Who's got the best syndicated morning show? Tom Joyner? Steve Harvey? Ricky Smiley? Big Boy? Russ Parr?

Around 20 years ago, I can remember getting up at 5 AM when visiting markets such as Chicago and Detroit to catch the opening theme song of the Tom Joyner Morning Show and roll the tape. It seemed special back then. Tom Joyner had been the "fly jock" just a few years prior and the show was fun to listen to. TJMS also wasn't heard in nearly as many markets at that time.
What do I miss today? Local morning and afternoon shows that gave urban radio stations a sense of local distinctiveness! Shows like Carter and Sanborn on WUSL and BJ Berry on WDAS when I moved to Philadelphia in 1992 or Donnie Simpson on WKYS and Robin Breeden on WPGC during the summer I spent in DC in 1991. Even most of the larger city urbans today lack both local morning AND afternoon shows.

Amen to that! I miss live and local urban morning shows in large cities. It seems like the lackluster "Frank & Wanda in the Morning" on V-103 in Atlanta is the last of the kind.

KKDA-FM still has a local morning show. Doesn't KBXX in Houston have a local morning show?

They do, but the overall playlists of both stations turn me off completely. I'm fan of full-service urban stations.

Trust me, if I had to choose between those two, I would pick KKDA-FM. At least they don't play no damn Justin Beiber.
Local AM drives so far came back in Kansas City and Orlando. Steve Harvey failed on KPRS and WJHM and both went back local, except WJHM took on Rickey Smiley shortly before going rhythmic. Same for Hampton Roads - Doug Banks failed on WOWI, and Russ Parr simply went off the air when WWHV was sold. Basically that leaves Memphis as the last urban market in the south supporting TWO hip hop/rnb stations to never utilize AM syndication (not counting Star and Buckwild on the former WAPW).ShawtyBlack_ATL said:Could local Urban morning shows come back? I know CC has local Urban morning shows in NYC, Philly, Augusta, Memphis, San Fran, Detroit and Chicago. Radio One never put Smiley nor Parr on in Houston nor Columbus.
