Whoopi

wonder if Whoopi will appear with Stern on Sirius too? (keep me informed) I don't own XM or Sirius. I'm just not into cutting edge radio I suppose!
 
whoopi reads recipes, kvetches, praises, does stand up and like issac hayes, will eventually peter out after the star factor burns. good idea, but not great execution. what do a lite ac in chicago, a dance-chr in ny and a smooth jazz station in la have in common....they'll all be looking for new morning shows in 6 months. sorry...sometimes honesty is a hard pill to swallow...
 
well non radio people dont seem to have too good of a track record in genral these days so i'll give it 6 mounths before (yet) another change happens
 
Okay, someone is talking to the morning crew of Wretch up with Whoopie, because they do sound a bit better. At least, she's not fighting Cubby for some kind of control. She has got to give up menapause, recipes, and suntan lotion though. It will be death for her if she is going to keep doing content like that. The real problem I think for this station is the direction of their music. Are they AC or something else but not specific? It is definitely a mess. They suddenly started doing more songs an hour (and I don't blame them) this week. Are they trying to do talk radio or is this a music station? And what is the demographic they are shooting for because I'm not sure these old guys that keep calling in are what they were expecting. Somebody is hitting that station with the 'bad radio stick'. I guess I can listen for another week to see if they get better.

Her show may not be good, but that right there is redemption! It takes balls to make a live in studio appearance on the show that is ripping yours apart!
 
Remember that she's a stand up comic and knows that the best way to confront a heckler is to go right after them.

The demos that I believe this show is supposed to be geared to is women in their 20's to mid 40's.

I listened this morning, and all I can say is... Ouch! I have heard better people on my college radio station than I did this morning. She sounded especially confused at the end of the show like she had more time than she thought or something.

Gave it a long listen this morning. Who thought this was a good idea? Awful. She sounds drunk. What is the over/under? Did someone say 6 months? I will take the under please.
 
With all due respect, it is extremly hard for a non-radio person to really make it - especially entering at the top! Those who pay their dues, learn the craft, and to respect the listener have much more success. The movie stars, standups, and politicians who try to do radio fail about 95% of the time! Why? Because it is just a holding pattern until the next movie comes along!
 
The women in our office have been laughing along with her and shouting out responses for the last 7 days... As rough around the edges we in programming think this may be, average people just hear someone they know and adore and she's being herself... so we'll see how it flies!
 
Great point, Justin. My concern about Whoopi and all the others who try radio is that if they are succssful, and develop a following - what happens when the next movie or TV deal comes along? Are they genuinely interested in being radio stars - or is it a holding pattern?
 
Okay, week three and she sounds a smidgen better but it is my opinion that it's like she's going into the black murky water of redundency already... And to be honest, she just doesn't sound sincere when she deals with real people on the phone. Of course, phone plants are a little different because you can tell it's a set up... and there are many.

Someone mentioned the office of women laughing, enjoying themselves... I just don't believe it. Sounds like a contrived idea because I've been hearing just the opposite from people, especially women. She's cleary hitting some kind of gate with men but her topics are all targeting housewives- very strange isn't it?

If you want to research the usual history of celebrity hosts just look at LA radio. 18 out of 20 will usually give it up or are released within six months of initial airing. It is my very real opinion this is how long Whoopi will be around... but she may just surprise us. Of course when you throw away millions on an idea you don't give it up easily. The real problem is that Whoopi is 50 and that is not a promising supposition when launching a new show. It's just got sticky cobwebs written all over it.

Unfortunately, this is the sad state of terrestrial radio today. There is a severe lack of confidence in today's up-and-coming talent and so the very impatient execs running low level ideas like "Let's get so and so who is doing nothing now!" creates the very desperate situation of "We just wasted all our money on yet another stupid idea let's put in something easy to fund and expect the best." And so you turn on the radio and it sounds exhausted and under funded. So I guess I have to say thanks to all the Whoopis and bottom scraping execs who have one idea per year. I think they need to develop better radio education in colleges. Do they even have higher level courses in running stations or is it all basic communications classes?

However, I promise to remain open and report honestly after this show progresses but I really would rather listen to something else.

I've been trying hard to hear the upside of Whoopi, and I think it's a train wreck. I really want to like the show because Whoopi is... well, Whoopi, and I've loved Cubby for a long time, but I still find myself wandring over to Scott & Todd.

However, I admit that my opinion is just one guy speaking.

That being said, the quote above is absolutely, by far, and without question, the most intelligent, thoughtful, and well-written statement I've seen on this board in months.

Avidlistener is now on my true hero list.... A good writer with something to say.

By the way, I listened to her first show about two weeks ago before it got syndicated, but it was only on New York City for a couple of weeks before it went national. I listened to it for 4 hours and it was great. The other day, I listened to a podcast called "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Pod" that Aaron Wallace thanked me for allowing to play Whoopi's first show on the air on WKTU in New York City. I should give Aaron credit for that one that he is a Whoopi Goldberg fan. He played that aircheck of the first four hours on the air. I should give a big shout out to Aaron Wallace, because he is hosting "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Pod" where he was talking about Whoopi Goldberg. I should thank him for that.

You might hear me mentioned my username because he made a referenced to "Musicradio WABC" when it was a top 40 radio station in New York City from 1961 until 1982. That's where I got my username from.

Sounds like everything else out there today for CHR. Obnoxios digital flanging on vocals Why? Jingle that sound like there skipping all the way through (for effect) Same digital harshness and the muscic, just more synthesized crap.

And who is the lame emotionless woman doing the demo?

Man where is the professionalism today????
 
That's right, Tookiebird, keep it real. Sometimes I read the replies to topics and think "This person must be off his rocker! Are they hearing the same radio I am?" Turned her on again this morning and i swear she didn't even hear the person on the phone. Like acting in front of a blue screen... more like smacting.
