Who's flipping to Country?

Big hole here with K92 only true Orlando country. 102 Jamz would do well if CBS could execute the flip flawlessly.

Thoughts?

There is definately room for a second country outlet in Orlando and Central Florida. The question remains which 100kw "stick" is underperforming to the point it justifies "blowing it up" in favor of starting over from scratch with a new country format?

Jamz would be the best candidate to switch. In CC's case, what would you change? I would bet that JRR probably produces the least revenue of their FM stations but I don't see the market with NO rock station, that leaves Magic and they probably figure it isn't broken enough to bother fixing.

Cox actually understood this more than anyone else did, that's why 94.5 was country back before it flipped to Urban AC. They eventually figured out no one was going to come after K92 to they didn't need another country station to protect it.

Who will do it?

No one.

The best and most logical candidate as a country music competitor against WWKA is WPCV. WPCV would need to change nothing programming wise with the exception of tweaking its imaging. And, while its existing signal is one of the best in the state, it can still increase its antenna height by another 500 +/- feet which is enough to improve its Orlando city grade (70dBu) signal to become a real competitor in the market. However, on the other side of the equation, Hall Communications appears to be content with "97 Country" as a Polk County radio station.

Wow, that signal is already a flamethrower. Am curious, how are they allowed to go another 500 feet higher and not interfere with anything on 97.3 (WSKY) and 97.7 (not sure what's there nearby). That would darn near cover the complete I-4 corridor, south to Palm Beach and boom into Gainesville/Ocala.

Reminds me of the old I-100 in Palatka back in the day............ ;D

WPCV is a class C0 operating with 100kw at approximately 1,000 feet. Class C0s are allowed a maximum 1,500 feet (rounded off) and remain at 100kw ERP. If WPCV were to take advantage of upgrading to its maximum authorized technical facilities for its class, that is where the potential additional 500 feet comes from.

With no 97.5 signals in Florida other than WPCV and extra 500 feet would be massive. Imagine hearing 97 Country from Alligator Alley to I-10.

Then there's 97.3 WSKY around Gainesville & Latino 97.7 in the Fort Myers area to deal with.
Didn't 97.5 Country try the Orlando market years ago & not succeed?

I had posted this earlier in the "Shadow Leaving K92" thread.

WPCV actually did, in fact, attempt to target Orlando several years ago when it first began operating from its 1,000 foot Haines City tower. Hall Communications opened an Orlando sales office on John Young Parkway near the WDBO / WWKA / WCFB facilities along with placing countless billboards strategically located throughout the metro Orlando area. There is a reason, which I will not expound upon, WPCV did not perform as well as expected back then against WWKA.

WHOO that's Who...Sorry,couldn't resist problem is COX owns K-92 and WDBO. My Best Guess is also 101.9 (CBS),my second best guess is 100.3 or knowing Clear Channel 101.1 which would open the door for CBS to launch either an Hispanic Station or a Rocker.

If anyone should make a flip to Country IMHO cox should flip WDBO-AM 580 to a Classic Country format considering the news/talk format does not exist on the AM anymore in their eyes. Change the call letters to WWKA and run one of the automated Classic Country formats out there, perhaps do a live morning show with Ron Bison and be on the bird the rest of the time. They could even cross promote WWKA-FM's format on the AM and vice versa on the FM. Also run the AM on one of 92.3's HD sub's. It would be better then just wasting away that frequency and it would give listeners who like the older music a place to listen to it.

The issue that WPCV has is that it doesn't put a reliable signal over the Daytona area. Yes, Volusia County isn't part of the Orlando market. However plenty of people who work in Orlando live in the Daytona area. If driving home on 1-4 from Orlando means a certain radio station will start becoming full of static at any point in the ride people will tend to avoid that station.

Really!? And keep 104.1 on the air? Wow.

Is there enough room for another country station? I know there probably was when WWKA had 11 & 12 shares. Now that it's a 5 share station, would someone want to split that?

National Sales wise yes. Country brings in the money. Have a great sounding station (with a better mix of music), poach the K92FM talent they are tossing to the curb, cater to the soccer mom (25-54) and you have a winner.

The answer is "YES" there is definate room for a second country station on FM. It will need a "big stick" among other things to stand any kind of a chance of winning against WWKA; however, the point is there is room to compete format-to-format directly against K92FM.
