Oh the horror, people pronounce a name in a way the official old white dudes guidebook (TM) doesn't call for. Accck, it's PC. Not someone choosing what they want to be called (you know, that cherished free speech thing)...no, now it's some comment on what's allegedly American or not, as if there's one single way that meets the definition of "American."

Come to think of it, we actually had people make fun of the President because he dared pronounce 'Pakistan' in its traditional phonetic pronunciation on campaign trail.

Some people deserve to have their feelings hurt.

Our great former Governator - Arnold Schwaranegger - used to catch hell because he pronounced California "Call-e-for-nee-yah", but technically that's also the proper pronunciation, rather than the typical 3 syllable "Cahl-ee-for-nya."

My father pronounced it that way, as did the city's infamous Mayor Sam Yorty (60s and early 70s). But I believe the correct (Spanish) pronunciation for Los Angeles is neither J or hard-G, but "Los Ann-hell-ais"..."h" sound.

I found this amusing snippet online: 'During the 1920s and 1930s, the Los Angeles Times vigorously defended the Spanish pronunciation and printed directly below its editorial page masthead, “LOS ANGELES (Loce Ahng hail ais).” When the U.S. Geographic Board recognized the anglicized version in 1934, the Times was outraged, declaring that the pronunciation made the city “sound like some brand of fruit preserve.” '

...Wikipedia lists the original Spanish as having a hard-G, followed by the gutteral ch as in "Channukah" or "Loch." And remember what Chet Huntley used to say -- if you want to determine the truth through the Los Angeles Times, the key is to disregard the words they print. ;D ...

...BTW, The Real Don Steele would pronounce "Los Angeles" with the hard-G during some weathercasts on KHJ in the '60s; perhaps that was a nod to the utility announcers KHJ had in the '30s that would also pronounce it that way when making legal IDs (the aircheck that survives of the Joe Louis-Jack Sharkey boxing match has that twice)...
