Who's the best/worst jocks in Portland?

Okay kids. Let's not pull any punches--and let's not let those Vermont losers keep dominating this board. Who's the best full-time jock in Portland? Somebody who should be major market, but isn't? And who should never be on the air again--never mind in a radio station building? Let's dish!

I think Jeff, Lori and Meredith are perhaps the best, and IMO the most underated morning show in the market. I also think, at this stage in their careers (as a show) they should be on a Hot AC and not a Top 40 station. Conversely, I think Tim and Eva should be on a AC and not a Hot AC. I think both shows would be far more successful, ratings wise, if matched with what I feel is better current audience demographic for them.

Bottom line, Jeff, Lori and Meredith could be doing mornings on a top 50 market Hot AC today - Hartford or Providence as an example.

I think Cliff Pulaski is pretty good. Polka Saturday is one of the best shows........oh, PORTLAND.

I thought the title said POLAND.

Nevermind.

Best: Tommy C. at BLM. Last of a dying breed. True definition of "personality" as opposed to "jock".

Worst: Had to think about this for a while, MUCH mediocrity over in the Time and Temp- but i'm settling on the "professor" at Frank... or "maximum noise" or whatever he's calling himself on the boards these days. I bet Tommy C's forgot more than Leafy E will ever know about rock and roll.

Here's to 20 more years, Tommy C!

Disagree. Tommy C is to be respected for his longevity, but if he's the last of a dying breed, that must be saying something about the species! He's a trooper, a professional, an ol' reliable, nothing more!

As for the Professor, have you ever listened to his show!? It's not as bad as you make it out to be! Not the greatest I've heard but he knows his stuff... for a young'un he seems to "understand" the music pretty well. And it's not like he hits you with factoids his entire shift...

As for my votes:

Best: Dave and Michelle, the Wolf! They're natural, nothing's forced, great interaction with callers!

Worst: Tie: Ethan Minton, WMGX. Actually pretty useful if you're trying to catch a power nap! and Dominic at WBLM.. is this his first radio job? If so it shows.

Disclaimer: all radio listening and subsequent opinions attained under the influence of a "can of dinner" or 8!

"Let's not pull any punches--and let's not let those Vermont losers keep dominating this board".. Wow..Vermont losers huh ?? We Vermontsters know our stuff, certainly Vermont radio has a lot more depth than the cookie cutter ,mostly generic, positioner filled, research driven, song has to be super tested and proven, vanilla flavored stuff you have over there..

ThreeFer, here you go again.ThreeFer has an obsession with 'BLM, and if he hates Frank and the professor so much how does he know so much about them?ThreeFer almost time for the Spring book and your Frank and Professor bashing. Why don't you just cut and paste from some of your other post? They're all pretty much the same.

See what I mean?

Just kidding about the remarks on your radio stations in Maine. Though, we Vermontsters are quite a passionate and feisty bunch when we get engaged discussing our state of radio.

;D WOW!!!
Where do I begin?!?!?!?!?
Okay, I guess it would only be fair to begin with my selections.
Best On Air: A tie...
Shelly Kincaid/Miranda (WPOR/WMGX)
Brian James (IF HE WERE STILL DOING NIGHTS. Brian was an incredible night rock jock but this cartoon called the Goo he has become is embarrassing)
Worse On Air: Annie (WPOR), Mike Violette (WGAN, still as big a sissy as he was in Augusta/Waterville), WBLM morning show (hasn't been the same since they canned Persky, their interaction sounds as grating as O'Donnell and Hasselbeck on The View with less testosterone)
Underminer...what will we do with you? You create an awesome topic for discussion, then you not only fail to give us your selections but you slam our neighbors to the west...sorry Vermont. Please tell us your selections.
Threefer...there just isn't enough time in the day...thread after thread after thread you continue to not only fail to make a point but all you can do is toss missguided insults and criticism at Nassau Broadcasting. It's okay, we can all read the pain you experienced by either being fired by them or even worse not even considered for a position in the first place...but take a deep breath and let it go...you'll feel better. If this doesn't work for you...by all means continue the helmeted death grip you have with blm and their substandard staff. I also have to correct you on one other point...your assumption that "I" am the professor...thank you, I am truly humbled by the thought you could mistake me for WFNK's resident music expert but alas I am not him. I shy away from the big city lights in favor of the quiet of the distant country side...which is where my front porch thermometer is the only time and temp source I look to.

