Who's looking forward to this Friday (6/1/07)?

That's the day that Arbitron releases the first phase of the spring book - and the first day that we can pass judgment on stations which fare poorly at the worst possible time of the year (the Spring book, which is used to set the Christmas season rates, i.e. new cars and engagement rings). Who among us are gathering their stones to toss? My likely targets are alternative rocker (in name only; what alternative rocker in their right mind plays Led Zep, Hendrix and AC/DC?) 'BCN and classic rocker 93-7 Mike FM (two classic rock stations - 'ZLX and 'ROR - are plenty; 'BCN and Mix seriously need to drop their classic rock segments). I'm sure that there are other targets; assuming that Boston isn't embargoed we'll be all set to start firing around 5 pm this Friday!

Oh yes, I'm definitely looking forward to this Friday! :D

First off... one third of the book not the booketh make! You must look at the entire book, not just phase one, before making any snap judgements.

Secondly... I wouldn't call Mike FM a classic rocker!! Sheesh! Sure, they do play some classic rock, but lots of other stuff too. They are very different than the classic rockers.

Mike-FM is not trash, they play a real lot of what I like, and they rarely play something that makes me want to change the station! Just the other day I heard No Rain and and thought, gee they really missed the boat there! However it wasn't Mike-FM that was playing it but rather WBOS instead.

Waaahhhh. That's right, anything YOU don't like is trash. And you work for which radio station? Thought so. I gotta tell ya, a LOT of people think rap is trash. Rhyming about guns, cognac, and hos over a track "borrowed" from soneone else. Takes real talent.

Rap Music is one of the greatest oxymorons around.

"Mike-FM" and WROR aren't Classic Rock. WROR is Classic Hits, which includes some major soul hits (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Sam & Dave, etc...) and a few mid-70's big disco hits. Classic Rock stations such as WZLX stay with only rock, and don't play any soul, disco, or any black artists in their regular programming except for Jimi Hendrix.

"Mike-FM" is even farther from being a Classic Rock station. It's format is "Adult Hits", which includes some classic rock and a variety of some other types of major popular hits from the past four decades (though heaviest on the 70's and 80's pop). The only station in the area that really follows a Classic Rock format as it's currently defined is WZLX. Others include some Classic Rock songs within other formats.

Actually, I am looking forward to WJDA's latest ratings... ;)

I liked some early rap like Run DMC ("Rock Box"), Sugarhill Gang ("Rapper's Delight"), and
Grandmaster Melle Mel (or was it Grandmaster Flash), "New York New York" and "White Lines".
Think it was G. Melle Mel; Grandmaster Flash did "The Message" (don't push me 'cause I'm close to
the edge. it's like a jungle sometimes," etc.)

I'm sorry, Eli, but every time I hear either Mike or WROR, it's always Led Zep, Floyd, the Who, Aerosmith and/or AC/DC. Great stuff, but, like disco to a lot of people - none which I heard on radio, except for 103's "History Of Rock'N'Roll" (another thread) - a little bit of Floyd and AC/DC go a long way. In short, I've lost my appetite for classic rock as a net result. :(

Mike-FM's playlist is more targeted than that. They play stuff that other stations are not playing as well as stuff that ROR and ZLX would play, etc.

I still think the worthiness of RAP/ALTERNATIVE music comes down to the fact that the majority of it CAN'T BE HUMMED!

Do the dirty lyrics or the phoniness of the vocalist turn me on....NOPE!

Perhaps some people get a serious charge out of the format...but it's basically like being beaten over the head with a club over and over and over again
:D Some listeners enjoy abuse....I prefer news and entertainment.

Ah, c'mon.... rap music does have its positive attributes. It is being quite useful as a USA export to other countries with either intended or unintended results of bringing the rest of the industrialized world down to our level on the culture-meter.
