Who's minding the store?

You are so right about the General Manager and unless the station is doing well the General Manager in any Samall Market should be a selling mnager. I think the Gm of any size should still sell some just to be connected with the market and with Account Reps. I don't know what the number of employees were at WULM before but i can't imagine it was a bunch. WULM needs a GM who sells and can also be on the air. I know it it a few hats to wear but I have worked at stations that had GM just like that. WULM could do a turn around if they could find that multi-talent person. Format change and continue the reinforcement of being the community station. I love Oldie & would like to see a good oldies staion that understands the musix rotation but the bottom dollar of being in sells the support is just not there. Most stations who go Oldies don not know how or who to go to sell it. I hope all turns out ok, I have heard some rumors about buyers and that there is a chance but you wonder what they would do with it. WMVR i in Sidney has had it's run of problems also, when Mark Earhart was the GM that was the glory days "What A Promotion Machine" he was everywhere I remember going to the theatre at the Piqua Mall and Hits being there promotoing movies. WMVR ia a good example of a come back , becaue of a staff how sacraficed for the love of radio and they had heart. The station owner there has never put money into the station , computers were brought in by former PD, there was never any money there either and ther were times the phone was shut off for a day or so. The employees banded together for the station. The owner decided to change management from Mark (who had the revenue to almost 1 million) and changed it within one year the revenue had reduced by 1/2. when I left therer 3 years ago they were billing about $350.000. The agency were not calling because they were not showing up in the book. We started calling some of the advertiser direct and telling them our rates, and it would work every one in a while. Trust me WULM is not alone in it's situation and I have seen worse and owners pull it out. I think if a plan was put together and the powers to be talk to some more time could be given.

Another format if the staff can be found is to be the first hispanic station. The poulation numbers would support. WEEC is doing some hispanic chritian on a sub frequency but it is not on fulltime

I wasn't aware that WMVR was in the shape it's in. Did this all happen after Dean Miller passed away? I take it that his family members own it now, not sue how much involvement they have. There's really no excuse for WMVR to fail; it's largely has the market to itself and even though big signals get there, no one is selling against them.

Whoever might buy WULM will have to sink a boatload of cash into it for personnel, marketing, promotions and equipment. Security national is not willing to put any more money into it; they just want out (and their money).

Dean Miller Jr is now running but alot of unexperienecd people on the air. Great sports program. Ohio Stae local. Past amamgement was awful , after Mark Earhart left the renew dropped like a rock. You are right no excuse. The biggest problem was they were trying to be more than what they are, big problem in alot of local stations. They just did not do the promotions in other counties (especially Miami) to get people from that are to listen. Sales manager had worked as a waitress assitant manager before getting the job. Let me tell you WULM is not alone in the troubles of small market radio. I can remember phones being cut off, pay being delayed. When I was they I was on the Air, Sold , did promotions and a speciality 50's and 60's show on the weekend. I will tell you that show did do great, it ws sold out. Approached right advertisers. Alot of people still think oldies is dead. the main reason is because of ageny buys. Forget the agencies, if yu are local it can be done. Anyway thats an old horse that has been beaten too many times.

Normally I ignore this kinda thing because it's a minor quibble. This is an internet message board, not English Lit. I also don't want to sound like a jerk, at least not most of the time.

However....

Northernlights, damn brotha. I have NO idea what you're saying most of the time. Please try a spellcheck program, just as a start. You may be making valid sensical points but damned if I can figure out what they are.

gr8oldies: you killed what was left of WULM. Nobody want music. Give me a break. I listened to your crappy "Bubba and Buddy" show 1 time long enough to hear "We'll have the Troy/Shawnee" game on when it was SOUTH NOT SHAWNEE. That let me know you didn't know what you were talking about. I also emailed you asking when you'd put up the high school schedule:

Doc,

Thanks for writing. We'll post our schedule on the site. The stream is temporarily down but will be returning soon.

Hello. I am a listener of 1600 WULM. I am glad to know that WULM is having a sprots show on saturday mornings again. Back when it was WBLY you guys had one and I enjoyed listening to it and I will listen to your new one. I just talked to Dave Williams at the Champaign County fair and he said he was going to be the host. He is a great guy and I am glad you've kept him around. Anyway, I am writing this email to ask if you have a schedule of the games you are going to do this year. I also have been trying to listen to your station on the internet and you audio stream doesn't work. I hope you can get it fixed. Thank you for staying in Springfield. It is nice to have a local station that contributes to Springfield. I'll be sure to keep listen to "Spingfield's Sunshine Station".

Thanks for putting it up HA!! And fixing the stream so quickly....
