to remind me, when I give her the "hurt puppy" look.

...Didn't you tell me I couldn't afford you, anyway? ;)

P.S. - I just got a nice note from myself, informing me that my interest in my all-star station was appreciated, but unfortunately I was looking at going another direction, and so while my tape and resume will be kept on file, my services will not be needed at this time. :'(

Oh, well... can't even work at my own station...

Night,

I'm honored and humbled to be included, Sir. I loved listening to you doing news on KRMG when we were in the market. And there are few as good at severe weather coverage as you.

The first time I ever heard you was on Z-104.5 circa 1989. I was a ripe old age of 14 mowing lawns for pizza cash. I remember thinking "wow...I'll bet I could be a DJ too if I had a last name as violent as yours. ;) To me at that point in life, being able to jock the mighty "Z" and get airchecks from Mel would've been a wet dream. You'll always be a winner in my eyes (among other reasons) simply because you are one of the names that passed through the Z.

I'll second your nomination of Ken Staley. What a great guy. He's one of those GM's that goes quietly about his business doing good for people and expecting nothing in return.

Jack! I miss ya, brother. You lucky dog. Working for a network like Way FM is a score. Quit whining and enjoy having "arrived" in the CCM format. ;)

Gary,

How could I stay offended with you. Come here & give me a BIG HUGE! Wait...get your hands off my butt. Sheesh...some things never change!!!! ;D

Night,

You're right...I did say that. ::) I'm full of hot air...truth is...I'm cheap!!! At least that's what I've been told. ;)

All-star teams need to have more than everyday position players and pitchers....

We're missing a PRODUCTION DIRECTOR so this station would have the best commercials...

Too bad they won't know...but SCOTT YATES and RIC ALAN WEST are a terrific 1-2 punch...they can use a blade AND a mouse!!

How about Sales and GM nominations? The names of Hubby, Carlson and Whitaker come to mind first. I'm talkin' people who really hustled and almost ALWAYS got the order! I know I've left out a bunch!

Vivian Steele for all time Promotions Director...when it comes to IDEAS and EXECUTION and VISIBILITY. (Biased, but in favor of GREAT!)

Tulsa Dream Team---Wow, what a great question.

6-9 AM ---I'd go with McCarthy for mornings. We were very funny in our day at KAKC (just ask us)
Followed by Erling (he has bought me lunch since I left raido---more than Mike has done) ..if they are busy then Coop would be my choice... Couri would need to be in the morning mix as well with sports.

9-12 NOON -- Mel .... or Charlie Derek

12-3PM --- Wavy... Andy Barber...or... Matt Bradley

3-6PM--- Only one choice--- Scotter B.

6-9PM--- Bob O'Shea (if he isn't too busy being the G-M).... or Dandy Don Bishop

9-12Mid--Chuck Stevens

Overnight---Carly Rush

Of course--- I'd want a huge news department---- with Dowdell is charge. (Just to make everyone's life interesting)

As for G-M..... they just get in the way.

Coop & John-
Amen Bro Bob. Sick Al and Scotty would definitely have to be there along with all the great sales people.
Bro John, you've put me in there with some pretty heavy company. I would be proud to have that 6p-9p slot following the Great Scooter B. Maybe when we all get to the other side The GM will let us have the Heavenly Rockin' 97.

O'Shea

The question is though, would there be pledge drives for Heaven 97 in the afterlife? :D

Praise the LORD and pass the plate! Hallelujah! We just got a 1000 dollar pledge! Praise the LORD! Now we can build even a bigger tower of POWA!! Thank you Jeeeeeezuuusss!

;D

Hey, Durk: thanks for the promo mention...24 more this week and you might get a buy!!

ALSO..when you and Mc Carthy worked together...did he ever ask you if you wanted to look great naked?

Holy back to the board, Batdude! No wonder my mouse's ears have been burning while I was catching up on my popcorn jones. Thanks to you who put me in here in any shift. Someone said "have to be two hours." Hell, to fit in with these guys, I'd have to do two SONGS ... and spend two days prepping for what I'd put between 'em, just to keep from getting spliced out.
Think we should give some consideration--like when Billy Parker was included--to formats outside "top 40," whatever it's being called in each jock's era. Guys like Phil & Brent on KMOD; Milt Haynes, Larry Strain, Jim Hartz, Lynn Higbee, Doc Hull, Johnny Chick, and Marvin McCullough on KRMG; Larry (Thomlinson) Thomas from early KRAV, only one back then to top KRMG's Johnny Martin in a book; and Dick "Irving" Schmitz from early KAKC and Roger Borden from slightly later KAKC, in that world's greatest production studio.
Oh yeah...and then there's the OTHER end of the the Turner Turnpike, too.
Are you sure a li'l ole state that's bumper-stickered as "OK" really had room and time for all THAT much talent? Maybe you'd better make my part ONE very quick backsell.
And BTW, cooptulsa: don't know about on the air...but be careful about doing a beard/long-hair/denim jacket & jeans appearance with the Morning Mouth, in a slightly cosmic condition, at a certain very wealthy private school's fashion show ... having to feed him the line "and how do you like YOUR ladies, Mike?" ... to fear for your LIFE when he calmly replied, "nek-kid." (Thought I was going to be one of the guys Cosby mentioned in his jumping off a seesaw bit, who never had the chance to have a deep voice. ::) ) Oops, upon further review: turned out like that for me anyhow.
Scooter B.
