Who's minding da' store?

Dayton sports talk radio is just hilarious. After hearing WING play a Father's Day sale spot not too long ago (check the calendar guys, it's August!) I heard a Colin Cowherd promo on Saturday that was outdated by at least 9 days! Not to be outdone, early in WONE's Browns game broadcast Saturday evening, they ran a spot promoting G.K., you remember, Geoff Kim...the guy who got fired months ago after being "exposed" on the Perverted Justice website! I guess A.M. radio now stands for "anybody monitoring"?

Oh, that's nothing! I heard WING forget to give a legal ID at the top of the noon hour! It's not like it was 4 in the morning or anything, but Mid day! Somebody had to be in the building... right?

The Legal ID does not HAVE TO run at the top of the hr. You can run it wherever you want.

..provided it is done as close to the top of the hour as posible at a logical break per FCC regs (..coming out of a local spot break per se.)

This is what gets my goat more than anything about corporate clusters..it sounds haphazard and makes the station look bad. My only hope for ESPN 1410 is that the new owners shake things up and clean things up.

As for 980/1340 Bummer the Sports Minimal it was CC who set the example (not the standard)here to do things as cheap and haphazard as possible...all in the name of profits.

Is that still the rule? If so--wouldn't it have to be the last item in the stop set that is closest to the top of the hour? (Or first if the stop comes after the top)

It really doesnt really matter where you run it.

WRONG!!!!!! this is one of those cases, where the rule usually isn't enforced...but it IS still THE rule, and could be enforced, IF you were sited by the FCC, generally in case of extreme abuse. Where a lot of leeway is given, you can still get in trouble for it...

sorta like jaywalking... nobody is going to do much...until..

you do it on the expressway...(normally Darwinism takes care of these people)...., or try jaywalking in for of the Presidential Limousine. In both cases, extreme and extraordinary, but I wouldn't try it.

Let's say, for example, there is a pirate station operating somewhere on your frequency, and the FCC has gotten enough complaints, that they are investigating. and you choose NOT to identify properly. The inspectors are not local, so they don't know you from Adam...

You will get a citation...

Sec. 73.1201 Station identification.

(a) When regularly required. Broadcast station identification announcements
shall be made:

(1) At the beginning and ending of each time of operation, and

(2) Hourly, as close to the hour as feasible, at a natural break in program
offerings. Television and Class A television broadcast stations may make
these announcements visually or aurally.

WOW! That’s one of the best lines I’ve read here, Kirkie! What a humorous twist on the station moniker; and your business summation couldn’t be more concise – and correct! A perfect example of comedy meeting corporate critique... ‘Could the latter really-exist without the former :D

"...thankya...thankayaverymuch."

Only Steve Kirk himself could have "thunk-up" something better than my pun. Judy Tenuta might come close.

.....come to me and seduce me my sweet and kooky judy tenutie love princess you...ha chi chi chi chi chi chi! (lol!)

Kirkie Fan has a good point here.

But, the sad reality here is that, in my humble opinion, the people over at 717 East David don't care a whit about WING. The people in programming there are too busy running Z and Hot on what, based upon recent staff departures, etc...seems to indicate is just a little more than a skeleton staff. I was told (but don't know for certain), that the PD's pay for WING is about what a young starting DJ's salary is in a big station in this type of market, so you know you're not going to get supreme experience, or exceptional dedication with pay that low. (I've been told a figure, but won't mention it here.)

They've got the ESPN radio franchise, which is worth something...and, no doubt, the sales department can get a few buys here and there. But, it would be better to see someone there actually "care" for the station and eliminate some of the small market level mistakes heard on an almost daily basis there. (Examples: outdated commercials, yesterday's traffic reports, a newscast from 3 days earlier...we've heard them all on WING for quite a while.)

Perhaps the new owners will address this. But, we're talking AM radio here. I ain't holding my breath.

Definately. The neglect of WING goes back years and several ownership changes, starting with dropping any pretense of programming the station and going CNN Headline news with fire and brimstone preaching in morning drive (including the extremely irritating Terry McClean). Weren't we talking the early 90s or even before when that happened? I can remember probably 10 years ago hours on end of "CBS Radio Network Channel 06...BEEP". I don't look for anyone to take it to glory.

It must be awfully disappointing for those who kept WING in top form during the 60s and 70s to hear it now. There's simply no excuse for this kind of neglect.

Let's not leave out the terribly neglected WDSJ the jazz station going off a satellite feed partly I think. Can't figure it out but the announcers often get the song wrong not that anybody even notices. Apparently the people there don't hear it because it keeps happening. The only time it's noticable is when it's the familiar pop songs they play (yes they do play pop stuff on there) and announce it wrong. No one knows what the instrumentals are so it doesn't matter there. I'll bet there hasn't been one complaint. The most recurring mistake is the announcer says a certain song is coming up and what comes up is totally different than what they said. Sometimes that song comes up later in the hour but then it is introduced as something else that played earlier in the hour. Somehow the voices are put in the wrong place during some hours. Not every hour that I can tell. it would probably be better to forget mentioning the songs. The announcers are generic most of the time in what they read and the music is just mood music so it doesn't matter what it is. maybe song references should be dropped completely. Some songs are wrong on the list on the website too. You can tell not much care is put into it or maybe it is too much work to do it however they're doing it.

I think I use to work with Geoff Kim at WHIO-AM. What's he suppose to have done?

I can understand CC taking WDSJ to the bird in a way. In fact the previous mom and pop owners played SJ off the bird. Still, there's a lot of potential for that station as a northern Miami Valley station.
