WHO'S NEXT AT KILT-FM

OK, its' gettin way to boring on Radio-Info lately and I need something to talk about. With all the layoffs at KILT-FM lately, who's next? Laura Morris,R B McEntire, TJ Callahan, Tom Fontaine, their all gone, who's next? Ot maybe I should ask who SHOULD be next? Lets' get to talking.

I worked at CBS Houston a couple of times and Tom was my closest friend. This is why I'm going to stand up for him. First of all, why didn't all his "friends" stick together and go to Jeff and say,"if he goes, we go" or, "cut my salary in half and keep Tom". A long time ago I worked with a guy and he did not like the way I was being treated, so he went and expressed what he thought to the GM. Of course, he got fired!! Even though we were not close he had the courage to do that and I will never forget him. I walked out after him. Sometimes you just have to do whatever is right, no matter the cost. I love it when certain people accuse others of "only caring about themselves", but yet don't have the guts to stand up for others, especially someone as wonderful as Tom.

In my opinion, Tom was the best one they had. He was a hard-worker and had so much respect for the people that called the request line. That's why he had the best phones up there. The listeners were treated as his equals, which is the way it should be. Radio is a business where good people are not respected and valued and are seen as weak. If I ever own a business, I hope everyone of my employees is like Tom!!!

Nicole, it is unrealistic to do that; it just does not work that way. You've given a perfect example of personal experience that it does not work. In fact, Tom would tell you the same. I know that because, I'm the guy who trained Tom and made sure he got on the air as a DJ. He and I remain good friends today.

Sometimes one can't walk off because the COST is too high. For one thing, one needs the check to pay the bills. More importantly, no matter how much one dislikes someone or the situation one is in, one should never burn their bridges. That's an even bigger cost to your character and reputation. I've done it before and although it was years ago, it didn't help me get the next gig that's for sure.

Let's hope no one is next (I realize that may be overly optimistic, but I just hate to see good folks lose their livelihood).

Tom Fontaine is one of my closest friends personally, and professionaly. He's a great, and talented guy and I have the utmost respect for him. He trained me here at KILT back in '04, and since then we've had some great times together. Tom understood, just like the rest of us in this business,,,,that we can be replaced at any time. Tom has many great opportunities ahead of him and will definately land on his feet. I have absolutely no doubt about that. Of course it doesn't change the fact that we all miss him, RB, TJ, Jim Carolla, and Pat Hernandez a whole bunch. On another subject...burning bridges doesn't help anyone. Tom knew that as well. He still has a lot of friends here in this building,,,including the management. Never know when you might need someone down there.

You guys are all right - Tom is a great guy and taught me a lot, too.

I got fired from CC Austin back in 2001 and thought that my world crumbled. Looking back, it was the best thing that ever happened. Tom, and all of us, will look back in (hopefully) a couple of months and think that "exiting" KILT was the best thing for Tom.

Chin up, Tom! The future holds great opportunities for guys like you!

.....AND to comment on the question "WHO'S NEXT AT KILT-FM"....what kind of f**ked up Q is that?? Why would you want to put good people in the cross-hairs?? ???

Steve,

I will give you props!! At least you had the balls to come on here and say a little something about Tom. How many of you have worked jobs outside of radio? I have worked a lot of them. Maybe that is why I see things differently. I will be the first one to admit I am very idealistic and my mother always says to me, "Nikki, you need to stop expecting people to do the right thing . Most people aren't like you." I think a lot of you can't imagine not being on the air. It's like your whole identity is tied to being in radio. I don't understand that. I loved being on the air. I loved and miss doing phones, but I know that there are other fun, exciting, rewarding jobs out there. Maybe you guys should do a promotion/contest to trade jobs with someone for a couple of days to see that. I will also be the first one to admit that I have burned a lot of bridges, but how many of these bridges involved people/bosses that have not done anything great for the world, or are great men? How many of them had integrity? How many of then lied to save their own ass? I think a lot of you have very screwed up morals and values. I remember a few months back when a certain dj in Houston got fired. All of you were talking about how great he was and it made me sick. This guy, when I worked with him, came up behind me, when I was on the air and stuck his hand up the crack of my ass!! He never apologized and the station just swept it under the carpet. I don't understand why walking out of a job because you are being lied to or used or treated like you are below everyone else, is worse than someone doing the above, or doing drugs, or cheating on their wives. My God!!! I had a GM once that went to jail for being with an underage girl..he was like 50 at the time!!! Guess what? He got another job in a bigger market when he got out!!! I need you guys to expain to me what you think makes a great man...PLEASE!!!!

slickchick - you strike me as one who REALLY enjoys Lifetime.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Thats Nicole... always one to be the bitter one on this board that always boasts about how great it is to NOT be with the "scum" of us radio folk in this market... yet finds herself STILL coming back here to bicker and to be so self centered. "ME, ME, ME... I WAS TREATED BAD, I HAD A DUDE'S FINGER IN MY CRACK..." Move on, this career and mindset is obviously not for your type of personality.

Nicole, we are not here to discuss "what you think makes a great man". Leave that discussion on the eHarmony forums you lurk.

Nicole is BITTER and nothing she can say, can sway that cloud above her head.

Tom? I've had the chance of talking with him a couple of times through the years...and man, whatan awesome and positive attitude that man always had. I wish nothing but the best for him and his family!

Hey Slickchick,

I give you props for being who you are and not taking anyone's BS on this board. These boards allow you to vent and make credible observations and opine on them. You called a spade a spade. I've seen GM's glorified in this market who deserve jail time for the way they treated their employees. I've worked with sales managers that were bad alchoholics and brought that disease into every sales call. And it's not just men. We're talking women too. There are women in this market that have been villified beyond justification on these boards and in public. There are female managers in this market who came directly into major positions from their previous jobs at The Men's Club and other such establishments. Face it, this business is filled with good people scattered with some real riff-raff. Bottom-line, this is a BUSINESS. When the bean counters come in they don't care about who was good, bad or a virtual criminal. It comes down to a particular position delivering a monetized attribute. If it does deliver, that position stays. If not, it gets eliminated. If the person occupying that position is a great guy or gal then that's the way it is. It's sad, but true. They (corp suits) don't give a rats ars who you are, how great you are or how long you've been servicing the company. Instead of villifying these bosses and fighting with your peers, everyone should take stock in their position and work to maintain generating revenue to the bean counters. If you don't like that outlook, get another career. If you're good, you'll adapt to anything.

This business used to be fun and financially rewarding. I voluntarily left it when the fun went away and the rewards began to diminish. I fortunately found a more rewarding career, but I miss the fun. I hope the electronic media business makes a comeback someday. Perhaps after the recession and shake down it's going through now, the best and brightest will emerge to re-energize it in some form and fashion. Unfortunately that is probably a pipe dream, but one can still hope.
