WHO'S DOING THE BEST WEATHER COVERAGE?

OK the news talk stations have regular critics on this board but it's at times like this we see who has the commitment, resources and strength. Who blows out spots and dumps network, and who has the staff delivering the goods.
All the cliche's of promo hype are tested with true credibility to deliver now. So, who delivered, and who should change formats and quit pretending they know what a news talk format is?

WSB Radio...hands down has done and is doing the best weather coverage. Just last night, WSB took some of Sean Hannity's and Hermain Cain's air time and had a call-in show where people called in from the area they live in or driving around in to give the latest updates on road conditions. Most of the other stations were "Business-as-Usual".

WSB by forfeit.

I agree... WSB is the only news oriented station with a 24hr signal.
Seemed like Mellish was absent during the first day -- I recall David Chandley handling both radio and TV as all of this unfolded.

WSB is the only news oriented station, period. Network feeds and prerecorded local newscasts don't count in cases like this.

As discussed on another thread, non-class-A-clears can get waivers from the FCC to stay at day power all night for disaster coverage. But you have to be covering the disaster, and neither WGST, WGKA, nor WCFO were doing so during the day, let alone at night. I'm not even sure WGKA or WCFO would have the means to do so even if they really wanted to.

I would think that GST or GKA could have relinquished reporting duties to Accuweather or Weather Channel had they wanted to, but everyone has 750 progammed on their radio for such occasions, so what's the point?

How can the stations you mentioned cover weather or any other local news event when the don't have the bodies to do it? In addition, would 'GST preempt the Braves game (which they are paid handsomely) to cover weather (with no sponsors)?

As usual.....Mellish was on vacation during another emergency weather event!
Don't get me wrong.....Kirk Mellish and Ken Cook are the only two weather weenies worth paying attention to - in no way am I being critical of Kirk. I understand these vacations are planned at the first of the year.....who would've guessed this would come along. It just seems Kirk has connections with the weather gods.....
Vacation for Mellish - weather gets hellish.......the new WSB positioning.

That's what I meant by not having the means to do so. I'm sure that WGST could scrounge up an amateur-hour staff around the BoD if they REALLY wanted to...and thought it to be worthwhile (which it probably wasn't).

Anyway, WGST won't have to worry about preempting the Bravos next year... :)

This is the major leagues. I'd have thought the other stations with all their marketing claims would have been dying for a story like this to show us what they got. This week confirmed it. Other than WSB this town doesn't have much news on AM but a lot of noise. I bet stations are hard a work right now writing colorful promos about their non stop coverage.

Snicker if you want about the Fish, but they're not a news station. Still, they have actual, live people in the studio 24/7 EXACTLY for this reason. If there are weather issues, you'll have someone live talking about it. If you're a Fish listener, that means you don't have to change stations. Seems pretty smart to me. Considering probably 90% of Atlanta stations are running either v/t or satellite every evening and weekend, I'd think that gives the Fish a unique edge, even if it's a small one.

Obviously WSB listeners aren't going to look to the Fish for their news, but if you can get your music AND live weather updates 24/7 from one station, then those who DO choose to listen to the Fish can have their Casting Crowns AND their thunderstorm warnings too.

Oh, and one more thing about the Fish while you're laughing at them.

They immediately set up an on-air help situation for listeners who NEED assistance to call in, and for listeners who WANT to help others to call in (or e-mail, etc.). In other words, they established a listener-to-listener connection to provide help to those who need it. Are any other stations doing that?

Chandley was on the air during Monday morning drive time. Kirk, who was supposed to be on vacation, was on the air beginning Monday afternoon and throughout the remaider of the flood coverage.

Yes I heard Kirk back from vacation 4-7:30 with live shots then I turned off radio with other things to do so don't know how late it went, Arum was doing a special show that started at 7. They said on the radio yesterday, Saturday morning that his vacation was canceled again as he was doing updates all day Saturday, I heard him doing warnings somewhere around 6pm last night I think and heard him earlier in the afternoon doing live shots with Dave Baker and Walter in the morning and Herb in the afternoon plus break-ins. Nice vacation but he probably loves storms. Hope everyone got through ok, not too bad where I live. I like hills!
