WHP 580 Nighttime Signal

Has anyone in the north of Harrisburg noticed that the nighttime signal of WHP 580 is much clearer? I believe the nighttime signal had been directed south and east of the city toward Lancaster County. I live 20 miles north of Harrisburg and I have always received a weak sometimes unlistenable signal after dark but I just noticed around Oct 1 that we now receive a strong clear signal at night almost as good as the daytime signal. Is this temporary or has something changed?

Nothing should have changed unless they have a problem with the night pattern or their system is not switching to the night pattern at the correct time. Maybe it is still using the September times or the switching is not happening at all? Their night pattern throws the most signal southeast as required by their license.

The day/night pattern switching time changes the first of each month. They had an STA in 2008 for a problem with the night pattern but that is long expired. If there is a night pattern problem, there should be an STA or at least an application for one on file.

I'm near the MD/PA line south of York and the WHP night signal is audible but not great and can easily be nulled and hear Worcester, MA. The day signal is better but still not great. They do seem weaker here then they were a few months back. Someone needs to read "The Care & Feeding Of Directional Antenna Systems".

I know they are not using the September times because I listen to them from 6:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on the way to work and you can hear at 7:15 a.m. when they switch to daytime.

This thread will be irrelevant once CC gets an FM translator for WHP. ;D

For them to get an FM translator, the 60dbu contour must fit within their 2 mv/m AM contour and it must have been licensed or have had its CP issued prior to May, 2009. No one can use any FM translator channels approved after that date including any approved in the future, under the current rules. Good luck finding one.

Eventually WHP's FM problem will be solved the same way as many of the other AM News/Talk stations. So, which FM will CC either sacrifice, or buy, to become WHP-FM?

The next time you are receiving a better night signal from WHP, check 1230, 1400, and 1460. Chances are the skywave hasn't kicked in. I live outside the night pattern of WHP, but can receive a decent signal if there is no interference. If the skywave activity is heavy, it's hard to even pull in some of the locals at night.
