WHTS/Quad Cities flipping to EMF/K-Love on Friday?

A few of the posts at http://www.myspace.com/ALLHIT989 seem to indicate that the station is changing format sometime on Friday, as a result of the sale to EMF that was announced in December.

Can anyone confirm Friday as the flip date? Has it been mentioned on the air? I'm going to be out that way on Friday for other reasons and intend to roll tape if I can confirm this.

Today on the morning show, they said tomorrow would be the last day and the new ownership was taking over during the weekend.

Any idea what time? I'll roll tape all day if I have to. :)

That's the plan. I expect to be recording most of the day tomorrow.

I heard this production piece once tonight, and I gather it's been running often lately: http://redhotbrianscott.homestead.com/GOODBYESONG2.mp3

This makes me sad. We sent our final RADIOMIXES MAINSTREAM show to them over a week ago. Great affiliate, great station, great people. I wish them all the best.

Most likely, unless EMF purchased a few additional hours of programming or entered into a leased management agreement (like what happened to Energy 92.7/5 Chicago when it turned over to an LMA by SBS prior to the official handover), the switch would happen at exactly midnight when ownership legally switches hands.

It's eerie, because this totally reminds of the end of Energy. I'm sure the entire airstaff and alumni will be crowding into the studio for the last few hours of WHTS. Then at midnight, it would be silence as they flip a switch on the board to transition over to EMF's "K-Love" satellite format.

I've been listening off and on. They say they're signing off at 11:59. I can assume there'll be literally a moment of silence while the transition is made and "K-Love" will come alive precisely at midnight.

Edited to say the last song they played was Don McLean's American Pie. It was 47 years ago tonight the event that inspired that song (the plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & the Big Bopper in Clear Lake, Iowa), occurred.

All-Hit 98.9 has left the building.

Close, but not quite...

11:48 - Don McLean's "American Pie" as the final song. Today happens to be the anniversary of "the day the music died," the same day "the music dies" in the Quad Cities.

11:56 - Dry legal ID, followed by the two-minute production piece I linked to earlier.

11:58 - Brief final goodbyes from the airstaff remaining in the studio.

11:59 - Dead air. I'm still listening to the carrier as I write this. No K-Love yet.

98.9's transmitter was off for a couple of hours in the middle of the night last night, and I assumed that's when the new engineers were doing any technical work necessary to make K-Love happen right at midnight tonight. Perhaps not.

> Tim....are you gonna have any audio?

Yes. Last night, the only tape deck that I currently have was still being used to record dead air on WHTS in the event K-Love came on, which it has not. I will be spending part of today copying audio from cassette to my laptop, and I intend to have a scoped copy of the last 1-2 hours posted today. In the meantime, Chris Cervantez has posted the last 16 minutes in another thread.

Hi all!

Must admit, as a former jock for the mighty "Power", this info is a bit sad to read...Many solid personalities went through the doors there and I have fond memories of running the night show there from 90-92...although I had experience in Madison and Milwaukee before my stint, Power was was my first true 'start' into the full time radio...I see there was a listener party...would have loved to see Dan Kennedy and BoJ again...I see 'Dave' all to often as he currently owns Chicago radio doing Mornings for the MIX....

Thanks for the memories!!!!

Best,
