Who's live on the Holidays?

In defense of those of us who take off during the holidays, we do it for several reasons:

We don't get much time off, so we have to take it when we can.

Since we're all news junkies, we hate to miss talking about any big stories, and the week between Christmas and New Year's Day is traditionally a very slow news week. Even when there is news, most reporters take the time off, so there's little actually being reported.

We apologize to our loyal listeners who tune in and may be unhappy with a "best of" or fill-in person, but it's the best we can do, and sometimes it's a great break for a talented fill-in person.

One year, I actually filled in on mornings AND afternoons for four days straight during the holiday week. I have no idea what I talked about. Wouldn't want to hear the tape, that's for sure...!

Happy New Year! We'll all be back on Jan 3rd.

Free Talk Live was live Thanksgiving, Chrisstmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day, and every day inbetween.

Most listeners don't listen on holidays (and they don't work either). Best-of shows are lame but they are cheap and they are pretty much the only option. It would be nice if the networks or syndication companies came up with turnkey holiday programming that might actually suit the holiday - something like an updated version of NBC Monitor with a holiday them.

Radio personalities have a right to have a day off or a vacation. If it's not profitable to have a subsititute host, then a best of or pre-recorded programing (like Jim Rome's year in review shows).

Perhaps it's best that no new programing because it may pressure some people to get a life.
