Who's gonna take their place?

I feel like George Jones grieving the loss of all the country music greats and wondering who's gonna take their place.

I see on Jim Rose Remembers Radio that Michael Shiloh is leaving the market to take a job in Florida.

Best of luck Mike and I hope you find some happier trails. It's a damn crime that talented people like you have to leave Houston to find a job.

You're very kind, Filio. Your words of encouragement helped during the disorienting days after I had to move out here.

"Had to," meaning there's so little work in Houston radio that you have to go where the work is. I blame the economy, because there are a lot of us across the U.S. who have had to move thousands of miles away from our families just to be able to keep up those mortgage payments. I talk to people in other depressed industries and it's the same.

I know there are others in Texas who are quite weary of checking with the TAB and other websites and seeing ads for nothing but receptionists (excuse me, Directors of First Impressions) and interns and board ops. The only solution has been to work three part time jobs and hope for the best.

Or go out of town or out of state. Radio is thriving in other cities, with new formats or new twists on older formats, but I don't know what's wrong with Texas radio, which used to be so innovative. You can apply to the few news or personality openings repeatedly and never hear a word. I hear this from others who are looking for work.

"All News Radio" is fascinating and can be great fun, but the hardest part is being so far away from home and family, as you might guess.

And no, Distortion1, Chuck can't take my place. He's now a granddaddy, he's got it made! I've got a little one at home, a pre-recession baby if you will. You do what you have to do!

The folks at TAB will confirm it. The big dogs, who own most of the radio stations in the larger Texas markets, don't want innovative radio. You'll only hear that in the smaller towns now days.