Funniest Line From the Current Thread: Tommy C. at BLM. Last of a dying breed...well that explains the smell coming from One City Center...

Alright, I'll go....

Best in Portland (mornings) tie between Coast/JBQ/POR Mornings

Best in Portland (non-mornings) Shelley/Miranda, Rob Steele.

Worst in Portland (mornings) Robin's Zzzzzzing Zone. Ugh. Could there be anyone who talks about themselves so incessantly? Oh wait, there's.....

Worst in Portland (non-mornings) "My name is Tad." Double ugh. You know what, dude? WE CAN READ LINER NOTES, TOO! THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE RELATING ANYTHING ABOUT THE MUSIC. STFU AND PLAY A DAMN SONG IN 3 MINUTES OR LESS!!!

That's our opinion. We welcome yours.

Here's my pick all the way from the Green Mountain state.. Chick Igo, Randy K, the Viking, Amy Ryan, and the legendary Harry Nelson.. Got to keep that Green Mountain input coming..

You Know THERE was a TIME in PORTLAND MAINE
When the JOCKS

WALLY BRINE.....MORNINGS
Now and for OVER 25 YEARS
LOREN AND WALLY WROR BOSTON
JOE MC MILLAN Mid-Days 1975-1977
And 2 other Stops at WJBQ
in between....WHDH/OLDIES103/WVBF/WROR/BOSTON KABL SAN FRANCISCO
JEFF RYDER..(MARK OSBOURNE) AFTERNOONS at WJBQ in the 70's
Now Owner of the NUMBER ONE radio station

And the BEST place I ever Worked!
JM

Grover750, you bring back some memories from my teenage years. WJBQ was THE station at Deering High School, and probably everyplace else. I was a radio junkie even back then, and I'd listen to the Boston stations and think that they were only a little bit better than what we had here at home. You're right, the jocks you named made quite a lineup.

Who was large and in charge at WJBQ back then? (By that I mean PD or GM?)

Ray
In the Middle 70s (1975-
When WJBQ was on 106.9
Rick Snyder was the GM
Jeff Ryder(Mark Osbourne) the PD
John Bride (JB of WJBQ) The Owner
Doug Fink..Sales Manager
It was a REALLY FUN pace to do radio
I came back in 1980 and Did Mid-days Again
and Took Over Mornings when WALLY
left for WVBF...I was in the Studio When he
got the call from WVBF BOSTON PD REG JOHNS
I left for WVBF Boston in 1982...After 2 years..in 1984
went to WGAN Afternoon drive THEN
RETURNED to WJBQ Again
JUST before...TURNER PORTER bought it
he Turned it into WGT The GREAT 98..I did Mornings for TURNER
It FLOPPED and he FIRED EVERYONE!! HE only gave it ONE BOOK!..ONE BOOK!!!!!!
EVEN though I told him I was GREAT at TOP 40..(Which it became)
and OWNED a House in WINDHAM and had 2 daughters.. he Did NOT CARE!
Turner was Paying me 20K
So I went back to the BOSTON area
For the Past Year and a Half I've been Working
for MARK OSBORNE and NAT at WNSX/Ellsworth/Bangor
Doing Mornings...Its a GREAT PLACE....
I even Bought a House
Joe Mc Millan

Your Right it WAS 106.3 WJBQ
I must be having a Senior moment
BUT it was a GREAT 3000 Thousand watts
JM

Maximum Noise,

Mike Violette a sissy? Dude, I'd kill for those pipes. Also, I would not want to be in a fight with the guy. He's a tank, Subway diet or no.

Still hoping to make someone's unskilled air talent list,

rt!
