WHTT Drifts Away

I heard U2 and stunned, looked at the tuner to see if it had drifted to CHUM-FM. Granted, it was St. Patrick's Day and the jock said something about U2 being an Irish group, so it may have been a one-time event. But over the last two weeks, I've heard Tom Petty, Marc Cohn, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Bob Seger, the Steve Miller Band and John Mellencamp interspersed with the Beatles, Eagles, Four Tops and Beach Boys. Is it possible they're overdoing this expanded playlist thing? It sure ain't Oldies 104 anymore.

Playin' the Hits

> It sure ain't Oldies 104 anymore.

I agree that it sure ain't Oldies 104 anymore, but I have to say that I'm diggin' the sound. They're playing everything from the Animals to Katrina and the Waves, but songs rarely sound out of place. It's not like the train wreck known as Jack, or the annoying onslaught of obscurity (both music and jock bits) that washes forth from The Lake.

As Young Frankenstein might say, "Fire BAD. Variety GOOD." That doesn't mean they shouldn't resist the urge to play Taco's version of "Puttin' On the Ritz".

Well by definition (a)
Music in 1990 played on whtt/104.1
would be defined as songs from 25 years or so ago.

1990-25 = 1965, and they did play alot from the 60s.
(So, it was a station playing music from 25-35 years ago)

Well, 2006/2007 - 25 years ago: brings to the year: 1982/early 80s.

So, "techincally" they are just following the formula.

definition (b)
Regardless of time/year and age, whtt was defined as your
do-wop..50s and 60s fave's..a true "oldies" station..but
i agree, i enjoy the "new" sound of the "oldies" on 104.1

Heck, it doesnt hurt:
Still do motown weekends, "oldies but goodies" and in august an
Elvis Tribute weekend..etc,etc and then when the listeners call in, let them
say/slip "oldies 104" to the talent and/or on the aire now and again...since every one still thinks of them, as "oldies" / Unlike, CBS radio, who
can no longer, *Legally* bring "Joy" to the airwaves on 96.1

It seems more acceptable to say "oldies 104" in passing than..Joy96.
"THE SUITS" will slaughter you if you refer to wjye as Joy-96....u have a better chance of survival, of slippin up and saying, "q102." or,
103.3-wphd, or even 103.3 the fox than joy 96..

..but "America's Music.." and/or the "Oldies on shuffle"
-Either one..i believe both can work and co-exist..if managed well..

Note to CBS RADIO: If managed well, meaning dont try this at home.
Leave it to Citadel....hehee.

Re: Playin' the Hits

WHTT is moving in a direction that KFRC in SF has done where they tossed out most of the 60's library and play 70's and 80's music....also reminds me of Rock 102 during the 80's.

Guilty as charged. I was "the jock" who mentioned U2, Ireland and St. Pastrick's, er, St. Patrick's Day. Thanks for listening, 9. We also played Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen" on the Shuffle Lunch Hour that day.

It's an evolution and a fitting one at that. We're playin' the hits, as noted by S-R. Also as noted, a song that was a hit in 1980 is 26 years old. Man, where did the time go?! As you noted, WHTT continues to play the Supremes, 'Tops, 'Stones and Beatles.

Again, thanks for listening.

WSEN in Syracuse is doing the same thing. Nothing before '64 except in special shows, and playing music well into the 80's. It sounds great and the ratings are climbing. The only problem is.... the Instant Request Weekends - most of the requests are for songs not on the playlist and no longer in the library. The calls are down and most of the callers are useless - you can't put them on the air.

WHTT has never sounded better. A great mix of music and solid on-air personalities. It's a fun station to listen too.

"Bad" requests are as useful as "bad" songs: Best left off the air. That old Top 40 adage, "you don't get hurt by what you don't play" applies just as well to requests. If the station is moving away from the "oldies" image, putting a 67 year old tobacco-besotted-voiced grandma on the air croaking her request for "Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows does nothing for a station that hopes to shore up its 35-44 women. Younger listeners hear that kind of request and it makes them hit the scan button even before the song is played.

More Pet Shop Boys, Go-Gos and Scritti Politti! (heh, heh...)

PS, nothing against 67 year olds, Denise, grandparents or smokers.

So now should I call WHTT the station that plays "The Greatest Hits You Heard On Rock 102...and a few from CFNY?"

Now...will it be "Wood Beez" or "Perfect Way"?
