Wholly Crap 2

Scanning the radio dial this afternoon and noticed a few noticible changes.....

Just heard John Dillon doing afternoons on KKTX. How long has he been doing afternoons in Tyler?

Also noticed Brandon Michael former Bull afternoon guy doing afternoons now on KYKX. Is Joey T gone, or is Brandon just filling in?

KISX now has a jock on afternoons. Most of last week when the flip happened they were just tracking music. I was afraid it was going to turn into another KVEE with only music for 6 months!

Anyone else notice any changes around the radio dial in East Texas?

Apparently, Joey T must be gone. There's no mention of him now in the "Air Staff" section of KYKX's website.

BTW...I can't decide if your "wholly crap" is to be taken literally or if you're meaning "holy crap". Not flaming...just looking for clarification. :)<P ID="signature">______________

As in holy crap!

BTW - another thing I noticed this afternoon is that Lucky Larry from the old KISS is now on CC's Mix doing afternoons.

Dillon is probably VTing from Dallas.
I think he is back at KZPS for nights.

Heard KDOK play ZZ Top's "Tush" one morning this week. The next song was one of the pre-disco Bee Gees songs, "I Started A Joke" (I think). The line between oldies and classic rock seem to be blurring.

I like KDOK, but, IMHO, they can leave ZZ Top to 96X.

As much as we (us older guys) hate to admit it, "Tush" is an "Oldie" and in Texas, some stations would probably put it in a "Power Gold" rotation.

"Tush" will be 31 years old this summer.

"Tush" and most of ZZ Top's 70's albums were recorded at Robin Hood Studios in Tyler, one of the most legendary recording studios in the state, and still operating today.

The Five Americans "Western Union", John Fred's "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)" and The Uniques "All These Things" were recorded there.

A few months ago I heard KDOK play "Yours Is No Disgrace" by Yes.

Well...now that song may be a little more "Classic Rock" than "Oldie" but something that did get...at least some Top 40 airplay...like "Your Move" might be permissible along with more established songs like "Long Distance Runaround" and "Roundabout."

I dont even hear "Long Distance Runaround" much on Classic Rock station (96-X and 98 Rocks) anymore. I do remember long long ago I found an edited single version of it at my college radio station.

I also remember playing a drastically chopped up 45 Atlantic promo of "Roundabout" years later, which sounded horrible with all the edits to cram it under 3 mins.

A year or two ago KDOK had a 80's flashback on fridays...where they played things like the Fixx's "One thing leads to Another". One of the things a locally owned and programmed oldies station can toss in once in awhile.

I knew about "Judy in Disguise" but not ZZ Top.
They were recorded in Tyler?

Yep...most of thier 70's London Records albums (except for the live tracks on "Fandango!") were recorded there up to the "Deguello" album. Billy Gibbons said Tyler was such a dull town they had to get work done.

With the "El Loco" album ZZ Top started using Ardent Studios in Memphis, and most of their monster selling Warner Brothers albums like "Eliminator" were recorded there. But I think the simple stuff they recorded in Tyler sounds so much better.

Amazing a teenager in the 60's could build a studio behind his parents house and score national hits!
