WHTG Tech Question

Can anyone tell me if WHTG-FM is still transmitting from the AM tower. I know that was the practice for many years. Is the Wilkinson FM transmitter still on site? One HTG jock from long ago told me that the Wilkinson was know to catch fire from time to timeand they had to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Thos goes back to the "beautiful music" days when Faye Gade owned the station.

Well, certainly it's a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher around electrical equipment, but I think that story's really just a bit of hyperbole.

(It sure did keep you warm on a cold overnight, though. On warm overnights, too...)

The taller stick by the UPS building near Rt 18 and the GSP is where WHTG has been tx'ing from lately. Still a backup FM antenna at the AM site, but no signs of any Wilkinson tx anywhere for the last few years. The Gades built and lease that new tower.

Thanks for the replies. I figured the Wilkinson would be gone by now, but you never know. It's been many years since I've set foot in there. I remember that the AM had an RCA BTA-1 transmitter and the back up was an old Raytheon. As I recall, the Wilkinson was in a little alcove in the back and there was no fm back up. It was a cool little station back in the Gade days, if not a bit unusual. "WHTG am and fm, centrally located in Eatontown to serve you throughout the North Jersey Shore."
