Who's The Tabloid station in Your town?

Every City seems to have a Tabloid news station. Lots of hype and flash to grab the viewers attention. Often times these same stations are guilty of having little substance. Who is the tabloid News station in your town? Which station would probably fall on their "Big Behind" if they had to solely rely on the quality of their reporting instead of looking like a Disco.

In Hartford, it might be WFSB, but it's very tame compared to some other markets. WNYW in New York, for example, is unwatchable, in my opinion, particularly their 10pm newscast.

Hartford it's clearly WTIC Fox 61. However they are the "flashiest" with the graphics and promos.
The other three aren't flashy but this market leans towards quality over flashy anyways.

Why do you call a station with the amount of fluff and flash 'tabloid'?
The term tabloid means to sensationalize stories. I don't think that flashy graphics, music, and promos are really sensationlizing stories. That has more to do with pace and the style of news over sensationalisim. Maybe I am wrong but then this is just how I read into it...

Well, I thought tabloid simply meant a newspaper that's in the shape of the New York Post. However, that form of newsprint had become renowned for having sensationalism.

I don't know whether the original poster meant news having fluff stories and fancy graphics, or celebrity journalism and headlines created out of rumors with little fact checking.

Well this can go both ways. I guess it's best summed up by what you perceive tabloid TV to be. Is it the flashy graphics, is it sensationalizing news stories, or is it a combination of both? I'm going the combo route myself. I don't necessarily think Tabloid TV is bad. As a matter of fact many viewers label WHDH as the City's tabloid station. I happen to think they are the best Newscast in town. In Providence I would say that the combo of CBS12/Fox64 are definitely the tabloid Newscasts in that city.

Yes, I know that they are really flashy - but they can be pretty thorough too. Maybe not as "respectable" as WCVB, yet they seem to do as comprehensive a job as WBZ. Not sure that I'd refer to 7-News as a "tabloid" newscast. Everyone likes to knock them because of their obnoxious promos and hard-hitting graphics, but there's some solid journalism behind it.

The station that probably better deserves that title in Boston is Fox 25. Their style is more hit and run, which I would characterize as the TV equivalent of a "tabloid." They are much more likely to headline a reality show as if it were real 'news' than WHDH.

I couldn't agree with you more. Channel 7 is very flashy and they can be a little obnoxious with their promos and whatnot, but the journalism is pretty solid. Randy and Caterina do a good job and I prefer watching them over anyone else.

Fox 25 on the other hand is not only flashy and obnoxious with the promos and whatnot, but the quality is just horrible. It's very sensational and they dedicate way too much time to crap that isn't even really news. And don't get me started on the grammatical mistakes.

On the other hand, WB 56 has tons of fluff but I don't think they're terribly flashy nor sensational. They tend to go with a little bit of a slower pace as well. And Karen Marinella is hard not to like.

If I don't catch 7 News earlier in the evening, I'll check out the Ten O'Clock News on 56. If I'm subjected to more than five minutes of Fox, I feel like I'm going to lose my dinner all over the place.

I agree, it's either WTIC/61 or WFSB/3. Speaking of channel 3, I never thought I'd live to see the day when Denise D'Ascenzo read a piece out of the midwest where a robber was caught with his pants down. Of course, D'Ascenzo is one of the classiest professionals out there, and she presented it in a very non-offensive manner, but it was still surprising to see her read it, I think she started to blush as well.

One thing that I think is particularly flashy and unnecessary is something WVIT/30 does. Usually they have the "click of the day" or the "hottest website of the week" or the "wildest video of the day." But I'd rather them fill the spot with more local news. Otherwise, I could watch Comedy Central or MTV to see something funny or scandalous.

I personally don't agree with media organizations or news journalists that cross the line into becoming the entertainment, or begin threatening or debating themselves, like you see with MSNBC and CNN and FOX News.

Someone mentioned WNYW, and over the last five years, FOX5 News has gotten even worse! I like Rosanna Scotto and I liked Ernie Anastos when he was on CBS2, but the format of the 10 o'clock news is just too much. I think once John Roland and Jim Ryan left the station, the old standards of professionalism went with them.
