The Bull had a bad month 3 after a good month 2. Although Kicks got hit, it still far outperformed The Bull. And the Kicks/Eagle combo clobbered The Bull. But all of this means fairly little at this point in my opinion. We'll probably have a better idea after the spring book.

Here's the email Fram sent out (my smart ass additions in bold):

Winter Book Update
Let's take a look at the 18-34 world:

Congratulations to our sister station Q100 - the #1 non-ethnic 18-34 station in the market (way to start your 99X ratings recap)(behind V103, Hot, BZY, & The Beat). (Also known as 5th place)

From Winter 06' to Winter 07' The Project moves from #.# to #.# From Winter 06' to 07' 99X goes #.# to #.# but jumps ranked from 9th to 7th (Project was 6th, X tied with Viva and WSB-AM for 7th)

(#4 non-ethnic)(what's with the non-ethnic spin!?)

Even with the February #.# that Arbitron gave the New Morning X the show scores a #.# 18-34 The Steve Show stays steady with a #.# 18-34 moving up ranks from W06'

Axel is #4 non-ethnic 18-34 going from a #.# to a #.# with another rank jump "Let's hear it for the boy" ( is that a 23 yr. old Denise Williams reference...way to be on the cutting edge) Dekker is #1 non-ethnic with a #.# (18-34)!!!!! (NNX tied with KLS for 5th at night P18-34, so I guess they tied for first non-ethnic since that seems to be Fram's hot button)

99X is the #1 non-ethnic station for Men 18-24 jumping #.# to #.# (W06' to W07') !! (Did X shift it's target to young men!? I'm sure sales people all over the city will be happy to take this news to the buying community)

The New Morning X scored a #.# with 18-24 Men (#2 non-ethnic) Axel is #1 non-ethnic with 18-24 men with a #.#!!

Dekker is #1 with 18-24 Men scoring an #.#! (Yeah, "Can't Touch this! Stop, Hammer Time!")

The 25-34 males landscape was very urban and hispanic with the following station's ahead of us: WBZY, V103, Hot, WALR, The Beat and those pesky white stations like white stations like WKLS, WSB-FM and WZGC leaving NNX 10th M25-54 (I wonder how this effects their 21+ comp?) (99X finishes with a #.# with 25-34 men which is #4 non-ethnic (also known as 10th) The New Morning X has a #.# which is #4 non-ethnic (8th)Axel places #3 non-ethnic (7th) with a #.#

99X increases in 18-34 females from Fall 06's 1.9 to Winter 07's #.#!!!

Midday 18-34 female numbers (shouldn't these be called non-male to compliment the non-ethnic spin) increase from #.# to #.# Axel's 18-34 female numbers jump #.# to #.# Dekker goes #.# to #.# with 18-34 woman

Our TV campaign kicked in at the end of March so we are looking forward to seeing our April/May months and Spring book results! Thanks everyone for making 99X the coolest station on the planet! (And the lowest rated 12+ FM station in Atlanta 3 books running)

Leslie Fram
99X Program Director
Co-Host of The New Morning X

Country? :'( Looks like there's no country station in the top ten of any of those lists above.

Some of these Country station's have got to go, PLEASE enough is enough. ::) ???

Gee, think Susquehanna is happy they sold 99x when the did. I hear the Sunny Valley Retirement Home on Lenox Rd. is looking for a "Program Director" for Friday and Saturday night events. Maybe Leslie Fram can get free rent there by taking the gig?

Look... seriously - no one gives a crap about 12 + that is what Arbitron gives the information away. It's trash.

I agree, the Dickey minions seem to be getting desperate to save their hides...now insted of focusing their creativity on their stations' programming...they've regressed to coming up with wonderful new ways to spin ratings to make it appear like the X isn't an absolute disaster (that we all know it is).

I'm surprised Fram didn't come up with a line "We're #1 among stations with 'X' in their name!"

If you don't think that the buying community notices that 99x hasn't been able to break a 2.0 share for 3 books in a row and that they are the lowest rated FM in Atlanta (ranked 21st 12+). Then you are plain naive (or maybe not in the industry). It is a broad indicator that shows a major collapse of the station over 3 years. Are specific buys places off 12+, no. Do local buyers place money based on gut. Heck yes! Only national agencies place on demo ranks. Three worst in market returns in row make it no longer a fluke and Dave, Project, River, the Zone, The Fan, etc... will be pounding the streets telling the story of 99X's collapse.

BTW, if the Project was 99x's early Christmas present (i think that was your post), I don't ever want you buying me Christmas presents.... :D

That's actually become pretty common phrase in Atlanta, given the ethnic makeup of the market. Depending upon what widget an advertiser is trying to sell, a lot of stations are pretty much irrelevant and re-ranking stations for their "non-ethnic" position isn't all that unusual.

Of course, that doesn't change what a wreck X appears to be in a lot of ways, I'm just saying that this particular spin isn't really unusual anymore nor is it by any means unique to them.

5/5: Ratings results
By Rodney Ho | Friday, May 4, 2007, 06:04 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With all the changes in the market in November and December, we finally get to see the first glimpses of how they’re affecting the rankings in the winter book, covering early January through early April.

I will provide some general observations here and will give you the rankings over the weekend for 25-54 and 18-34, plus morning rankings. (Arbitron does not allow me post the actual ratings numbers for proprietary reasons but I can provide rankings.)

Cox cashes in Cox radio stations dominated four of the top five slots among 25-54 year olds, a key advertiser-friendly demo. Clear Channel’s changes showed a mixed picture while Cox stations B98.5, the River and WSB-AM benefited from the changes, as noted below.

5/6: Ratings rankings 18-34, 25-54

Here are the rankings for key demographics for the winter of 2007 with percentage change from fall of 2006. And for nostalgia’s sake, here’s a Web site that saves the moments when stations change formats. Included are the switchovers of Lite to the Bull and 96rock to Project 9-6-1.

And the 12-plus numbers are here.. Jazz 107.5 had its best 12-plus numbers ever while Viva hit its lowest figures in its brief history.

I find it hilarious that "f10" had a copy of Fram's memo. Obviously an ex employee who still has connections in the building - and someone who has a serious hatred for Fram, and 99X. Not saying this excuses 99X's ratings, but c'mon - why does everyone love to HATE 99x?

Also - the "non-ethnic" phrase gets used by EVERY non-hispanic, or urban station in the market... get a copy of every other PD's memo and you'll see it, and that's a fact.

99X is struggling - no doubt, but so is Dave, Star, and plenty others - f10, where is the hatred for them?

I'm not defending X as a product - they need help, but just pointing out personal issues people have on this board.

I wouldn't assume that F10 is an ex-employee. Could also be a current employee who's rightfully disgruntled that Fram has driven 99X into the ground. I know that if my living depended on 99X's ratings I'd be wanting to know how she manages to keep that gig. F10 could also be a Q100 employee. Keep in mind, Q and X may be sister stations, but they're also 18-34/25-34 competitors.

Even if "non-ethnic" isn't an unusual way to categorize stations, 99Xs ranking is not impressive for three reasons.

1. How many non-ethnic stations target 18-34 in ATL? Just a few, so 99X should always rank somewwhere near the top of that small group of stations.

2. Some stations 99X considers ethnic such as WBTS has a large non-ethnic audience.

3. When 99X was at their peak their ratings were so good that they didn't have to use the non-ethnic crutch. They could give their 18-34 total ranking and be proud of it.

To be fair, one of the reasons 99X has far lower ratings than hey used to have is the fact that Alternative is not nearly as popular as it once was. Not too many ALT stations have huge ratings in 2007.
