Whooooo.... CBS!

If I were to be on a hispanic TV program, do you think they would use the anglicized pronunciation of my name? I highly doubt it.

Nothing against her. She is good, and speaks good ol' American English. She's probably from NYC or Miami. But I don't recall Maggie Rodriguez (despite her name) ever flaunting her heritage.

Thank you for this part of the comment!! Because it drives me CRAZY when Univision and Telemundo call New York "Nueva York" and North Carolina "Carolina del Norte" and (my personal favorite) the New England Patriots "las patriotas de Nueva Inglaterra". They also refer to the NY Giants as "los gigantes de Nueva York" and the Red Sox as "las medias rojas". Not to mention that (as an example) Chicago's UNI and TEL outlets will constantly lead sports with Mexican league soccer, often totally ignoring local teams such as the Bears and the Bulls. If there isn't enough time after discussing Monterrey's soccer club at length, then the Bears playoff game is ignored. Talk about acting as a discouragement for those who should be assimilating! The only thing they don't do is literally translate people's names into Spanish.

When you travel to certain countries, you sometimes find English language radio stations and/or newspapers in those markets. One I'll discuss is Costa Rica, which has a number of English language news sources. They don't refer to San Jose as "Saint Joseph" or Puntarenas as "Sand Point" or change the names of sporting teams. No, they go straight with them. Yes, when you are in English language countries, we see many place names in other languages changed - but not when you're actually in that country. In Puerto Rico, English media don't convert Spanish names into English, for example (and yes, PR is a US Commonwealth). Yet all of the Spanish language media here translate common place names into Spanish. They translate almost everything into Spanish.

Furthermore, they are incredibly biased (so hard left that Chris Matthews is a Bircher by comparison) and they appear to show no interest in traditional American cultural happenings. It's all about Mexico on most of these channels. And it's sickening, especially if you can actually understand what is being said and implied. As propaganda does, these outlets give the Spanish speaking audience a distorted view of our country, political system, laws and culture. It is frustrating to watch.

Why not let Katie Couric co-anchor the morning show? I'm sure she'd be a big draw in that timeslot, and it would be very interesting seeing her go up against the Today show.
...that's what they thought with Bryant Gumbel, too. Look where that wound up. At least Couric was able to hold her own on NBC the morning of 9/11, while Gumbel displayed utter incompetence on CBS...

CBS has a new morning team.... same garbage show, same liberal spin crap...
What was it specifically that they had a 'crappy liberal spin' on?
More of a PC-spin on it. They have their "token" hispanic woman on there, and they (her cohosts) insist on using the "hispanized" pronunciation of her name ("Mottisol"). If I were to be on a hispanic TV program, do you think they would use the anglicized pronunciation of my name? I highly doubt it.

So the show is a failure because a Latina woman on the show has her name pronounced incorrectly.

Captain obvious here--this thread was a complete waste of time and keystrokes.

You asked the question, and then you didn't like the answer.

*sigh* ::)

No, I asked the question and someone stupified its parameters. It went from an examination of 'liberal spin' to PC-or-not-PC pronunciation. I'd still like to know a specific example of liberal bias in their reporting, or if the OP was just pulling things out of thin air.

"Stupified its parameters"? Maybe you pulled that one out of thin air. I can't comment on the content of the show. I don't watch it enough to comment on it. But when anglo announcers go out of their way to call her "Mottisol," I tune out! Enough of the P.C. b.s.!

And yet you keep replying to it!

Oh the horror, people pronounce a name in a way the official old white dudes guidebook (TM) doesn't call for. Accck, it's PC. Not someone choosing what they want to be called (you know, that cherished free speech thing)...no, now it's some comment on what's allegedly American or not, as if there's one single way that meets the definition of "American."

:D :D :D :D :D

To me, the whole pronunciation of the names with their ethnic accents thing is kind of verbally jarring [as well as being p.c].
You get into a pattern hearing them talk about the dancing shows, the latest celebrity gossip, and all that weighty stuff with a regulated, homogenized accent.
Then "now back to Mottisol" or "over to Seamus McGillicuddy de Castronuevas" or whatever the accent they throw in, it just makes it sound like someone's trying out for voiceover work on The Simpsons or something. It's like if they dropped "f'shizzle" in there, you have to stop and think extra about what they were meaning to say.

...a lot of y'all are coming off as like those fools in the '60s who found the name Muhammad Ali too big a mouthful to say and continued calling the man Cassius Clay. It's complaint for the sake of complaint. Just have enough respect to call the man or woman what (s)he wants to be called and move on. Sheesh!...

My 2 cents has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. My question is why do all 3 networks feel they have to do the same type of show at the same time? At least there was a time when CBS was doing something completely different.

In this day of PBS, the cartoon networks, and DVD's the kids shows aren't as important as they once were but it seems like the networks could do something different.

How many people still watch morning TV anyway? Sure we did it years ago but that was a long time ago when TV was still relatively new.

Millions enough people watch to make it a big profit center. And they all three do the same things at other times as well...like, um, prime time, when you easily can often find three dramas at the same time, for one example. They do morning news because it works.

Good point. Ratings seem to matter less and less these days, as long as the programs are making

money.

Good point. The San Francisco market has 5 competing morning news programs - the 3 major networks, a local program on the Fox affiliate, and another on an indy station. All of them seem to be surviving.

Personally, I never developed the morning TV habit. NPR and the Internet are just fine for me in the AM.

I guess you don't want to watch a "news" show that's three hours old either. ::)
(The 7 AM quarter hour is sometimes updated for the left coast, but still...)

All of the reports indicate that morning television is the fastest growing timeslot in the day. Hence, we have the local news starting as early as "o'dark thirty" (that would be 4:30am). As for the network newscasts, they are still paying the newscasters quite a bit. Honestly, though, I only watch "Today" if there is some sort of breaking news. Otherwise, I'm watching the local newscasts here in Phoenix.

Apparently, I think such usage is accepted terminology among Hispanics, not just in the media.

Though of course, in the francophone media in Canada, they call New England "Nouvelle-Angleterre" and North Carolina "Caroline du Nord", but they call New York "New York".

Hey CBS! Hire a bulldozer and push this morning show into a big ditch and then cover it up. Park the tractor on top when you are done.

How about changing the channel if you don't like it that much. ;)
Yeah - Like to FOX NEWS for instance (You DO have CABLE, do you Skippy?)

Cheers :D

Yeah, well -that's a given on the 'left' coast. My favorite source for early news (Morning Edition on NPR is 3 hours old, too - though they do run it live here for those few people who are up at 4:00 AM.

Come to think of it, we actually had people make fun of the President because he dared pronounce 'Pakistan' in its traditional phonetic pronunciation on campaign trail.

Some people deserve to have their feelings hurt.
